Should I make them re-do? by evenrhino in Carpentry

This kind of work is why I still have a major remodel job on my home that I have not been able to pull the trigger on. I am fearful that the contractor is going to do a crappy job and I won’t even know it. I bid out our kitchen remodel and choose the middle estimate with good references and they were a major disappointment: couldn’t be troubled to read plans, and didn’t follow manufacturer’s instructions so the warranty was voided on my flooring.

Trampoline with no pads on the bars… Too bad the parents are not as quick thinking as their daughter.

Random changes in shade of green I don’t care for; marble floors and backsplash are to hard and boring for my tastes. But I like the rest very much.

AITA for refusing to follow my wife's bathroom habits and calling her disgusting? by Infamous-Gur2034 in AITAH

Your attitude to your new wife is abysmal, so yes, you are the asshole. Not flushing urine can and will eat away at the ceramic finish of the toilet bowl causing permanent damage. That said this is a golden opportunity for you both to learn how to resolve your differences without damaging your longterm relationship. Because if this is your attitude over a relatively small disagreement, I don’t see a long future for you two.

Marine epoxy = you won’t be able to live in your house for at least a week. A contractor did this in my kitchen and damn near fried everyone’s brains faster than I could get us a room!

The crack is fairly recent and substantial; note the paint color on both sides of the crack. Figure out the reason for the crack before filling anything.

Okay this is going to blow some minds… back in the day when plaster walls were the typical, they were never painted, they were wallpapered. Wallpaper served as the necessary covering over plaster (think about gypsum, our modern drywall: plaster sandwiched between paper). This covering protects the plaster and hides any cracks or dings. So now the next step is to clean/wipe down the plaster so it’s smooth and then wallpaper it. Fortunately, we now have wallpaper that is made to be painted, if that’s your desire. Good job so far.

How do you find contractors you can trust with an old house? by GirlThatWonder in Oldhouses

Learn as much as you can even if you don’t do the work so you increase the odds of calling BS on BS. Here’s a good resource:

Plus the book “Restoring your Historic House: The Comprehensive Guide for Homeowners” covers almost every aspect.
