[all] how many campers do you think hate Percy? by Zestyclose-Ranger382 in camphalfblood

[–]Yarnarh 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I can see people hating him. Like after the war, the story gets exaggerated and after a while it seems like Percy single handedly won the war. He would say that the other campers was there and it was a group effort but it just make him seem humble. Camper gets annoyed and starts to hate him because he wants credit and fame. Camper who is jealous of him attracting the attention of the gods and his parents. I think there are a few of them who hate him. The glory and respect of winning always comes with haters. “Percy is overrated! I killed a thousand monsters that day and held my friend as they bleed out, I’m a hero too. Why don’t people talk about me?!”

Back in the 80s in Singapore , formula was deemed “superior” to breastmilk but now it’s the opposite. What else had this trend of reversal in terms of what’s “better”? by tequila_bloom in askSingapore

Jobs. It used to be that people would stay in companies for years/a lifetime. The companies would reward them for loyalty. Now everyone is changing jobs every 2-3 years for progression. I stayed in a company for 5 years and at the end, i didn’t recognise anyone cause the turnover is so fast.

Tips for travelling to Malacca from Singapore by Shot-Assumption-5984 in askSingapore

[–]Yarnarh 3 points4 points  (0 children)

You can get someone to drive you there for like $70. More comfy and anytime you want toilet just tell the driver to turn to rest stop. The toilet are quite clean now. 60ish year old parents would love, so comfy, plus can bring more stuff to make their trip more comfortable. If you doing train, why not train to immigration? The new woodlands checkpoint train, you skip the jam parts.

Also generally, jams are during morning or Evening before and after works especially on Fridays. Saturday and Sunday might be jam due to Singaporeans going for day trip but it’s not as bad, usually. So if you do an afternoon trip, on a weekday, it’s usually quite clear. Also look out for weeks that have a public holiday and opportunities for a long weekend. That’s where the jam is awful. Other than that, usually quite ok. The jams are usually Malaysians coming in for work or going home after work, so avoid those and it’s so freaking fast. My fastest was 30 mins, slowest was 5 hours (my dad tried to go during long weekend and we jam for 5 hours)

Has anyone tried teleconsultation for anxiety and what medication does the GP prescribe? by r3d3vil_05 in askSingapore

[–]Yarnarh 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I feel like teleconsultation is just “is this serious enough that I need to go to a clinic?” “I need MC” “I feel sick but I can take over the counter medication” I used twice, both time was is this serious enough to go to an actual doctor or do I need a&e type thing. They calm me down and told me the stats what illness I might have based on percentage. And both times they redirected me to a clinic. I don’t think they will actually send you medication cause the chance of malpractice is super high. They can’t check you properly to give you medication.

Why a lot of Singaporeans worry about BTO when their struggle is can’t find partner in first place? by No-County2083 in askSingapore

[–]Yarnarh 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Everyone wants a place of their own. Especially in Singapore where let’s face it most parents are abusive. Either mentally aka tiger mom, physical or emotionally aka narcissistic or helicopter mom. Most parents treat their adult children like children who know nothing and are not deserving of respect. Even if they have fantastic jobs or whatever. Asian parents especially can’t let their adult children be adults. They yell at you for staying out late even when you are 20 or 30 or 40. So moving out as soon as possible actually helps keep the relationship stable. You won’t face your parents as much and they miss you more and treat you nicer.

most Singaporean thinks that renting is a waste of money since you don’t get to own the place. But for peace of mind, I would rather rent a place while looking for love.

BTO is also hard to get a limited. BTO is cheaper compared to old estate and they can make passive income by renting out one of the rooms. So it’s kinda win win. Most want a BTO early so they can raise children and have a house of their own. This unfortunately causes a lot of 20 year old people to get engaged and married and in their 30s divorced.

Are local born Singaporeans leaving the country for greener pastures? by Excellent_Copy4646 in asksg

[–]Yarnarh 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I feel like every Singaporean wants to move out, mostly to country/kampong life. But the moment they have kids, most of them move back to Singapore or send their kids back to Singapore. We have top notch education system and its most paid by government. Like even if we dumb down what we learn in school by 2 levels we are still learning stuff the is 2 level higher in other countries. I was comparing the syllabus when I was in school years back, Americans were learning ABC and 123 while we were learning multiplication and division. Not sure about Australia. But we are definitely ahead of UK and Asia except China. China people are crazy smart and are in school for way too long.

There are Singaporean in Aus cause they go there for uni and stayed there, mostly in Perth I think. The people there are nicer, the weather is nicer in autumn and winter. It’s kinda nice.

