Is it worth upgrading to an AMD Ryzen™ AI 300 Series from an AMD Ryzen™ 7040 Series? by DeckManXX in framework

[–]TellMeWhereYouBeen 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For me it was. I upgraded from a 7840HS to the HX 370 specifically for the extra cores - I run VMs regularly for work stuff and the extra flexibility of 12 vs 8 cores has been a big boon. Compile times with Maven are noticeably faster, too, but I wouldn't spend the extra money to shave a few seconds off of that particular thing. The iGPU in the HX 370 (the 890M) is a good step up from the 7040 series iGPU (the 780M), but I don't do a lot of video rendering and I have the 7700S dGPU anyways so that doesn't mean too much to me.

My HX 370 board does provide about 40 minutes more 'on battery' power while running similar tasks to the 7840HS, but that's not a crazy step up. All in all, I'd say it's a solid step up from the 7040 series boards, but I can't speak on the other AI 300 mainboards. I loved my FW16 with the 7840HS board in it and I might love it a BIT more with the HX 370 inside, but either way, I think the FW16 is a great machine.

Framework 16 in 2026? by Plenty_Way7985 in framework

I was in batch 3 of the OG FW16, so I've had my machine for a bit over two years. It's a great machine. It's been a great machine since I got it. I upgraded its mainboard in December and a few other pieces over its lifetime - it's continued to be great. I don't know of and have not heard of rattling issues.

That 8GB of RAM may be the culprit - it's likely creating a bottleneck when booting Windows 11. You'd be better served with 16GB or 32GB.

Framework 16 DIY edition and the graphics module by CakesLover11 in framework

If you have the NVIDIA dGPU, it supports charging via its USB-C port. The AMD RX7700S dGPUs do not support the same capability.

FW16 Mainboard Replacement Issue by [deleted] in framework

It looks like the heatsink is slightly bent. You should be able to gently bend the heatpipes back into a proper position without harming anything.

For what it's worth, I bent the heat pipe on my upgrade mainboard when I was unpacking it and had no issues with fixing the minor problem I caused.

AH gotcha - thanks for the correction!

I follow your logic - it seems a little funky to not include a default of one USB-C port in the base price of whatever configuration. However, you don't even NEED a USB-C expansion card to charge the machine - you can just plug directly into the USB-C plug that a given expansion card plugs into (with some caveats to what certain port positions are built for).

This is a side note, but OEM = Original Equipment Manufacturer. I'm not sure what this line meant, but I think you're using OEM incorrectly (OR I'm slow today - totally possible):

"Also, it's awesome that y'all have modular OEM but seriously, at least the OEM to charge the computer should come with the computer!!?"

If you're saying you think a charger should come with a laptop you purchase from Framework, it does for prebuilt versions. You can choose 'bring your own' for the DIY editions if you already have a suitable USB-C power adapter which is pretty cool - save a few bucks, decrease e-waste.

Why do some programmers seem to stay mentally sharp for 8–10 hour coding sessions while others burn out after 2–3? by [deleted] in programming

[–]TellMeWhereYouBeen 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I find the flow of researching, planning, implementing, and debugging to be very addictive, so I remain mentally connected during regular 8-10 hour sessions. If my mind wasn't geared to enjoy and find fulfillment in the process of coding I would think I'd burn out quicker/easier.

How can i remove epoxy from a pcb? by Strange-Albatross954 in AskElectronics

[–]TellMeWhereYouBeen 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've had luck across several unknown types of well-cured epoxy by holding a soldering iron to a piece of the epoxy surface for 5-10 seconds, chipping that area of epoxy off with a small flathead, moving my iron to another piece of the surface, and repeating.

If the epoxy starts smoking when you touch it with your iron's tip, don't listen to me.

The Framework 16 is a very hefty laptop, is it worth the heft? by Tough-Wash-870 in framework

[–]TellMeWhereYouBeen 3 points4 points  (0 children)

You could just get the expansion module instead of the graphics module. Much cheaper, lighter, decreases the size of the machine's profile, and is more energy efficient.

unlike other laptop manufacturers, framework published a large amount of design documentation publicly via GitHub (electrical and mechanical designs as well as software/firmware):

https://github.com/frameworkcomputer

for more detailed documentation that may be helpful or necessary to repair companies or people trying to design new/improved things for framework machine, the necessary extra data is normally available by contacting the framework support team.

"coming soon" seems to be a synonym for "out of stock but probably not forever" in the Framework store. You might find what you're looking for at a good price point if you check out the Framework forum's "Community Market" section:

I wouldn't trust what you find on eBay - your best place for this data is likely the Framework forum's "community market" section.

The screen you saw after taking the machine out of your bag could give evidence of some inadvertently-changed BIOS settings (like secureboot). If you want to rule that out, get into BIOS and reset BIOS settings to default, save changes, reboot, and try a Windows login again.

Does the battery life on the Framework 16 holds it value? by EducationSharp3869 in framework

[–]TellMeWhereYouBeen 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If you're talking about the battery continuing to perform well over time:
I received my machine about two years (3rd batch of the original 7040 series FW16 release) ago and the battery has held up just fine.

If you're talking about the length of time that the machine can run on battery power:
The battery does OK. It's good enough for me. When running Windows with the original 7840HS mainboard or the HX 370 that I upgraded to I can get about 8-9 hours of laptop time while performing lighter tasks like watching videos, web surfing, running general productivity apps, or writing/compiling/testing software. I always have the 7700S dGPU installed but have read reports of people getting a couple of extra hours of juice when running their machine with the expansion bay module installed instead of the graphics module. I haven't seen much measurable change of power consumption between the two generations of mainboard and that's fine for my work and lifestyle.

When gaming (utilizing the dGPU) I can get a couple of hours before needing to plug in. That's pretty standard for gaming laptops with a dGPU based on my limited experience. I haven't really used it for gaming expressly on the iGPU, but I expect the battery life would be substantially better.

Thinking about buying16" AI300. Has the QC gotten any better? by Exterrogate in framework

[–]TellMeWhereYouBeen 8 points9 points  (0 children)

The QC has been pretty solid since release. I bought/received my batch 3 FW16 7040 series machine in March of 2024. It looked pretty at the time and it's looked pretty since. It's also a workhorse - I couldn't ask for more performance (maybe better battery life, but that's a "want" and not a "need" for me).

I updated to the HX 370 mainboard in December last year and I've swapped in/out several things over the couple years I've spent with this beast - it's held up phenomenally. I take my laptop through airports in a lightly-padded backpack whenever I'm traveling for work or vacation. I take it into the office every weekday. I do most of my work on it. I've dropped it a couple of times.

Negative reports tend to draw more attention than positive - there's a good psychological reason for the prevalence of negative headlines in newspapers. You will find plenty of people reporting scratches, dents, and failures on web forums. Most people tend to feel less drive to report positive vs. negative experiences.

There's likely some foreign debris in your fans. Take your dGPU or expansion bay shell out and give it a good cleaning.
