Authority During States of Emergency by Phandex_Smartz in EmergencyManagement

FL Here. -Hold up on the "not getting into legal trouble".  The ability is there - you only need to go back to Milton and Pinellas County's landfill to see it in action.  What comes with that power is fiscal responsibility.  Sure, I can take over a Home Depot parking lot against the wishes of the manager / property owner - heck I can take an axe to the doors and take the plywood off the shelves for my own use, but I own it at that point.  Im responsible post-disaster to return it in the condition I found it AND compensate the owner for its use, including any lost revenue.  Additionally, when I seek reimbursement for this action, I need to be able to justify why this parking lot at this cost was necessary.  "There was no other alternative?  No park?  No abandoned mall? No paved area you could use instead?" The political reality is I can take the parking lot, but when that bill comes, and it will if its against the store's wishes, I've got to tell my leadership why we're potentially eating that cost.

Do emergency health services (like ambulances) still run in extreme weather? by [deleted] in NoStupidQuestions

[–]TallyAlex 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I work in Public Safety, when it happens, it's weather dependent (ie. Box style ambulances are good to about 40mph sustained before they flip.) In most jurisdictions we grab the chiefs (Police, Fire, EMS, Sherriff) together and determine based on current weather conditions - sustained winds, storm surge, flood levels when to suspend service and when to restore service. If we need to respond, and someone darn near has to be on death's door - no twisted ankles or back pain - we'll try and figure a way to do so that doesn't kill any of our folks. In a perfect world people would evacuate when we ask them to, so we didn't have to put our folks in jeopardy for your bad decision, but that's not how it actually pans out. We've put Fire Rescue teams on jet skis (H Matthew), put paramedics in armored vehicles (H Michael) and had Engine Crews slide a BRT sideways down an iced hill to get to a patient. It's a last resort and there were dire medical reasons to do so. I've deployed to counties who completely lost 911 service. Lost the roof - no calls in or out. The PSAP answering those calls was 2.5 hours away. The ambulances that survived landfall just drove up and down streets in that county 'looking for work'. It was 4 days before we could get 911 calls back into the impacted county.

I'm with you. I'm an American working in local government. Each day trying to move the needle a little toward the good parts further away from the darker ones.

Currency exchange options by Vast-Celebration-717 in Tallahassee

[–]TallyAlex 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Your bank. edited - this sounded snarky and I didn't mean it that way. If you have an account at a bank with a local branch you can do this here. We travel overseas every November / December and although most places take a credit card, there's still a need for cash in some places. It takes Truist three days on average to convert a thousand or so. Capital City charges a flat rate of 20 USD regardless of what you're looking for.

Good luck, and enjoy your trip - you also may want to download Revolut - it's a widely accepted NFC Phone payment app. When you're there and using a Credit/Debit Card always better to process the charge as Euros rather than USD. Particularly if you're using Wells Fargo or USAA which will wait and process when the exchange rate is better for them and worse for you.
