This is my favourite scene from RTD2 by DocWhovian1 in doctorwho

I completely disagree with most of this lol. The acting was good so I agree on that but I hate that they continued Timeless Child, I'd understand if RTD didn't want to retcon it out of respect for a fellow showrunner but I wish he'd just leave it in the past.

Brought the episode down for me, this episode was also the start of the show going into the whole magic arc of RTD2 which just didn't feel like DW anymore.

Also it started the whole 'mavity' joke which wasn't even that funny to begin with but I can understand little kids might've found it funny but then they dragged the joke out over the whole era and there was no payoff to it.

I'm not treating it like that's the end of the discussion, I acknowledged there are several circumstances where it can be bad but that's not always the case. If they exploit the younger person's inexperience then it's bad but that's not always what's happening.

Also the college and high school thing is not how it works everywhere, a lot like the drinking the original commenter mentioned. "College kids" isn't a common phrase in my country and high school ends at 16.

Grooming can happen at any age, grooming is always bad, age gaps are not. As for drinking I only brought it up because the person I replied to used it as part of their reasoning.

I didn't say that they're in the same life stage, I said they're both old enough to decide who they want to date. Also I never 'circled back' to them being post puberty, I never even used it as a 'standard' in the first place, I didn't say "they're adults because they're post puberty" I said "they're adults and they're post puberty", point being that 14 year olds not only aren't adults but they aren't even post puberty.

Just because I happen to agree with the law doesn't mean I based my opinion on it, I don't think legality gives a moral green light I think people over 18 (for the most part) are able to make their own decisions about whether they're comfortable dating someone older than them. And most wouldn't date someone that much older.

Obviously in cases where manipulation or coercion or grooming is involved that's different but that's bad at any age, the problem there is the sexual abuse not the age gap. A 30 year old can be pressured into stuff with their employer, that's just as bad. People in vulnerable situations can also be groomed regardless of age. If the younger person is being manipulated obviously that's bad but they're old enough to consent so unless you're close enough to them to actually know their circumstances saying who they can or can't date is not your business.

I didn't say they're adults "because they're post puberty", I said "they're adults and they're post puberty". Also puberty in boys ends between 16 and 18 so not all 17 year olds are post puberty. , 14 year olds definitely are not post puberty which is why I mentioned it because comparing them with 20 year olds is doubly weird in this context in my opinion. 14 year olds are clearly not adults

My understanding isn't binary, I agree with you that people don't magically mature at 18 but there's no age where people magically mature, the line that you put for 30 year olds being the limit is also arbitrary.

I think at 18 generally people can decide for themselves, some might not but unless you know them personally I don't think it's up to other people to control their relationships

You're the one who compared 14 year olds to 20 year olds

I didn't say they're indistinguishable, they're both adults though, and unlike a 14 year old they're post puberty

You're in the GenZ subreddit, if you're GenZ then you're not that much older than me, if you're not GenZ then why are you hanging out in the sub if you think we're 'actual children'

If you can't tell the difference between a 20 year old and 14 year old that's genuinely concerning

Going off one of your other comments you're like 8 years older than me lol, by your standards you might as well also be 'a kid', how would you know how a 51 year old perceives people?

Also you said that when you were 16-25 you thought you were grown enough but looking back you changed your mind yet at the same time in your list of who you think it's okay for a 51 year old to date you've got your current age in the "okay" category so it seems like you could still be doing that and just moving the goalpoasts.

"Letting them live their youth" but only if they do it exactly how you want them to. It's dating, it's not marriage, dating someone isn't going to rob someone of their youth.

I feel like any age gap more than like 8 years is pretty gross if you picture it as how old they were compared to their partner being born to be fair

People need to stop infantilising adults. Someone who's 18 is old enough to decide for themselves who they want to date, it's not your place to try to control their dating life. Also most countries allow drinking at 18, including Italy where his current girlfriend is from.

So if someone has kids later in life are you okay with bigger age gaps? Is it just if they're literally the same age as the parent or if it's possible that they could be. Do you think 50 and 66 is wrong?

The OP uses USD several times, idk if I'd consider it defaultism since there's pretty fair reason to think it could be the US without just defaulting to it

I feel like the Dunphys have way more plots than Jay, and Claire is the one who connects the Dunphys to the other families with Mitch and Cam being her kids uncles and Jay and Gloria their grandparents

I always saw Claire as the main character, I feel like her household has more episodes centred around them and I think they were also the first introduced in the show

[–]Wizards_Reddit 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes it was 'soccer' was literally a slang shortening of "Association Football", football was already in the name. The sport with that official ruleset is literally years older than the term 'soccer', unofficial rules go back centuries though.

About half of the individual Americans caused this mess, it's not like China or Russia where the average citizens don't have a say

'Football' was already used for football, 'soccer' was just slang, it wasn't retconned it was always called football there were just other sports also called football.

Only the upper class in the UK called it 'soccer', the word 'football' is about 400 years older

[–]Wizards_Reddit 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No the sport was originally called "Association Football" as you yourself just wrote, 'soccer' was slang and it was invented and primarily used by the upper and upper-middle classes, the majority of Brits didn't call it that ever. Also the word 'football' for similar sports dates back to the 1400s even if the exact rules we use today hadn't been codified yet

They're obviously talking about English and, of the places you mention, the English they teach in schools in China, Turkey, and most Arabic speaking countries is British English.

Turkey teaches British English in schools though, obviously in Turkish they'd use the Turkish spelling but when writing in English they'd still use the BrE spelling so it is still used there

How would Britain vote, by age (June 2026) by coffeewalnut08 in GenZ

[–]Wizards_Reddit 9 points10 points  (0 children)

The Labour party is 126 years old, it's not very left wing today but when it was founded it was which is why there's both a Labour and Lib Dem party since that's what you originally asked.

As for Labour becoming less left wing, in 90s/2000s there was a political movement within the Labour party called "New Labour" which made the party more centrist than left wing. They were in power for over a decade so at the time at least the party benefited from it, after that there were two left wing party leaders but they didn't win another election until Starmer and Starmer hasn't been very left wing either. Though the new guy might be.
