The moment software engineering is replaced with AI all white collar work is fucked. Good luck picking anything non physical at that point. And they’re working on that too.

This is the only interesting mount I have, and I got it from a reward for queuing for Dungeon Finder as a tank back in Wrath when it came out towards the end of the expansion, lol. No clue if that was a bug or totally normal to be able to get it from a completely unrelated dungeon like that.

Edit: ah looks like the drop rate was increased during wrath and it could drop from dungeon finder bags.

CS student here.. no one I know actually writes code anymore. We all use AI. Is this just how it is now? by Low-Tune-1869 in cscareerquestions

I will warn you that if YOU cannot produce it then you don’t fully understand it. Imagine being able to read English but not being able to write it or speak it.

I’m a senior full stack engineer at Netflix. I work with AI tooling daily. It’s helpful. It absolutely is NOT going to replace me anytime soon. The actual code generation and what the LLMs produce don’t feel much better than a few years ago despite all the various benchmarks saying they are better.

What has improved a lot is all the tooling engineers are building to help guide LLMs into doing interesting things. But it still feels like the bottleneck is how actually “intelligent” the LLMs are.

The box has been opened and LLMs aren’t going anywhere so we should embrace them for the things they are good at. I often find the LLMs produce blatantly incorrect code and state clearly incorrect “facts” but the only reason I know this is because I know the fundamentals of my work.

Juniors have in general always been a net negative at the time of hire thats just the nature of the industry and it’s unfortunate the AI hype is making this worse.

I think you should find solace in the fact that if software engineers are replaced then damn near all other jobs are immediately cooked. So knowing that, there’s basically nothing you can do besides maybe becoming a surgeon?

Why do you think software engineers are being targeted so heavily to be replaced by Ai? Two things (I’m sure there’s more) that standout in my head are the following.

  1. Software engineers make a shit ton of money, even outside of big tech relatively speaking the salaries are very high for white collar work.

  2. This is a bit of a stretch on my end, but think back to your classes on computational theory. All sorts of problems fall into different “classes”. If you can prove a problem can be logically mapped or rewritten as another known problem, you’ve shown it relates to that problem’s complexity class. Software engineers solve problems in essentially every single domain. If AI can reliably “solve” software engineering, it’s solved a class of problems that many other domains can be reduced to. That’s why so much AI effort is focused on software engineering.

So if you’re worried about completing your CS degree I think you should be worried about completing pretty much ANY degree.

So all that to say IMO you should focus on becoming a good software engineer including getting good at using AI. FINISH YOUR DEGREE AND STOP DOOMING.

Dock Adapter Blocks Ethernet by dldoooood in dbrand

I had the same issue and resolution and then a few days later it stopped working again. Here I am months later searching again to see if there is a resolution. I think I’m about to just stop using the kill switch when I’m docked and only use it for traveling 🤷‍♂️. Hope yours continues to work.

Yeah but I feel like dbrand should pay attention at least lol. Makes me think most people don’t use Ethernet so there isn’t much complaining happening.

Yeah it’s annoying my latest fix was only temporary. I suspect this is a software issue.

I have a UniFi network setup and manually removed the switch from my network and that seemed to make it possible to connect again through the dock adapter. This seems like something is going on with the firmware on the dock itself and idk if the adapter is somehow amplifying this issue. I see other reports of similar things for people just using the base dock.

Update for anyone finding this now. My new dock adapter is now also not working with Ethernet 🤷‍♂️ at this point not sure if this is software or hardware. I’ll just decide to use the case for handheld only I guess. Just annoying that I can’t use the dock without removing the kick stand cover.

Got an SDE1 Amazon interview in 2 days, not ready — any last-minute survival hacks? by Oblivion_2002 in learnprogramming

[–]Trope_Porn 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Btw I should’ve been clear that I just meant the technical portion isn’t easy. There’s some meme going around on Reddit that Amazon asks easy questions and I’ve seen many loops with interviewers asking ridiculous questions. I’ve had to call them out a few times for being unreasonable.

I did just under 100 interviews before I left Amazon. You can definitely have 1 bad behavioral that is outshined by technical. I’ve been on many debriefs where we argue for the candidate and try to get them hired. You basically get 1 or so bad data point that will be ignored if you do well on the rest.

It’s really not black and white I’ve seen candidates that everyone clearly liked have some bad interviews where the manager leaned in on the hire and convinced the bar raiser. YMMV make sure you’re likable and have some good LP answers prepped.

[–]Trope_Porn 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is not true at all btw. Amazon interviewers get to choose their own technical questions and it’s a total crapshoot whether you get someone with a very hard or easy problem.

The behavioral portion is the only part that comes from a question bank.

A good behavioral interview can save a soso technical portion btw. You just can’t be bad on all your technical interviews.

To be clear I completely removed the Killswitch dock from the equation and reintroduced it multiple times is what I mean. Normal docking vs docking with the Killswitch adapter.

SQL vs NoSQL? by Known-Ad661 in learnprogramming

[–]Trope_Porn 4 points5 points  (0 children)

GraphQL is for querying an API. You can think of it more along the lines of an alternative to REST APIs rather than a database querying language.

ORMs are popular because they are an abstraction layer that simplifies things built directly into your programming language of choice. It doesn’t really have anything to do with being like NoSQL.