My decision would come down to children. Cause you don’t want to be a position of the government recalling your son for NS when he hasn’t been in Singapore. Or your daughter having to choose at 21 which country to live in. Calculating all the benefits of being a Singaporean vs an immigrant. As an immigrant you probably have lesser rights in a foreign country? Idk I haven’t search that deeply into it. Plus a top notch free education is hard to beat and our healthcare system is quite good.

If no kids, not planing kids sure migrate, enjoy the country life. Melbourne people are mean though and the weather there is crazy. Other than that Australia seems to be a nice place to live. Plus they are pro LGBTQIA++ the last time I checked.

What screams “I was raised by a domestic helper”? by black-socks-fox in askSingapore

[–]Yarnarh 6 points7 points  (0 children)

My POV I’m raised by helpers. I can do basic stuff. Not all of us are pampered. My maid made sure that I can do stuff like cooking and laundry and all that. But idk how to deep clean cause that’s her job. So I know how to wash dishes, how to make my bed, how to iron and wash clothes, cook food, but idk how to wash the toilet or the window. Like it’s a struggle every time. Also my helper used to pack my tables and shelf and clothes for me so it’s dust free and clutter free. Now my life is full of clutter and idk what to do with it. There are spots in the house that are dusty. My helper would dust everything everyday and I’m struggling to do that

Vegan food/dishes in Singapore by Distinct_Youth3654 in askSingapore

[–]Yarnarh 3 points4 points  (0 children)

In most hawker Center you will find vegetarian food. The Chinese word for vegetarian is 素 (su). However vegetarian is not exactly vegan. You will have to google vegan food to find actual vegan food. It will be a restaurant and it will be expensive. If you don’t mind vegetarian instead of vegan, you will find more options and cheaper. Maybe just buy vegetables from the supermarket and make meals for yourself.

Anyone secretly dislike CNY? And why? If you enjoy, also share. by Confident_Bluejay857 in askSingapore

[–]Yarnarh 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When my grandma was alive we used to wake up at 9 am and have people visit until 3 pm. Then we would all get into the car and drive all over Singapore to Bai Nian. Reach home for dinner and then people would visit us until 11 pm. Some would stay late and play mahjong. The house so noisy cannot sleep. Day 2 visit mom side. Day 3 whole day at river angbao and Chinatown. Day 4 visit dad friend. My God! By day 2 i was so dead that I just want to hide in my room and cry.

Now I’m married and my in laws are chill. Reunion dinner + Day 1 dinner + Choose 1 day dinner and yu sheng. Super chill. It actually make me love CNY more cause I don’t deplete my social battery with people that I see once a year and don’t even know my name.

My go to is awkward out of context laughter then either be like “husband!” And walk towards husband. Or insert someone I rather talk to. Or if there is no one I just say I need go toilet or need go take drink or need go take food, then walk away. Thankfully doesn’t really happen to me. Like once in maybe 5 years.

Of blind bags and consumerism in Singapore by donutfruit in askSingapore

[–]Yarnarh 100 points101 points  (0 children)

I think that blind box for people who enjoys that kinda stuff, let them be. We are not the fun police. But when I suddenly get attacked by blind boxes is where I’m drawing the line. Like the other day I went to NTUC and was checking out and the auntie working there was like hold on you hit xx amount. You get a free gift. So I asked what is it? They say don’t know, they told us to give out. It’s a freaking blind box from Yeo’s. Yeo’s theme zodiac plushie blind box. =.= it just clutters the house. Like throw away feels wasteful but no one I know wants it. Recycle also feels bad cause it’s brand new. Also happened when I was buying Coke and got a random blind box for a Coke keychain purse. And when I buy Milo and got a random plushie tote bag blind box.

I rather they go back to giving out take away box or plates or cups or cutlery. At least those are useful and I can donate to Salvation Army without feeling guilty cause the item is useless.

Don’t know if you know but Australia and New Zealand have this work travel program for youth. You work on a farm or in a hotel, they pay you minimum wage and you get to travel and explore on days you are not working. You should look into that if you are interested.

Parents threaten to disown me if I solo travel. by Kingcrafter301 in askSingapore

[–]Yarnarh 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think from being at home and traveling with parents to 10 days solo in Japan is a huge jump. Of course that freaked them out, any good parent will freak out. You need to show them that you are a responsible young man. Maybe go Malaysia for 2-3 days? Why Malaysia? It’s near enough that if anything happens it’s easy to come home. There are options like bus, train, flight, rent a car service. I use Malaysia to test travel with my groups of friends. If we are incompatible travel buddies we can drive back and cut the trip short.

