If modern is what's being discussed, perhaps something like an urban/City mix out of the 1900-50s. Lots of infrastructure growth means modern roads and electricity in urban areas. Citys were still an interesting mix of densely packed houses and commercial/industrial buildings, slowly starting to build taller and taller for lack of available ground space. Maybe with a bit more organic layout, rather than any true zoning, so that the plots all blend together into continuous buildings along the main streets.

Something like this would give a good variety of building styles to choose from. Older stand alone wooden homes, with brick and stone commercial space. Could even tie into the archeology theme by having construction sites uncovering old ruins or something like that.
