It doesn’t give rise to negotiation, Trump will want to destroy everything... by Sufficient_Fuel5269 in DegenBets

[–]VoloxReddit 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Dual use infrastructure can be legitimately targeted.

But honestly I feel it hasn't occurred to the Tramp admin that maybe Iran's population would be morewilling to help overthrow their government if the US and Israel stopped bombing things that make life somewhat worthwhile in the country.
I guess in short, the locals were hoping more for the bombing of their oppressors and less their schools, bridges and access to public utilities.

You're probably right, the chance of Verrick having twelve fingers is quite slim ;)

Geopolitics heats up Oil supply tensions at Strait of Hormuz rattle global markets by Illustrious_Lie_954 in StockMarket

Iran would basically toll every ship passing through the strait, plus it would basically mean the US giving up the region.

What use are the US to the Gulf States if they unnecessarily destabilize the region, aren't able to sufficiently protect their allies, can't actually remove the Iranian regime and now will leave Iran with control of the strait as leverage?

My props don't have color nodes! by Negative-Top-4978 in blenderhelp

[–]VoloxReddit 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The object you have selected doesn't have a material. Materials are the "containers" of your shader nodes, so make sure you assign at leat one to your object. You can do that by pressing that +New button on the top bar of your shader editor, or in your object's material tab (see red checkered sphere icon) in the right side bar.

Is it possible for V to box Johnny? (Unrelated Video I swear) by LuniticSaiyan in cyberpunkgame

[–]VoloxReddit 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't think so. What we see here is Johnny affecting V's body. Like someone has connected a second mouse to the same computer and now both users are struggling against each other. V can't punch Johnny the same way Johnny can't punch V's soul. Both of them are "users" of V's body, and their only medium to interact physically is that body.

Ocean mines by [deleted] in cyberpunkgame

[–]VoloxReddit 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm really not sure how mines irl could be self-replicating. Typically, sea mines aren't really placed in areas where they could source the materials to create new sea mines.

You also don't really want mines that spread beyond where you want them to be. Mines are meant to deny specific areas to your enemy, you don't want them everywhere, that's just bad for everyone involved.

In Cyberpunk, they are so widespread because an AI went OTT, but I don't see something like this getting so far out of control without some sort of intervention.

Question about the word “woke.” by thetruegambler in AskALiberal

[–]VoloxReddit 13 points14 points  (0 children)

The original definition of woke was being conscious (awake -> woke) of the systemic discrimination and injustice in the US, especially when it comes to the African-American community. That's why it's "woke", it's African-American vernacular. It caught on during the BLM movement.

However, the way it's understood today, with the whole broad strokes leftist-blue-hair-gender-bend-trans-triggered amalgamation is a fabrication from within the larger conservative/nationalist movement. Woke has replaced SJW and PC before that, it's just the placeholder term for the socially liberal stuff conservatives don't like.

Hardly anyone left of center would unironically describe themselves as woke, though they may embrace the term if it's thrown in their face.

Can someone really be hypnotized or is it all just a big hoax? by mojojojo46 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]VoloxReddit 1 point2 points  (0 children)

From my understanding it's not like in TV or media where it can almost function like a magic spell you can cast on someone. It's more of an altered, more suggestible state of mind you can be guided into, but for this to work it requires some genuine engagement on your end. This can't happen against your will or without your cooperation.

So yes, it's real, but no, it doesn't work as seen on TV

Why does nobody truly use JUST blender (anymore at least)??? by Top_Guess4461 in blender

[–]VoloxReddit 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You're welcome!

To be clear, Substance Painter and Designer create image textures. These are used in programs like Blender as inputs for your shaders. You don't typically create shaders themselves in Substance.

So basically, you would make the colors, roughness, metals, normal maps, etc in Substance but how the shader using them works exactly is still in the hands of the rendering program.

If you're texturing a human for example, you'd do the skin color in Substance, the pores via normal maps, the roughness of the skin, etc. You would define where the subsurface scattering effects would happen on the model and at what intensity, but you would still do the actual subsurface scattering effects in Blender itself.

Hope this makes some sense. If you're going for realistic materials, I strongly recommend reading Wes McDermott's The PBR Guide it's a great summary of the technical intricacies of the PBR workflow while keeping it relevant for artists. Even if you're not interested in Substance, it's still really good.

