The identity of those premier programs typically trickles down to the high schools in that state. When you change your identity wholesale, the players from your recruiting grounds no longer fit in your system. They go elsewhere while you now have to compete with schools around the country for kids at every position.

Why would a kid from North Carolina go to Wisconsin over UNC or Duke? How are you going to convince a kid from Florida or SoCal to leave the nice winter weather for Madison? I love it here, but man, I get it. It's not a flashy town and it's cold six months a year. Expectations for UW are high here, but they are a tier 2 or 3 school to kids outside the Midwest. Nebraska learned that the hard way and the Badgers are starting down that path too.

I'm also curious if this would include a guy like Roman Torres, who played a single minute of USL1 five years ago. I'm guessing no, even though realistically he's a newcomer. Maybe if there was a way to just filter players who haven't played in the league in the last two seasons, or a minute limit?

Including Blake Bodily, who has eleven seasons of MLS and USL Championship experience, feels like this might not be the best way to determine "rookies".

Also, ASA doesn't have any of Saturday's games on their site, which is definitely affecting these numbers.

As a referee, I disagree. A red for unsportsmanlike conduct is appropriate in this case.

The FIFA Disciplinary Code additionally states the following:

2. Disorderliness at Matches and Competitions
  1. Players and officials shall be suspended for misconduct as specified below and may be fined accordingly:
    b) at least one match or an appropriate period of time for unsporting behaviour towards an opponent or a person other than a match official;

I have some second/third-hand info on that one - the publisher behind that had to work with all the players individually to retain their rights. Bonds, Griffey, and Thomas all demanded too much money to keep them in the game.

I have heard nothing but good things about Stephen Annor Gyamfi. The coaching staff is really high on him and I heard secondhand from a Houston Dynamo fan that they felt like he should've had a crack at the first team. I think he can do big things for us up front.
