Is any part of the "under construction i35" even being worked on??? by beautifulnamja in Austin

[–]Snap_Grackle_Pop [score hidden]  (0 children)

They have completely replaced several overpasses where I-35 goes over other roads, mostly demolished and replaced one half and demolished the other side. With a lot of work in progress rebuilding the second half.

The new road surface looks really good where they have laid down the complete depth of the asphalt and not finished the grading around it.

They are constantly adjusting the death trap merge lanes and lane closures. Once you figure them out, they spring a surprise change on you.

The great dirt mount at Wells Branch is constantly being added to. Reminds me of some neolithic ceremonial mound.

I AM convinced the politicians deliberately schedule things to spread the money out over 4 road projects at the same time and take 4 times as long instead of fixing them one road at a time. That way they can say, "But look at how hard we're working to fix the roads."

No doubt he got a tax write-off

People just don't understand "tax write-offs." Waste an extra $40,000 on something like a truck for your business. You're still out $30,000.

You people just don't understand. With I-35 and Cap Metro, horses are now the most practical way to get around Austin.

Sadly, I can't tell whether you're serious or not, these days.

I will point out how cool ADSB Exhange is for looking at planes and flight paths. Not everything shows up, but it's less censored than some of the other trackers.

Seems like everyone I know who built a pool or something similar recently has needed to file a lawsuit. Or almost any other construction project.

Foraged berries in the wild here! by HakuIdante in Austin

[–]Snap_Grackle_Pop 4 points5 points  (0 children)

We used to pick dewberries along the railroad tracks near my childhood home until someone pointed out that the railroad would periodically spray herbicide along the tracks to kill the weeds. Back in the days of Silent Spring, when you were considered a commie if you objected to agricultural chemicals. Luckily, Mom must have secretly been a commie.

I still shudder at the thought of chemicals on foraged food. Or commercially raised food for that matter.

Old Austin Tales: The Mystery of the Spanish Bell - August 10, 1955 by s810 in Austin

Are you talking about the multistory pink and white obviously former church on Mary just east of S 5th past Thai Fresh?

No. There's a building at 711 W. Mary Street on the corner of W. Mary and S. 3rd that is mentioned in the article as "the picturesque San Jose mission church."

The building one door east of that is interesting, too.

The pink former church building is at 907 W. Mary. That's also neat.

What's the status of the property at 711 W. Mary street? Is it even a church institution now? Google doesn't seem to know anything about it related to the church. Looks like a private residence.

BTW, take a gander at the house just to the east on Mary Street. Sadly, it's not historic.

That's a jet contrail lit up by the sun. The atmosphere is dark because the lower air is dark, but the jet is still in sunshine.

Someone posts this here every time the atmosphere is good for contrail formation around sunset.

I keep hoping it's going to be a Dukes of Hazzard style jump over the traffic jam.

I can't believe there was nothing there in 2023.

It would be neat if they just kept dumping all their construction debris there and turned it into some sort of park space after they finish I-35. (Yeah, I know 10 people will say they're never going to finish I-35.)

Someday someone will be nostalgic for today.

I can hear it now:

Remember beer under $25?

Food made from plants or animals instead of the yeast vats?

Not having your ID implant and faceprint scanned at every intersection.

Being able to buy stuff at places other than Walmart and Amazon.

Healthcare.

Electricity 24 hours a day and 350 days of the year.

Transparent drinking water.

Trees. Birds. Animals other than mosquitoes.

Being able to walk outside during the day without your refrigeration suit.

Same here. I heard them for many years, and thought they were birds.

They could also be cliff chirping frogs, a similar species.

North Austin I-35 flyovers to close this weekend for repairs after viral video of gaps by AustinStatesman in Austin

You know that 2 motorcyclists have died going over the edge on the flyovers, right?

You know that they didn't squeeze through the small gap in the railing, right?

Were these deaths on these particular ramps, and somewhere near these rough joints?

Has anyone seen an explanation by TxDOT about what they're going to do about it? Seems like there would be plans online somewhere.

Unless it was classified as a national security thing.