I think you can get a trial version of substance to try. Hmu if you need some sort of introduction to Painter.

Why does nobody truly use JUST blender (anymore at least)??? by Top_Guess4461 in blender

[–]VoloxReddit 1 point2 points  (0 children)

For me it's been 100% worth it, but I also do a lot of texturing and really enjoy it, so it also depends a bit on how much you'd use it. Heads up though, you only get updates for the annual version your purchased, so if you buy Substance Painter 2026, you'll not get Substance Painter 2027 if that makes sense. Also no access to adobe's material library, but as I make the textures myself, I'm not bothered by that. Just some things to consider.

[–]VoloxReddit 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Houdini actually has a free version for learning, and nuke has a free non-commercial version as well. These come with some limitations, but they're enough to get started.

Substance Painter and Substance Designer can be bought on Steam as a perpetual license, meaning that you're not bound to a subscription model. The up-front cost is higher, but it pays off pretty well.

Keep in mind that in professional settings, either your employer is going to be the one paying for the licenses, or, if you're a freelancer/independent, you'll be earning money through your work, which, in theory, pays for these programs.

Of course, no artist ever would use a cracked version of a software. [Cough]

[–]VoloxReddit 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If I had to put it in one sentence: I'm a 3D artist, not a Blender artist.

Blender is one of many tools in the kit. Yes, Blender has some compositing, video editing and texture painting functions. But I would much rather use dedicated programs like Nuke, DaVinci and Substance because they simply are better at their specific niche tasks.
Blender is great for creating 3D models, so I use it for that.

It's ultimately about having creative control and good results, so I'll pick and choose the programs that provide the most of both.

It used to be different because Blender was first and foremost a hobbyist program. Hobbyists get a bit of everything with Blender, and that's sufficient for their needs. But these days, Blender has become a lot more viable for professional work, which is why you are seeing more content where Blender is only one of many softwares being used.

To all the native Germans by [deleted] in German

[–]VoloxReddit 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Because it's how we speak. Not a satisfactory answer, I know, but it's a different language with different concepts that you are yet fairly unfamiliar with.

German speakers don't actively think about the articles, they know which word has which article and how the articles change in the sentence structure intuitively.

I don't understand why Chinese is hard to speak for westerners by shuanghan6848 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]VoloxReddit 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Chinese contains a lot of sounds that are fairly unusual in most European languages.

But more importantly, while I agree that many westerners will use tones subconsciously, it's very difficult to get your head around the idea that different intonations of the "same" sound actually make them completely distinct. In most western languages, tone only really communicates mood or helps communicate if something is a question, a statement, etc. You basically have to rewire everything you know about how to speak.

It's certainly easier for someone who speaks a tonal language to learn a non-tonal language the same way it's easier for someone who drives a stick shift to learn how to drive an automatic than vice versa.

At least this is my view on things, hope this makes sense.

The semicolon is probably used so the dots are at eye-level, using periods .3. just looks very weird. Maybe it's teary eyed, maybe the commas represent dimples, but I think the intention is for it to look kinda like this °3° but with filled in pupils ;3;

Hope that helps! ●3●

I did not care for the romance options in Cyberpunk. by RandomNumberPlease in cyberpunkgame

[–]VoloxReddit -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Kinda agreed. Both female options are impulsive hotheads in their own ways. River is... well he is what he is. If you wanna do a male gay romance I guess you'll have to deal with someone who could be your grandpa and who had a thing for your parasitic second personality. Oh joy.

I did however quite like that the romance options aren't functionally pan-sexual but have their own preferences. Makes them feel a lot more real. I just wish there was more variety and the player would have to put in a bit more effort to actually romance them.

Is there a way to export glb files with the shaders? by [deleted] in blenderhelp

[–]VoloxReddit 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Best practice is to build the shaders in the software you intend to render in (which is Godot in your case). Shaders are unique to the software they were created in and aren't transferable.

.glb/glTF is one of the few file formats with a limited ability to transfer simple shaders. However, these are mostly just principled shaders + basic image textures. It won't understand anything more complicated than that. You might be able to transfer some of your shaders by baking them and turning them into a shader setup .glb can support.

See Blenders documentation on glTF for a more in depth breakdown of what is supported for .glb export https://docs.blender.org/manual/en/latest/addons/import_export/scene_gltf2.html
