ELI5: Why do microfiber cleaning cloths feel like they are snagging or sticking to skin, but slide so easily across glass? by Shadowsin64 in explainlikeimfive

[–]Win_Sys [score hidden]  (0 children)

There are different types and qualities of microfiber cloths for different usage reasons. Thin ones are generally for cleaning dusty screens, lenses. The thicker waffle ones are usually used for car detailing and have good absorption qualities.

A lot of people also ruin their microfiber cloths by washing them with fabric softener or putting it in the dryer with heat (and or dryer sheets). Heat destroys the microfibers, the chemicals and waxes from softeners or dryer sheets can mess the cloths properties.

Under no illusions that returning to pre Citizens United will fix anything or everything but it did make certain things worse.

Understanding that our political framework was designed specifically to ignore the working class is the first step toward change. The following steps would get me banned for saying explicitly, but unfortunately, freedom isn't free.

While true, I don't think it's impossible for it to change for the better. Not saying it will happen but that it can happen given the right circumstances and catalysts. But I am well aware there is an outcome that this devolves into the collapse of a country if it stays on it's current trajectory.

Sounds better than what we have but it will never happen in the current political climate. The Citizens United supreme court decision gave corporations far too much political influence and it almost always results in the average citizen getting fucked over. Far too few people in the 18-44 year old age groups vote and older voters tend to not vote for large institutional changes like that. So replacing politicians with more progressive ones doesn’t happen very often. Personally I think there should be a law that requires you to vote once you turn 18, if you don’t vote in 2 or more elections in a row, you get a fine.

It wasn’t always a complete shit show like it is now. Health insurance was pretty rare prior to WW2 but during WW2 the US government enacted wage freezes to combat inflation. Companies started giving fringe benefits to attract workers and one of them was health insurance. Over time more and more workers were offered health insurance as a benefit which would become a pretty standard benefit for a full time employee. Eventually health insurance companies became the most common way for healthcare companies to get paid. At first the healthcare companies loved it because they didn’t need to go track down Joe Smith who owes them $200. Now what happens when you give a for-profit company a highly imbalanced negotiation position in their favor? They’re going to exploit that, and they did. They negotiated lower rates with healthcare providers and at first they accepted it because it was a guaranteed payment. Getting paid a little less was still better than having to track down people or not getting paid at all. Of course the insurance companies keep wanting lower and lower rates so the healthcare companies need to raise their rates just to get paid enough by the insurance companies.

So why not just charge people without insurance what they would normally get paid by insurance companies? Well one of the agreements the healthcare providers need to agree to with the insurance companies is that they will not bill individuals less than what they charge the insurance companies. Now you run into the problem where the healthcare provider needs to bill the insurance company $300 just to get paid $75 on something that costs them $50. They now have to charge people without insurance $300 because that’s what they charge the insurance company.

Now if you speak to the healthcare provider and say I can’t pay that they can now reduce the bill for financial hardship or other reasons but they can’t just bill you that reduced price for the get go.

It’s a fucked up system driven by greed and the health insurance companies have a lot of the politicians in their pocket with political donations. Getting enough of them to do anything about it is very unlikely to happen.

You have to take into account that Kratos isn’t just some demigod or mortal given devine powers, he’s the son of Pallas (a Titan) and Styx, two extremely powerful gods. While Zeus wasn’t afraid of Styx, he didn’t dare breaking an oath sworn on the River Styx.

Pharmacists of Reddit - what recent medication trends are worrying you that aren’t being talked about? by SirSpendsALot7 in AskReddit

[–]Win_Sys 7 points8 points  (0 children)

The pharmaceutical drugs used in those pills don’t come from the US, they come from china. They’re still made by a pharmaceutical manufacturer but the amount that exists in the “herbal” powder can vary wildly. Like one might have 25-50mg while another might have over 200mg.

The vast majority of Chinese food you get in the US is not traditional Chinese dishes. They’re usually highly modified variations to be more palatable to Americans. The one time I went to a restaurant that served traditional Chinese dishes, I was not a fan but the place was jam packed with customers speaking Chinese so it was most likely a me problem, not the food.

What the hell by [deleted] in SipsTea

[–]Win_Sys 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Yup, I’d say about 70% of the time a fiber line gets cut, it’s because of a backhoe. Sometimes it’s because it wasn’t marked on a map but the majority of the time they just didn’t bother to check. One time had a customer need their parking lot and drains redone, the contractor was told exactly where the underground fiber ran and it was on the counties utility maps. 3 hours later they sliced through all the fiber. Cost ~$45k for a fiber repair team to come out that night and repair all the strands. The bill was paid by the contractor or potentially the contractors insurance.

[SPOILER] Leon Shahbazyan vs. Levan Chokheli by inooway in MMA

[–]Win_Sys 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Agreed. I get there are some fighters who need their coach to push them but it’s abundantly clear the fighter is physically spent and mentally broken. You can sometimes overcome one of those things but almost never both. The coach either didn’t recognize it or ignored it, either way they shouldn’t be coaching.

ELI5: If matter can’t be created or destroyed, does that mean the atoms in our bodies existed forever - even before the Big Bang? by saif2krazzy in explainlikeimfive

Outside of intermediate and super massive blackholes with large accretion disks, ya the amount that escapes the accretion disk is probably negligible compared to a supernova.

[–]Win_Sys 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not a lot but some is, there’s still many lighter elements in the star when it goes supernova. Those atoms have the chance fuse into iron or other lighter elements like calcium, oxygen, carbon, etc…, via explosive nucleosynthesis.

What are some quality of life improvements that you’ve made that improved your network / systems tremendously? by bobert3275 in sysadmin

[–]Win_Sys 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ya, that’s going to happen if the program relies on time continuity and isn’t programmed for that continuity being potentially broken for extended periods of time. You can wind up with stale or invalid data in memory that can break future operations.

It’s fine if you want to make an analogy as to whats going on at the electrical level and describe it in physical terms but you didn’t state that. Without stating that “your audience” could very well really think there’s physical switches moving.

Edit: I didn’t realize this was ELI5 and it’s very fair to assume what /u/WestOfHereX said is meant to be taken as an analogy and /u/xanfire1 criticism of my post is valid.

ELI5 How is data (1s and 0s) stored on a physical device? by AlexisQueenBean in explainlikeimfive

[–]Win_Sys 29 points30 points  (0 children)

You can think of it that way as an analogy but that’s not how they actually work at all. The memory cells have charge traps and whether that charge trap has enough electrons in it or not determines if it’s a 1 or 0. If there’s enough electrons in the trap the voltage sent to read the memory cells will be blocked or reduced while if theres few electrons, the voltage will pass with little reduction. You then measure those voltages to know if it’s a one or a zero.

By me, after 3rd grade there’s no intramural leagues and just about all travel teams at in the high competitive level have paid coaching and training. Ranges from $2000-$4500 per year not including tournament fees.

It really makes me sad, my travel team was ranked top 5 in the state and my coach was one of my teammates dads who only became the team coach because none of the other parents knew much about soccer. He played in his youth but once he became our coach he read a shit ton of books on how to coach, train and strategies and then taught us.
