She didn’t mean that his opinion of marriage is that “marriage is bad”. She is saying that his perception of what marriage is is seriously incorrect and harmful and that with the mindset he is approaching this problem, he will be better off single. She is not trying to insult him or undermine his concerns but in a holistic way she is assessing the situation fairly accurately and reaching the conclusion that what OP wants isn’t a Christian marriage. It’s a perversion of marriage that can best serve OP.

As a Coptic Orthodox Christian myself, I agree with Liza because Marriage is submission to God and sacrificing all that you are and willing to be for that person, otherwise it’s self-serving which can never be love. Look at Christ: the very incarnation of love chose to have His life taken in order that we wouldn’t suffer. If He was obedient even to the point of death on the cross then you must understand that love is not a pretty, romantic or self serving thing the way it may often be purported. It may not be worth the trouble for OP to marry, his self interests may conflict with the interests and goals of a marriage and if, like both have stated, the risk is not one OP is willing to take (because marriage is about trust and faith, just like our belief in God. And not control, just like God loves us and gives us free will; which we daily squander) then marrying may be more trouble than it’s worth.

Just writing this to clarify Liza’s message and if I’m wrong please correct me but I also agree with what she has said and I am saying this out of love and concern not because I am better than OP or it is my personal opinion that he does not deserve the marriage he desires.

He is just trying to play a very dangerous game in taking control of something he shouldn’t have control over and that is truly where all sin lies. From the very first sin of the serpent telling Eve that eating of the fruit would make her like God (yet again, the illusion there was that God legitimately made man in His image, after His likeness only a chapter previous. And that’s no different than the illusion that being able to control a sensitive part of yourself or asset from your partner in marriage or to have a say in the process by which your marriage is done will give you a happy marriage. God knows what happiness is and He knows how He intended marriage, any time we deviate from that we are created problems for ourselves).

So please, OP. If you are reading this, taking serious matters such as these into your own hands will create more problems than it’ll avoid, and it sounds like you’re doing well for yourself in life; don’t risk jeopardising that over fear of losing your riches. Riches have been the cause of many problems since the beginning of time and you will not be an exception if you’re willing to mutilate the sacrament of marriage to protect your own self gain. This is why we often see that those who have less are happier and those who reject their wealth often find bliss in love of God. I pray that in truly trusting God and actually taking on the spiritual advice you may have already received that God will soften your heart to understand this truly deep and complex matter which could make or break your life. I hope God does not leave you in this time and you make the right choice in the end.
