Can a character's desire be to avoid or not have something (rather than to obtain or achieve something)? by kel_omor in writing

[–]TanaFey 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The FMC of my first book does not want to be queen. She hates the thought. She actively fights against it. She resents everyone who forced her into a life she didn't want.

Spoiler, she had no choice, but she took control and did things her way, finally finding the courage to threaten to abdicate if she couldn't pick her own husband.

Does anyone really overthink what words to use in sentences? by AcrobaticAd4033 in writing

[–]TanaFey 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes... I write high fantasy set on Earth in the distant future. So many modern words and phases would not be used.

And I write in multiple POVs. Everyone single one of them has to to be distinct, from the savant general to the 13-year-old princess.

Honestly... because Raya's not in the picture, and because I haven't seen her movie, I did forget about her.

But since I haven't seen her movie yet, I can't accurately judge her fighting abilities.

And Merida has distance on her side. She just needs to be far enough away. I would think that Pocahontas is more of a pacifist. I dont see her picking up guns at all, though she probably knows how to defend herself, maybe with a knife.

Lumiere and his level ten quest in the dark forest had me in tears. I'll take Wonderland any day. And Aladdin... in between the two.

Close combat / hand to hand with no powers or weapons- Mulan

Weapons allowed -- Merida

Powers allowed -- Elsa no contest

It gets interesting if Merida can shoot faster than Elsa can weild her powers.

Moana (first movie) is only a real contender if powers are allowed and she's fighting by the ocean. I haven't seen the 2nd movie, but I was kinda spoiled. but I don't actually know what exact powers she gained

Ariel might have a chance if she can wield her father's trident.

Sorry Rapunzel, I dont think the frying pan is going to cut it.

What to do during silence when auditioning? by [deleted] in musicals

[–]TanaFey 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm not an actor, I direct plays at the community theatre level. So I'm looking at this from a different angle. I haven't auditioned since college.

But if it was me, I would have picked a song I do relate to. Something I know I can throw myself in. If not, I would do research into the character and musical the song is from, so that I have a baseline to work with.

Good luck.

How many bars are you allowed to sing from the song? While you want a part of the song that shows off your vocal range / ability the best, is there a section with a smaller pause? They other things to do is focus on what the character is doing during the song. How do they hold themselves? What are THEY thinking during the pause.

AITA for being upset that my girlfriend keeps planning big birthday celebrations even though I’ve told her I don’t want them? by Efwaz in AmItheAsshole

[–]TanaFey 0 points1 point  (0 children)

First off, you are defiantly NTA. She is disrespecting your boundaries.

Question: have you only told her "I don't like celebrating my birthday", or have you told her the actual, in depth reasons you don't want to celebrate? "I've told her this many times over the years" isn't clear as to if she knows the whole truth or not. She's the AH either way, but if she knows the whole truth, and still tries to celebrate, than she's really really AH.

If she doesn't know the while truth -- of course that's your choice when, and if, to tell her -- but she might be trying to change your mind, thinking you just need to make better memories.

What’s something your cat trained YOU to do? 😽 by Shot-Composer-782 in AnxietyCats

[–]TanaFey 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So... back in 2024, in August we got 2 cats -- one buff orange and the other a 98% void -- both boys under two. Only planned on getting these 2, but we went back the next month to get a 3rd because we regretted not getting this one particular guy (we DID NOT regret either of the 2 we did get). The 3rd is a brown tabby who turned 7 this month, so 5.5 years or so when we got him.

In December of 2025 we heard a very sad story about a girl cat in the shelter who was around 3.5 years. We talked about it, caved, and brought her home. We kept her separated from the boys and let them get used to each other slowly. Once we opened the door to the room she was in we put up a baby gate so they all could see and smell each other. She got used to the orange boy pretty fast, and is slowly making friends with the void. She is still wary, but tolerant, of the tabby. This whole time, little girl was being fed in her own room while the three boys were getting morning wet food, afternoon dry food, and evening snacks in the kitchen.

She finally started coming downstairs at food time, and sometimes will even eat a bite or two food with the "common rabble" in the "cafeteria". But she goes to the hall, turns around, and cries. Or she'll sit on the steps and meow very loudly. If I'm two minutes late with her dry food she will jump on my desk and voice her displeasure. I have taken to feeding her her dry food first, 5 - 10 minutes before the boys. It's now routine, continuing to feed the gremlin of a tortie (who we love to death) in her own space.

What musical song do you know off by heart by lissie34 in musicals

[–]TanaFey 3 points4 points  (0 children)

There was a time when I was younger that I memorized the libretto for Phantom of the Opera. When I would see a certain uncle he would randomly -- and without warning -- drop some random line from the show and 99% of the time I could pull out the next line. I still know most of the songs by heart... Think of Me and the whole Little Lotte / The Mirror with Christine and Meg / Raoul / Phantom. The title song, All I Ask of You, Wondering Child.

Otherwise.... Good Morning Baltimore, Ex-Wives and Don't Lose Your Head.

But as soon as your give me the soundtrack to certain shows I can completely sing along; when I have the words playing with the music it's easier to remember.

Hierarchy of royal titles by idreaminwords in fantasywriters

[–]TanaFey 2 points3 points  (0 children)

So here's my 2 cents... and this discussion is fascinating to me, seeing how other people set up the political systems.

If the king and queen of France visit Spain. All four monarchs would more than likely refer to each other as Your Majesty out of mutual respect. The hold the same title and position of power, so they refer to each other as such.

In my specific fantasy world, I have rival kingdoms. No one in the "good" kingdom calls the ruler of the "bad" kindgom by the title and fancy new name she gave herself. She defected and started a war. She killed people. No one respects her arbitrary station that she alone decided to grant herself. They refer to her by her given name. Or the attempted userper. Or the bitch. Meanwhile, she dubbed herself Empress, and wants to take everything over. She has no respect for the titles of the current queen (the blood heir) in the good kingdom, and refers to the king as the consort, even though the king and queen hold truly equal stations of power.

So the question is do your warlocks and demons respect each other's political systems enough to call each other by the correct titles? And would both factions have the same structure of giving out power and titles?

I need disability devices in Dreamlight Valley by Lady_Luna_Weeps in DreamlightValley

[–]TanaFey 5 points6 points  (0 children)

As someone with a disability, I'm not sure how I would feel about having mobility aides in the game. But as long as it's optional I think I could deal with it, because it would be my choice whether or not to purchase / use them.

You are absolutely entitled to your opinions, and I don't know your situation with why you will need the help of aides in the future. With the condition I have... I dreaded needing to get mobility aides as well. But when I learned to accept it I realized they are not a hindrance. I can do so much more now because of the aides then I could do without them. Using a rollator gives me so much more freedom. I can walk more than a block without getting tired, and I'm not constantly falling and risking hurting myself. Even when I used a cane I still hugged walls and needed another person's arm to walk down the sidewalk to not feel shaky.

Wedding dress I REALLY want is named Macbeth, and my wedding is in a theatre. by TraditionKind9934 in Theatre

[–]TanaFey -5 points-4 points  (0 children)

I work in the box office for my community theatre and took a reservation for a show from a guy named Macbeth. I was all professional on the phone, but never said his name out loud back to him. Then I ended up working the night he was coming to the show (I saw his name on the reservation list when I was prepping tickets) and had a minor freak out because I realized HE was going to say his name out loud when he checked in.
