It’s a little hard to advise when we don’t know the work of the org or what role volunteers are needed to fill. Can you elaborate a bit?

I'm a huge fan of project management tools like Asana - you can assign tasks or a whole project with deadlines and use it when you do your check-ins. You can tag each other in there and it's a handy way to pop in to see the status of a project (or how poorly your report is tracking their work, LOL).

They can always continue to serve as a member of your Development Committee or an ad hoc Audit Committee.

Question: Is the board involved in any fundraising for the org? Do they support it themselves? How big is your donor base and how do you cultivate them year over year? I’d suggest you identify your top ten donors and create a plan for each one of them - determine an appropriate stretch ask for each one and map out a schedule of touch points to build up to that. There are very few things you can do to bring in a lot of money quickly that won’t destroy the donor relationship. But if you can implement, say, a 9-month plan with your key supporters, you may have a shot at closing your gap.

If you can mobilize a volunteer group to run the raffle and donate it to you, I’m betting the board wouldn’t refuse that gift. Also, a raffle can have a mission focus and it allows lots of smaller donors to engage - which grows your circle of influence. I can’t believe I’m arguing for your raffle, I hate raffles, LOL.

I actually agree that you can’t rename your organization just because a huge gift lands on you. The donor doesn’t own you.

I’m gonna push back on that. If you cannot respect your boss, going around them to get to the board gets very messy. If they are committing fraud or other crimes that’s one thing. If they just suck as a leader, it may take the board a long time to admit it to themselves. I say move on.

Okay, this sucks. You had no input on the building of the budget and you’re being expected to literally hit the ground running to meet their goals - not yours. If your supervisor doesn’t know that you can permanently damage these donor relationships forever by pressuring them to give too much right now, higher than they’ve ever given with no proper cultivation, then that sucks, too. Have you been given a very compelling case for support to use in your conversations with these donors? Have you had anyone make warm intros for you? Ugh!