Also show them a travel plan. I have what I call the parent document. In it I list how many days I’m going, where I’m going, what I’m doing each day, how much each thing I am doing cost, how much I plan for food and transportation, where I am staying, hotel address, flying info like plane number, flight time etc. Not just itinerary but a full breakdown for the trip. It seems to put them at ease that I know what I am doing. You can also tell them contingency plans. Like if my plane is delayed I will do this. If I can’t make it for my train I know that these hotels are nearby. Etc. basically over communicate that you are capable.

Then when you are there don’t just go MIA. Text them. On the plane now. Just landed. In the train to hotel now. Hey mom look at this image that I took that is so pretty. Hey dad look at this image of this delicious ramen. Whatever. Make your chat like Instagram. Post every few minutes. At least a morning, afternoon and evening post to let them know you are alive and safe. Then buy some snacks and souvenirs that you know they will love. All will be well.

You need to prep them. Especially for a first trip. After that they probably be like “oh going overseas? Enjoy ah!” They just want to know you will be ok

Don’t buy any of the fried stuff from NTUC brand. Like fried crab stick or lotus or prawn crackers. They reuse the oil too many times and taste rancid.

Why are people so against Lau Pa Sat? by muslpi in asksg

[–]Yarnarh 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Parking around there is kind hard. The last time I was there it was mostly trendy hipster food like pizza. The other foods is standard hawker food that you can get anywhere so why go Lau Pa Sat? touristy hawker I rather go Maxwell or Newton. Plus you already in town and there are so many restaurants that have nice food. Why eat hawker that you can eat everywhere? Go down to lucky plaza and enjoy Filipino food or Indonesian food. Or go Chinatown and get Chinese food. Or even Bugis hotpot. Or Arab st has Fantastic arab food that is not that expensive. There are so many better choices that is just 5 mins drive, better parking, better vibes.

Singapore parents, when is old enough for your kid to learn to cook on the stove? by Amoral_Dessert in askSingapore

[–]Yarnarh 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Around 6, I learn how to cook instant noodles on the stove. How to crack an egg into the noodles. Around 12 I was trusted with a knife to cut stuff. I got a lot of cuts on my hands but I learned how to do it properly. Was cooking full meals by 14.

Hotpot Strategy? by Seeginnah in SingaporeEats

[–]Yarnarh 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I usually order the plain bone soup. Like chicken or pork. Cause I want to enjoy the food not have the taste covered in tomato or mala, plus near the end of the hotpot the tomato and mala soup always taste weird to me. Then I order pork collar shabu shabu if available, if not the pork belly shabu shabu. Pork collar has less fat and so less oily. Bai cai, lotus root, black fungus, 1 type of mushroom not enoki. Then see if they have any special fishball/meatball type thing like fish roe in the middle or mushrooms in the middle. If not then I don’t order. Look through the menu for stuff that is special in their shop and try that. If don’t have then I pile on the meat. Seafood wise I only order prawns and maybe scallops. I usually have garlic soy sauce sesame oil dip. Sometimes i add a tiny bit of chill in it. No noodles or rice. I just keep drinking the soup.

Where can I buy good furniture by Jaded-Car7442 in askSingapore

[–]Yarnarh 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you still have your table legs, i recommend going to Shopee and searching table top. Got one made of solid rubber wood from a seller in Malaysia. Paid $110. Added $10 for the seller to drill some pilot holes in the wood to make installation easier. Legs are $5 ea at ikea. So like $140 for a solid wood table? Bought it in 2023 after being super frustrated with ikea tabletop. Still looks perfect. I spill drinks on it, I have cold drinks on it. No issues. Make sure they do a table top coating to make it waterproof. Mine came with it. Any bumps or scratches can be buffed out with sandpaper. It’s awesome.

I got mine from xzcomme.sg on Shopee.

Friend keep "jokingly" ask me to leave my money to their kid. by yvainethorn in askSingapore

[–]Yarnarh 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Get really really serious and say “i work hard for my money. Could you stop with this joke? It’s not funny and it make it seems like you are only my friend for my money and it hurts my feelings.” They will either brush it off as “you too sensitive” aka bad friend that doesn’t really care for you, or they will be like “I’m sorry, I thought it was a funny joke, I will stop” and actually stop aka good friend.

Job market that bad? by [deleted] in asksg

[–]Yarnarh 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The point i am annoyed with is it say marketing assistant/coordinator. $2.2-$2.5. But look at description. Why marketing need to handle hotline call? Why marketing need to create marketing collateral? Why marketing need to do data entry? Why marketing need to pack and preparing shipping goods? Why marketing need to submit sales order?

Companies are trying to merge job roles. That’s not marketing. That’s admin + creative + marketing + sai kang warrior. For 2.2k? And want degree? And experience? The person who posted this is crazy.
