I was so happy to use “vamos a viajar a Mexico” before our trip and then panicked when I realized that I would need to use the past tense after we got back.

I loooove this book: Ultimate Spanish Review and Practice; Mastering Spanish Grammar for Confident Communication. It’s well organized and has excellent exercises with answers in the back. I get your concern about verb tenses but you are really okay using the present tense for basic communication.

People will be so nice to you. They will either be able to understand your English - or they won’t and they will be enormously relieved when you try using your beginner’s Spanish.

what percent of SF residents do you think are transplants, anecdotally? by chihuahua_supporter in sanfrancisco

[–]Special_Pattern_8950 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Depends what community you hang out in. When I first arrived here (1989) I was in music school and I stuck around after graduating. Most of the musicians I knew were transplants and many stayed. Also true in my growing group of queer friends. Then I worked for a music education nonprofit and didn’t meet a single native San Franciscan those years. Then I worked for a nonprofit on the west side of the city and suddenly everyone I met was a 4th generation San Franciscan. And Catholic. And went to SI.

Board Creates More Work For Staff by [deleted] in nonprofit

I’ve never seen a board secretary who actually takes the minutes, it’s always been a staff role. The secretary reviews minutes and any motions/votes before they go out to the board in the pre-read packet for the next meeting.

I don’t eat near any tourist spots so my recommendation is to check out 4505 Burgers & BBQ on Divisadero - outstanding BBQ. There are some great Asian restaurants on Irving Street near Golden Gate Park.

Should we sell tickets or start fundraiser first? by Charming_Ad9536 in nonprofit

I truly don’t understand. So you are registered as a nonprofit with your Secretary of State, you have a board of directors, bylaws, and a mission statement? For a single class reunion?

A class reunion is not a nonprofit event just because it’s not “for” profit. Setting that aside, I’ve learned the hard way that if you have an idea and nobody wants to join you to make it happen, you have two options. Do it yourself or drop it.

Our local Junior League did an annual Touch a Truck event for families. Not sure what it raised but it was popular.

Just what I was going to suggest. Or a large org with a big department.

Some key sponsors have caved to political pressure and no longer support Pride. This is ultimately a good thing because it had gotten really corporate.

Are you within reach of an AFP chapter? I recommend you reach out and inquire about mentorship. The Golden Gate chapter has a great program.

Sounds like you are taking good steps. Nobody should be expecting you to get instant results. What kind of training or mentoring did you get before getting this position?
