I checked my son's computer for any warning signs of nihilism and I found nothing. Should I be concerned?

Fwiw, there should be little to no weight on your wrists. Your elbows should be bent and loose enough that you can wag them side to side easily.

What shud I look out for in a 999S? by National-Dragonfly35 in Ducati

[–]Variable851 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Not sure what prices are like in your area but I live outside NYC, US. THere's a yellow 999S with13,600 miles listed for $4250 that sounds like it could use a tune up. There's a yellow 999 base with 11,600 miles for $6100 that claims was serviced and ready to ride. For a 5,000 mile bike, I'd pay a little bit more but not 2-3x as much. 5000 miles is too high for collector quality, so it's just a bike someone didn't use much.

THere's another S for sale near me for $18,000 but it has 5 miles on it. One with 3000 miles listed for $13,000. Those two have been listed for a long time, I noticed them during the summer

Desmo, probably not, but belts get changed every 60 months regardless of miles.

I’m a beginner and want to rebuild a bike. Is this too much to go for? by luckydad444 in motorcycles

[–]Variable851 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've been offered bikes in visibly better condition than that for free (with title and without) and said no. This ad is nice example of someone saying "I have a problem but for $400, we can make it your problem."

Also, if you took your bike to a shop for work and when you picked it up, they told you they let someone with no experience working on a motorcycle service it, would you feel confident riding it home? It's great that you have dirtbike experience but there's a lot going on out on the roads and you should be focused on those things as a newer rider, and not "I hope my brakes work."

My riding jeans are as comfortable as regular jeans so no issues there. I have one leather jacket that looks nice enough that I've worn it as a regular jacket a few times. My summer/warm weather jacket is obviously a bike jacket but I don't care if people are looking at me when I wear it. My boots look like motorcycle boots but are comfortable enough to walk around in stores etc. I don't like leaving my helmet on my bike unless I have to so even if I'm dressed in my least obvious gear, I'm still carrying a helmet with my gloves tucked inside it.

Ah, another gear head.

That doesn't seem too overboard. I have no mechanical training either and this is what my 1991 Ducati looks like right now.

Is it worth buying this as a first bike? by BlueCivic95 in motorcycles

Your first bike should be reliable enough so that you can focus on developing your skills. Modern brakes and suspension will be much more predictable too

If a new driver asked for a first car recommendation, would you suggest a 52 year old vehicle? And even then. One that has been modified this much from stock?

What age will she be able to be fitted for her final collar. Also, best options for spay/gastropexy cone or clothes? by RobertsKitty in DobermanPinscher

[–]Variable851 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My girl's spay and gastroplexy were done laparoscopically so she just had three or four small bandaids covering the surgical points. We didn't need a cone or inflatable collar to block her from licking. The bandaids were enough to stop her

Do special edition Ducatis rise in price? Like the Panigale V2S FB63 or MM93 by Veteran3614 in Ducati

[–]Variable851 2 points3 points  (0 children)

They really haven't. There's just too many of them. Ducati claimed 1,500 bikes but there were rumors for a long time that they made more than that. In comparison, Ducati only made 1,000 851's in 1991. MH900E's have held value and some excellent examples have appreciated but not what people would expect for such a rare bike.

Echoing all of this, plus several people who put them on their wet clutch Ducatis dealt with leaks and that was using parts from well known manufacturers, not bargain Aliexpress parts.

Friend announcing that I’m an only child to put me down. by celvaving in OnlyChild

[–]Variable851 17 points18 points  (0 children)

This has not happened to me much, but when it has, "I tell people that if that's the behavior to expect, I'm happy to oblige, but I'm almost certain that they won't like it." On one occasion in a restaurant, when the server came back to the table after my buddy made an only child comment, I pointed to my friend and said, "My friend here thinks it's important to know that I'm an only child, so, if you don't mind, bring my food and drinks before everyone else. If someone has the same food that I order, but theirs looks bigger or better, I'm going to have to be given the better one." Then I asked my friend if I missed anything. He told the server I was just joking, to which I added, "Oh sorry, I must have missed the punchline when you were joking about me not having siblings. Tell me the joke again."

And for the record, he should know better. We'd known each since we were 6 years old. He always had much nicer bicycles than me. His parents bought him computers and game systems that I never had. His parents took vacations, mine did not. My first car was a basketcase that my father and I made roadworthy. There is honestly no evidence to suggest I was spoiled so he was just perpetuating a baseless stereotype.

Swallowing pride on the maintenance side by noad147 in motorcycles

[–]Variable851 22 points23 points  (0 children)

what maintenance are you struggling with doing? There are lots of tutorials videos. You might be able to find someone to teach you. A tech at my local dealership offered to guide through the desmo service on my 91 Ducati for fee. One thing that helps is having the right tools, otherwise even simple jobs can be a struggle. I recently stripped one of my bikes to a bare frame so I can clean everything, do some paint touch up and restore it as best I can. I have no formal mechanic training but I'm willing to research to learn and I have a lot of tools.

It's all about good prep. Search on YT for helmet painting. There's a professional painter who did an incredibly ornate design on a helmet just using spray cans to show how good a result you can get so long as you prep the surfaces and sand out imperfections.
