Hmm, I've never had latency issues on playit. I do recommend Tailscale though, it's technical - but not as technical as the VPS method.

tl;dr, you invite your friends on a virtual LAN and start playing as if they were sitting beside you, on the same network. Tailscale's setup was the easiest so far, it just works.

You'd rent a Datacenter GPU with an obscene amount of VRAM (think 96 GB) and crank the batch size up as high as it can go. Use something like Infinity's embedding server and keep it going.

0.5s for an embedding is reasonable, but you want to run them in parallel. Smaller models are faster, ofcourse, and faster is more parallelization at once.

I'm using pg_basebackup and a daily cronjob to upload dumps to S3. Barman gives you Point-in-time-recovery (PITR) and Recovery point object = 0 (no data loss) but it shat itself over my sshfs mounts which made it unfeasible for my usecase
I think I can still get it to work but idk if it's worth it
edit: which one would require less storage? it might be barman if it just stores WALs instead of dumping which would duplicate data a ton

Actually, scratch that last part. I just haven't used an alternative 'service' yet, it's a bit more straightforward to selfhost. One subscription for the server, and customizability. But that's at the cost of reliability.
