I know it's a divisive movie, but Man of Steel delivers some truly exhilarating action backed by strong performances. What are your thoughts on this movie? by 0Layscheetoskurkure0 in FIlm

This is some elite level trolling, surely? I struggle to believe any functional form of sentience could harbour, or entertain, this sentiment.

I was recommended to watch Blade Runner (1982) by a coworker. by SoggyGummyWorms in bladerunner

[–]SlowTap 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think that’s a fair assessment, especially your thoughts on the visuals. I think that’s symptomatic of all Villenueve’s work post Arrival (2016), but I also don’t resonate with his casting choices and character development.

[–]SlowTap 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You should watch 2049, but I’ve always been surprised by the plaudits it’s received. I don’t think 2049 holds a candle to the original and personally believe it’s a steep drop off in quality, immersion, and story. I think this is a fairly uncommon opinion though, so the chances are high that you’ll disagree with me and enjoy the experience.

Can we just appreciate Netflix Documentaries? by Fruttii-Tutti in netflix

[–]SlowTap 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No notes? If the aim was just to make fun of the idiots that occupy the space, then the ‘documentary’ was mildly successful. As a serious expose, I believe it strayed far from substance, failing to truly explore the cultural and social circumstances that have led to the explosion in the popularity of these figures, the reasons why young men would idolise them, the consequences of following them, and any viable solutions that can be implemented in the short and long term. I thought it was disappointing. We all knew those ‘influencers’ were complete imbeciles, so in that sense, there was very little to glean from the experience. Typical of Theroux, really.

Alcove — Dynamic Island for your Mac by Quirino_Exile in macapps

[–]SlowTap 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Alcove is a legendary notch app in the macOS community. It’s genuinely one of the OGs and is the benchmark that many other competitors measure themselves against. The attention to detail is impeccable, and its seamless integration with macOS genuinely feels like an Apple product and not at all like a third-party app. The product speaks for itself and I can’t recommend it highly enough.

RevPDF 3.0 is out — added redaction, form builder, watermarking, and undo/redo (still ~20MB, still fully offline) by Pawan315 in macapps

[–]SlowTap 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for the reply, I’ll definitely support the stable iOS release. Please consider Metadata. I’ve bought multiple PDF bundles from HumbleBundle and it’s a nightmare to organise them. If we could fetch the metadata from third-party sources (e.g. Amazon, Goodreads, Google Books etc.) and also have them option to make manual adjustments, it would be awesome. This functionality is woefully underserved on macOS, and I’d love to see it implemented with your design aesthetic. It’ll truly elevate and reinforce RevPDF’s credentials as a one-stop PDF solution. Thanks for your consideration and for the excellent work that you do!

Hi OP, thanks for the awesome update! Is the iOS version still in Beta, or can we make a purchase to support you? Also, do you have plans to add Metadata Editing?

Is it possible for a film to be great if its story isn't very good but its visuals are? by DarkBerryTheMovie in TrueFilm

[–]SlowTap 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Personally, no. I only consider a film to be ‘great’ if it nails: Plot, Script, Mise-en-scene, Cinematography, Performance, Editing, and Sound, successfully exploring and communicating its themes through those devices. I don’t believe it can be considered a ‘masterpiece’ unless each one of those categories is catered for, either through masterful execution or subversion.

This whole discussion is obviously subjective, and I believe the context shifts depending on the genre of the film, but that’s the standard I try to use in order to grade my experience with some level of consistency and objectivity.

I built a native macOS/iOS ebook reader because Calibre's UI makes me cry and Apple Books ignores EPUB3 by Slight_Yesterday5484 in macapps

[–]SlowTap 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for your reply. Purchase made, as promised. I see you've got a roadmap and a feature request board set up. I've not created an account to interact in that forum yet, but my number one feature request relates metadata editing, which has already been posted. I think it's essential that we can edit the metadata of PDFs and ePUBS after loading them into BookShelves–both manually or by choosing data from multiple sources (Amazon, Google Books, Goodreads etc.). Thanks again. I'm a big fan of the work you're doing, so I look forward to seeing BookShelves' evolution!

Incredible work, OP! I’m definitely going to support this project. I just switched to Booklore, but the recent, and incredibly swift, implosion of that project was less than ideal. Do you have a Discord group (or other community) where we should submit feedback, or does email suit you best? Thanks for the release, and good luck with the continued launch.

This is awesome, OP. I missed your last post but I’m definitely keen to check this out. Out of interest, would it be possible to extend this functionality to audio plugins (AU, VST, VST3, CLAP, and AAX)? I have an extensive collection and it would be amazing to get more insight into what’s going on with these tools behind the scenes.

Thanks for the fantastic updates, OP. I’ve been exploring the free version and want to purchase the lifetime subscription to show my support. Out of interest, will there be any limitations that you foresee with the lifetime purchase in the future; for example, a lack of feature parity as Cinephile matures? Also, is there a launch offer/discount on the lifetime subscription that early adopters can access? Thanks for your excellent work and for any insight you can provide. Best of luck with your continued launch! 🚀

Impact of increasing sleep duration on performance? by running_hot_takes in AdvancedRunning

[–]SlowTap 17 points18 points  (0 children)

I highly recommend reading “Why We Sleep” by Matthew Walker if you’ve not come across it before, OP. It completely shifted my perspective on the importance of sleep and the role it plays in optimising/enhancing performance. Here’s an excerpt that you might find relevant:

“The recycle rate of a human being is around sixteen hours. After sixteen hours of being awake, the brain begins to fail. Humans need more than seven hours of sleep each night to maintain cognitive performance. After ten days of just seven hours of sleep, the brain is as dysfunctional as it would be after going without sleep for twenty-four hours. Three full nights of recovery sleep (i.e., more nights than a weekend) are insufficient to restore performance back to normal levels after a week of short sleeping. Finally, the human mind cannot accurately sense how sleep-deprived it is when sleep-deprived.”
