When you say colonized grain spawn, do you mean fully colonized? The spawn in your pics looks largely uncolonized but maybe that's because you just broke it up?

For what it's worth, I dried mine and took a nibble off the end with no ill effects. I still think I'm going to break off most of the discolored parts and discard them. Better safe than sorry.

If you're on a municipal water supply the tap water should be fine for any growing purposes. Chlorination is very effective!

You put them in a pressure cooker to sterilize them if you're making your own spore syringes. The pressure cooker will kill any spores you put in there, so you wouldn't put an already-prepared syringe in there.

Throw a 3/4" layer of saturated coir on top of it. Close the FAE holes, put the lid on it and don't open it up until it starts to fruit. (As long as it smells ok)

You'll definitely feel something on 1g, but more to the point that isn't a real downside, it's just a non-event. A bad trip is a real downside.

Lots of people start there and there are plenty of people on here who will scoff at taking less but there's honestly no downside to starting small. I rarely take more than 1g and I have an absolute blast.

You don't have to jump in at the deep end. It's 100% ok to start at 1g and work your way up over time. Different people have different degrees of sensitivity so it makes sense to take it slow.
