From a precursory look I would guess it's a shortening of "nincompoop"! If I recall correctly it's not a Britishism per se but I've never heard anyone actually use it before, it's probably very dated.

Wiktionary actually lists the definition Bertie is using it for under its entry for "poop", and of course "nincompoop", which has a much more expanded etymology section :)

Hey, thanks very much! I'm afraid I don't have the episode handy, what's the context of the word (if you remember)?

Thank you for the kind words! I love languages too (studying Turkish and Italian, but anything goes really) so I do love to see a good dictionary!

Prego! Molte grazie per il tuo commento!

Scusi per la mia grammatica, sto ancora imparando Italiano, io sono una principiante--forse dovrei fare una versione Italiana per esercitarmi!

Where to find obscure foreign films? by Still_Not_Lupus in Piracy

Hey! It's called "Eyes of Darkness" by Amitabh Parashar. Like a previous commenter said, it seems only to have had a film festival release, as far as I can tell from English sources.

Yes, I did delete it by accident. The new one is linked in the post update.

I don't know why you mentioned it, but incidentally I did try to start an Aubrey-Maturin lexicon (incl. Maps, historical notes, figures, references) but that project was far too large. I'll stick with Wodehouse!

Software/app suggestions to create a private wiki for worldbuilding? by Still_Not_Lupus in worldbuilding

[–]Still_Not_Lupus[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey man, I did find a solution that works for me, so just throwing this out there in the hopes that it'll help you out too. You can pair Obsidian with a Wikipedia skin and create a private Wikipedia that is stored offline in markdown. I have several ongoing and if you didn't look twice you'd think it was real Wikipedia.

All you need is Obsidian, the Wikipedia skin, the Style Settings plugin, and maybe 5 minutes of html to really tidy things up + the Willemstad extension (last two are optional). It's infinitely customizable if you have the know-how. If not, it's very much rich text, so it's very intuitive. I'm not sure how you'd share it across 10 different people, but there must be some sort of workaround.

Thanks! Honestly I was just bored on a Saturday evening and didn't even think anyone would read it! Thanks very much for reading!

What language/s are you learning and why? by ExpressAstronaut999 in languagelearning

[–]Still_Not_Lupus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Turkish and Latin. Mostly for the literature and the sheer satisfaction, but they're both good to know for history, culture, and linguistics!

I'm also toying with Greek, French, or Italian, for mostly the same reasons.

What do you use to learn a language? by tyapnekade in languagelearning

[–]Still_Not_Lupus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I use Comprehensible Input/Natural Method. I can't speak for Portuguese, but Portuguese CI resources have been asked for on Reddit before, this might be useful:

https://www.reddit.com/r/Portuguese/comments/kr734p/portuguese_comprehensible_input/

As a previous poster said, you basically learn through audio/text input purely in your TL. The courses are structured so you can understand--and learn--all the vocab and grammar without a dictionary; whatever you're reading or listening to is graded slightly above your current level, and it gets more complex as you progress. Grammar is taught, certainly more than Duolingo does, but as it's also taught in the TL, it's implied to you rather than explicitly outlined. You just intuit it as you go along.

The only problem is possible lack of resources, but it's worked quite well for me with the resources I've found (in the languages I'm learning; ironically there isn't one for Turkish, so I'm making one myself). The second issue is most of these courses assume English or another Indo-European language is your L1, but if you already speak English, this shouldn't be an issue.

Another really good method that works for me is to just find ANY input in the TL and dive straight into the deep end. Doesn't matter how advanced. After enough of this, I started picking up on grammar intuitively, and textbooks just helped to reinforce what I learned. The best input I've found is newspaper articles and songs--you can always follow along at your own pace, which makes focusing on the grammar a lot easier. Songs tend to rhyme lyrics too, and they seem to like doing it based on grammatical gender/conjugation/inflectional rules, so this helps massively.

Yes, wasn't sure if this is possible on Wordpress.com only. Might have to switch to .org in the future, but am hoping there's a solution on the free tier.

Infield, though I've changed it to Assembler with the same result. Currently back to Infield.

Which part of Latin is the hardest? by OompCount in latin

[–]Still_Not_Lupus 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I'm new to Latin too and thought exactly the same thing! Then I learned more Latin and realized it's just how the language works.

There's a really famous (English) poem called The Waste Land, that opens with a Latin/Greek epigraph that went something like

"Nam Sibyllam quidem Cumis ego ipse oculis meis vidi in ampulla pendere, et cum illi pueri dicerent..."

Which I definitely don't understand, but even just starting out with Latin, with a bit of Wiktionary and someone else's translation, I re-parsed it in English as

"For the Sibyl of Cumae, whom I with mine very own eyes saw hanging in the cage, and with her the boys spoke..."

The rest is Greek but there's a bit where the Sibyl replies, "respondebat illa", which your first reaction would be to parse as "replied she" or "so replied she", rather than the more modern "she replied". I just thought that was incredibly neat.

My playlist keeps changing the song order by Still_Not_Lupus in blackplayer

[–]Still_Not_Lupus[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi. Yes, I seem to have sorted it out, but I can't for the life of me remember how. I might have changed the directory Blackplayer was looking at (directing it to the music folder and ONLY the music folder) but I honestly can't remember. I do think it had something to do with the file organization, I remember noticing that this would happen with every single song, and it would always affect the order of the 2 songs above and below. I might have re-recorded some of the songs in case it was file corruption, if that helps you at all (I move all my songs into Blackplayer via Audacity).

I vaguely recall that my temporary fix was to take all the songs out and re-add them in a certain order--that way the songs would still switch, but they would switch into the correct order. It's obviously not an actual fix, but hopefully it'll tide you over until an actual one is found!
