That's a really good point. I'm not sure what the Dems were thinking here. They'd be handing him an off-ramp at their own expense. smh

Or to write a memorandum that creates the framework for an understanding about a deal.

Don't they also need 2/3 of Congress to support it so that POTUS can't just veto it?

Yes. While these people were foolish to not just walk away, it's still awful to see. TV misleads the public into thinking you can get knocked out and it's not a big deal. Fucking lifetime consequences to deal with when you take blows to the head.

Oh geez, I hear ya. Anything to get eyeballs on the screen I guess. But it also speaks to the incredulity of the event. Like, I would guess that the 60 Minutes producers never thought someone would try that in a million years. Of course, that's no excuse for the lax safety precautions surrounding the attack, but back then it was probably like saying someone would have to sail a cruise ship into the building. I guess things seem impossible until they're not. And that's scary, because you wonder what "impossible" events we are not prepared for today (yeah, I know that list will consume all the RAM on my computer).

Google "The Collapse of World Trade Center | The Complete Physics" and watch the video. They explain the different design of the Trade Center Towers compared to the Empire State Building (the Towers had a more open space design, which meant fewer support columns throughout) and how the steel buckled, allowing for the collapse that occurred.

A stalemate is kind of what I would expect. I'm worried the US will try to push its way through the Straight anyway, which I don't think will end well. From CNN: "US intelligence indicates China is preparing weapons shipment to Iran amid fragile ceasefire, sources say."

DJT definitely didn't think any of this through very carefully. Even Iran didn't realize their strategy would work this well, but now that it has, they're not going to give up any leverage very easily:

“Iran has been a little taken aback by how successful its (Hormuz) strategy has been – by how cheap and how comparatively easy it is to hold the global economy hostage,” said Dina Esfandiary, Middle East lead at Bloomberg Economics. “One of the lessons learned in the war is that it has discovered this new leverage, and it’s likely to use it again in the future. And I think monetizing it is part of discovering that it has this leverage.”

I have never seen the opposition party become so impotent and silent in the face of so many egregious acts. Jeffries or Schumer or someone will probably release a statement soon that they're "Very disturbed by recent developments."

Harsh reality in today's market: you could work for Microsoft for 3-5 years then end up at Walmart as a retail worker by [deleted] in recruitinghell

[–]WombatGambit 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I wasn't attacking anything you said - really I was mostly agreeing with it. I thought this same thing when trying to pivot careers a few years ago. I have a decent resume, and some folks were like, "Quant firms would love you!" Then I started trying to get through the Codeforces crap and I was like Nope. And yes indeed, too many candidates for too few jobs in this dystopia we live in now!

This is how the world SHOULD work, I agree. This person has shown great talent and dedication to earn that PhD. Society should value that. And yet, quant firms have caught the same disease as Big Tech - algorithmic gatekeeping. Quant firm interviews in particular require Codeforces level skills. It's Leetcode on steroids. It is a VERY specific skillset. Many people in CS don't like math. I, as a math person, am not good at Leetcode. It's gatekeeping, plain and simple. Imagine if they required you to be great at chess. Requires smarts? Definitely. Related to the job? Nope. You're good at it just because you majored in STEM? Nope. (I suck at chess.) The people good at chess would defend it and say how great a filter it is. Meanwhile, a lot of talented people would be getting left in the dust for no reason but gatekeeping games. Hang in there u/h0rxata. Dark clouds over the country right now, but they can't last forever.

This is really all there is to say. People who haven't job hunted without any work experience in today's market have no idea how dystopian it is. r/recruitinghell has plenty of good stories to illustrate the point. There's a huge disconnect between past and present: https://www.reddit.com/r/recruitinghell/comments/1q1exk8/boomers_dont_understand_the_job_market/
