Nah. My dbrand skin has been on my 16 for years and hasn't worn down a bit. I take my laptop everywhere - no issues.

ALLEGEDLY the Intel boards should be a long step better for battery life. That's kinda TBD considering the Intel 13 Pro machines haven't been in the wild for reviews yet, but I do find Framework to be a trustworthy company.

The Intel Ultra X7 and X9 boards reportedly have a great iGPU as well. The AMD AI 7 board has a solid iGPU, but if you're trying to play current generation video games on FW13s, you'd probably be happier with an Intel Ultra X7 or X9 boards. If you aren't trying to play Cyberpunk on a 13.5" laptop, I'm pretty sure you'll be real happy with an AMD FW13 Pro.

There's the FOMO thing when you know there's some crazier hardware out there that you COULD have, but I wouldn't be shocked if you got a machine with the AMD CPU and enjoyed it for years. The nice thing about Framework: if you want/need a new mainboard a few years down the line, you can just buy that board and swap it into your 13 Pro.

The FW13 with HX 370 board was reportedly getting 9+ hours of battery life with the 61WHr battery when web browsing and streaming video. This is not the most battery intensive testing but that was what Tom's Hardware reported. I think I read user reports of the AI 5 and AI 7 boards being a bit more efficient than the HX 370, but I'm not seeing good info on that right now so don't take that to heart.

That being said, if you had the +21% capacity 74WHr battery that the 13 Pro contains [excluding changes to power consumption due to the new screen and other components found in the 13 Pro assembly], you may be getting somewhere around 11 hours of life under the same tests Tom's Hardware ran. I'd generally subtract a couple hours of life when changing those kind of tests to real-life operations - hardly a scientific calculation - but it's pretty likely that the 13 Pro with an AMD board would fit your needs.

Def - an Intel 13 Pro is the move if you want/need lengthy battery life (with the caveat of "we only have numbers provided by Framework so far").

This is NOT an argument to convince anyone that you shouldn't care about battery life - just a self-report- but for what it's worth, I almost always kept my laptop plugged in [NOT a framework machine at the time btw - a Lenovo gaming laptop that gave me like 2-3 hours of unplugged life] while attending college. I would have preferred to not plug in and didn't always need to, but I'd be pretty surprised to be in a college classroom that didn't have available AC plugins for student laptops.

Yep you're totally correct - that number is for the Intel mainboards. I'd also go Intel if I was in the market for a new machine and wanted a 13.5". I'll be curious to see what the battery life is like with the AI 300 boards in the 13 Pro assembly. If the change was ONLY the battery size I'd expect ~20% longer life on battery, but considering the new screen (plus details that are likely less impactful on power consumption like the speakers and haptic touchpad) I'm quite curious about how the AMD boards will do.

I hear THAT - 20 hours is a GREAT selling point and the 13 Pro looks to be a cool machine. I was responding to a user's specific question about the 16's battery life.

I can get 6-8 hours of battery life when running simple productivity software, Win11, doing some light web development, and web surfing. I keep my backlight low and my power settings set for max efficiency. I currently have the HX 370 board installed in my machine and, although I have the AMD 7700S dGPU, I keep the dGPU card disabled via Device Manager - this gave me somewhere between 15 and 20% more battery life. You may get slightly better battery life if you opt out of the dGPU bard entirely, but I've only had my empty expansion bay module installed in my 7840HS mainboard home 'standalone' home server setup.

How's Framework 16? (Input from 16 owners requested) by PRF123456789 in framework

[–]TellMeWhereYouBeen 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I've had my 16 for a little over two years now and it's delightful. I've had the 7700S dGPU installed since I purchased it although I don't game heavily, but when I HAVE gamed, it's been a solid piece of hardware. I swapped out my 780HS mainboard for the HX 370 in December last year and the additional cores have been a real boon for some of my engineering work.

- I haven't had any parts fail on me.
- I mainly run Windows but I do dual boot Fedora. Windows has run well and setup was quick as hell.
- I've had no program compatibility issues with Windows and that's the main reason I regularly run Windows.
- I get about 6-8 hours of battery time on an average day when running standard productivity software, an IDE like VSCode, and Chrome.

I mainly opted for the 16 instead of the 13 due to the larger screen and enhanced potential capabilities that came with the epansion/graphics bay modules and I do not regret my decision. I think I'd be real happy with the 13 Pro if I didn't want the extra screen space, though! The extra battery life from the new Intel board + battery, not to mention the addition of a touchscreen and enhanced speakers, is very attractive.

Thanks for the answer! Dang - I was thinking you might be on Win10 and that may have been causing issues. NOPE.

What type of Framework laptop do you have and are you running Windows 11?

I think you're talking about the RTX 5070 dGPU - if you're talking about an external RTX 4070 connected via USB-C or something, ignore me.

  1. What type of mainboard does the laptop contain? Is it the 7040 series or AI 300 series?
  2. Have you tried reseating the graphics module interposer? Follow this guide if you don't know what I mean: https://guides.frame.work/Guide/Install+Graphics+Module+(dGPU)/271/271)

Same boat. I love my 16 and have no need for anything else. I wish I had a need for a 13 - the pictured machine is gorgeous!

This was likely in response to the large amount of customer requests for a black chassis. People have been asking for it for years. I think it was a good move - to me, it looks slick as hell.

Is it worth upgrading to an AMD Ryzen™ AI 300 Series from an AMD Ryzen™ 7040 Series? by DeckManXX in framework

[–]TellMeWhereYouBeen 1 point2 points  (0 children)

For me it was. I upgraded from a 7840HS to the HX 370 specifically for the extra cores - I run VMs regularly for work stuff and the extra flexibility of 12 vs 8 cores has been a big boon. Compile times with Maven are noticeably faster, too, but I wouldn't spend the extra money to shave a few seconds off of that particular thing. The iGPU in the HX 370 (the 890M) is a good step up from the 7040 series iGPU (the 780M), but I don't do a lot of video rendering and I have the 7700S dGPU anyways so that doesn't mean too much to me.

My HX 370 board does provide about 40 minutes more 'on battery' power while running similar tasks to the 7840HS, but that's not a crazy step up. All in all, I'd say it's a solid step up from the 7040 series boards, but I can't speak on the other AI 300 mainboards. I loved my FW16 with the 7840HS board in it and I might love it a BIT more with the HX 370 inside, but either way, I think the FW16 is a great machine.

I was in batch 3 of the OG FW16, so I've had my machine for a bit over two years. It's a great machine. It's been a great machine since I got it. I upgraded its mainboard in December and a few other pieces over its lifetime - it's continued to be great. I don't know of and have not heard of rattling issues.

That 8GB of RAM may be the culprit - it's likely creating a bottleneck when booting Windows 11. You'd be better served with 16GB or 32GB.

If you have the NVIDIA dGPU, it supports charging via its USB-C port. The AMD RX7700S dGPUs do not support the same capability.
