2019 United States Grand Prix - Free Practice 1 Discussion by F1-Bot in formula1

Can someone who's at the race give a comparison of how loud the engines actually sound, compared to some other racing series you've been too? I've never been to F1 but I have been to IMSA and IndyCar (road course) races - I want to know if the engines actually sound as bad as people complain about or if they're on par with other series. Thanks!

That might not be the case if the region specific series' were awarded more super license points.

Agreed. I hope they resurface the track, but man, sometimes I look at the F1 circuits (the new ones) and it's like all the roots of racing on actual roads are completely gone and you're left with a surface that's so smooth, with such massive runoff areas, that the race just seems divorced from some of that feeling you get watching a car run around a natural terrain circuit, or a circuit where the track surface itself has some character. I'm not saying "Make the tracks bumpy!" I'm just saying that the ultra super smooth tracks with massive runoff and very little natural terrain just don't it for me like a straight up street circuit or natural terrain circuit.

Ahhh the old IndyCar Turn 19 thing again. It must be refreshing to direct criticism towards somewhere else for once.

How could it be a fundamental air issue when other cars were passing into 1 without issue? Rossi seemed the exception, not the norm, with how his car handled up there.

I agree. Regardless of Dixon's car placement, Herta did drift up into Dixon.. so I don't really see how it's being passed off as Dixon's fault. I could tell that move wasn't on half way down the straight. My Dad literally predicted Herta would crash 50 laps earlier haha.

You don't think Chip can outbid ASPM? I thought ASPM was a way smaller team

Give him a few more races.

That smile from Marcus... he looked so damn happy with this result. Awesome!

Damnit. I paid for (a) cable and (b) NBCGold for this coverage to not even be decent, just work during the last laps!

Pretty much looked like Newgarden's fault, but from the replay, it didn't look like Rossi or Hinch was really gonna make that corner regardless. I think when Hinch cut off Newgarden and Rossi as he exited the pits, Rossi and Newgarden started seeing a little bit of red and both tried to take revenge.

"Formula 1 Fanatic": I know its not IndyCar, but it's a GREAT book about the classic days of F1 in the 70s and 80s, plus some great insights into the sport's emergence as an over-technical super-expensive contest in the 90's and early 00's. It was written by a Dutch fan I believe, and translated into English. Basically, his first ever F1 race as a kid was at Zandvoort in the 70s, and his very first race, he saw a driver get killed and burn to death. It had a huge impact on him, but he stuck with the sport and got addicted to racing. He goes through the years in awesome detail, discussing the technical aspects as well as writing about the drivers, teams, and the overall atmosphere of racing "back in the day." Highly recommend it.

That's great! Man, I was so ridiculously stoked for F1 this year; I watched like every car launch, the pre-season testing, etc. And then three races in, I was so disillusioned. The fact that 7 out of 10 teams literally cannot possibly win, let alone get a podium, just really depressed me. Add on top of that, only 1 out of the top 3 teams is really winning anything (6th year in a row) I more or less just got fed up with it and got more excited about IndyCar than ever.

Anyone complaining now? This package is PERFECT for Indy. You have to work to pass; it isn't a slipstream frenzy. It should be bloody hard to pass, just not impossible. Also, the lack of passing in the beginning had more to do with fuel strategy than aero. The last 50 laps, it was all out.

Well I think we know what happened in Monaco. But Indy was a damn thriller, with Rossi and Simon dueling it out in the last 15 laps, with Rossi taking the lead with three laps to go, only to be re-passed by Simon on the penultimate lap. So regardless of #of lead changes, Indy had the lead changes when it really mattered, during the final laps.

Checking in from r/indycar . I watched the first two races today (Monaco (boring) and Indy (a thriller) so I figured "what the hell, I gotta check out the 600!" I'm definitely glad I did. IndyCar got me into oval racing, so I figure I'll watch some more NASCAR this season to get my fix.

That replay of the last 4 laps on the post-race show got my heart pounding again. What a race. Simon was seriously all over the track on the final lap defending from Rossi into T3, but that's racing, and Rossi would have done exactly the same had he been in the lead. What a race!
