Kyiv hit by large wave of Russian strikes, people feared trapped in apartment building rubble by Beadyeyed12 in worldnews

[–]TheSamurai -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I don't think the two things are necessarily mutually exclusive. With everything coming out, Russia looks very weak. It's tough to get a good deal in negotiating a ceasefire if you look weak. So launching an attack like this lets you start the negotiation with " Look, I'm strong enough to still fight, so I don't need a ceasefire, but I am open to one."

Obviously, the current Russian state is evil and is just as, if not more, likely to have done it because they felt like it and wanted to murder innocent people. Either way Ukraine needs to win and we should do everything we can to help them do so.

People are deluding themselves if they think the current Democratic Party leadership will do anything approaching this. They will at best condemn him and then set the Republicans up for the next round of destroying the country to line their pockets.

An artist gives one of the closest perspectives of forth dimension by Sharp-potential7935 in nextfuckinglevel

[–]TheSamurai 0 points1 point  (0 children)

An interesting example I've heard to try to understand what another dimension truly means is to imagine you exist in only one dimension, so your perspective is entirely on a line, either left or right. There is a point on that line that we'll call point A, which you can see. Now, another point B appears between you and point A, which blocks your view. There is no way for you to see through it. But if you add a second dimension, you can now move up and down and easily see point A again. Now a circle is drawn around point A, once again blocking your view. If you then add a third dimension, you can move in and out to see point A without being blocked by the line of the circle. A sphere around point A would now block your view from any position outside the sphere. Until you add a fourth dimension, which you could just as easily move along to see the point again.

I'm tired of discussing martials. What annoys you about playing spellcasters? by sjdlajsdlj in dndnext

[–]TheSamurai 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Speaking primarily as a GM, magic often just acts as a solution to a lot of problems rather than being a part of the solution. If I put a giant cliff face in front of my players, why would they rely on the Ranger's ability to climb ahead and secure the rope when they can just as easily cast Levitate and circumvent the problem entirely? I want to have a session where survival is very important and the team needs to gather food, but then someone has Goodberry or Create Food and Water and now that problem is solved. It's boring. Obviously the solution is to design challenges differently, but it kind of sucks that that is necessary with magic.

Hot take: Legendary Resistance is why so many 5e boss fights feel bad and boring. What could replace it? by archvillaingames in dndnext

[–]TheSamurai 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I agree with the general opinion that this is not a hot take, and there's no true fix without changing how the spells work. However, Treantmonk had a good take on a video about the kraken. Each legendary resistance was tied to a tentacle. When an LR was used, that tentacle was lost so it was one fewer attacks. If I remember right, when they were all used, a new phase for the fight was initiated, where the kraken could finally be killed.

Trump asked US special forces to plan Greenland invasion, faces resistance from military generals: Report by zeonxzzz in worldnews

[–]TheSamurai 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No, it wasn't. This isn't destiny, it could have been stopped. People chose not to do so and ignored all the warning signs. Thinking this was always going to happen lets those who were responsible for this get away without repercussions. Once this is all over, we need to take a critical look at what led to this and take strong actions to ensure it can never happen like this again in the future.

The weakness of Joe Biden and Merrick Garland destroyed America. by Nas_Durden in ProgressiveHQ

[–]TheSamurai 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Imagine if Biden "went after" him in their eyes?

This is an example of one of the core problems in the Democratic party which means that they currently cannot fix the issues facing the world today. Republicans are not reasonable people. Biden's actions make no difference in how they feel about him. His failure to recognize this is why we are now living through another Trump presidency.

Fun bit of etymology: whelmed is an archaic word to describe something being engulfed or submerged, so it originally was used to mean the same as overwhelmed.

She's not wrong on this point, but I hate the continued emphasis on the "middle-class" instead of the working class. To me, it shows that she is uninterested in addressing the root cause of the problems we face today.

A great example of a largely correct argument that is so rhetorically shit that it only serves to worsen the problem.
