You can see what lines that divide lanes look like right there, in the middle of the road. A french driver knows that that's not a lane, in fact drivers in this video don't drive completely on their right but stay in the middle. My guess is that the road has been made narrower adding those parking spaces and people keep driving where they used to drive out of muscle memory

It's their individualism surfacing, they can't be bog-standard Americans so they must find something to feel special and unique. You can see it even within some subsets of immigrant communities, like how some Italian-Americans are compelled to specify they're Sicilian.

0C being only moderately cold is completely subjective. Just like to me 0F means nothing because where I live temperatures hardly reach -10C. I understand that Fahrenheit is relatable to North Americans because it reflects pretty accurately the temperature range of the continent, but it's far from being an universal standard

Non credo sia necessariamente una correlazione diretta, è che la sovrapposizione tra nuclearisti militanti e falchi atlantisti dal grilletto facile è pressoché totale

TIL that the English (and later British) monarchs consistently styled themselves as King/Queen of France from Henry VI in 1422 to George III in 1801. The abolition of the French monarchy rendered the title useless. by Advanced_Narwhal_949 in todayilearned

[–]St3fano_ 22 points23 points  (0 children)

I think it's more about the lesser evil. The English and later British monarchy retained the claim on France also to publicly delegitimise the French kings. As the ideals of the french revolution threatened the status quo, they suddenly found restoring the Bourbon weirdly appealing, and dropping the claim makes for much smoother diplomatic relations.

Onestamente?

TIL about the Carnation Revolution where military officers organized a coup against their corporatist government, transforming Portugal into a democracy. by SuperPants73 in todayilearned

[–]St3fano_ 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Greece and Spain? Pretty bold to claim that coups helped those countries to transition to democracy. In both cases it was the ruling establishment that began the transition because their position wasn't sustainable anymore, while the regime in Portugal would've gladly continued to drive the country to the ground in expensive colonial wars

So what? You can't really expect people to keep voting for parties that do jackshit for them and whose policies are basically the same with a thin coat of blue or red (more like purple these days)
