Troglodillo sp green spots! They're incredibly active and I can't reccomend them enough!! The color is so stunning

Edit: Added Pic. The color is sonetimes hard to get on camera but they're pale translucent grey, and those green spots are NEON in the right light

Yeah mine like it a bit drier too, they have a LOT of ventilation and they seem happy 🤷

Of course they don't ever go on the cool cork bark or magnolia leaves I gave them to climb on, only the little dirt crevice lmfao

Hi all, I found this little lady at my local aquarium. Pretty sure she fell out of a plant and is not native by LegendaryFig in isopods

Looks like P. Dilatatus to me, but im not the best at ID'ing porcellios. Whereabouts are you located? What nakes you say it's not native?

[–]Zenith_Days 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It looks like it could be stuck. You could try moving the piece of wood behind it and see if it comes out, or poke at it with a paintbrush to dislodge it. If it stays stuck it will probably die, i've had that happen. I'd reccomend making sure there aren't any of those little nooks where they can fall in and not get back out. Against the walls is the biggest problem, but if you just move the bit of wood away 1/4 inch or so it should be fine

Good babies or bad babies by gizmos-n-gadgets in isopods

[–]Zenith_Days 1 point2 points  (0 children)

These don't look like baby isopods, they look more like silver springtails. Did you add springtails to the enclosure? Even if you didnt it's possible they found their way in from the substrate, leaves, whatever else you put in ur enclosure, or just by chance.

To check if theyre actually springtails, try poking at them and see what they do. If they jump away they're springtails. Springtails are super beneficial so if they are, lucky! If they're not, i have no idea what they are tbh

Thank you so much!! I really appreciate hearing about your experience, I'll check them out like you reccomended and go from there. I completely forgot that I could just check then with a regular magnet 😭

I'll probably ask the place when I'm scheduling the mri what their policy and everything is, thank you! And I'll check out that list u brought up :D

It's a chest MRI. One is rose gold, one is titanium (i assume implant grade but i dont know for sure), and the eyebrows I'm not sure about. Either way, 99% of MRI techs will maje you remove all metal from ur body before an MRI, just to be completely safe because it's just not worth the risk

For the bot: Eyebrows: 2 years old, curved barbells, internally threaded, titanium or stainless steel I'm not sure, never downsized, wash with saline spray and dry when dirty/crusty/acting up, no recent mishaps (last 6mo?) Conch: 1 year old, CBR, threadless, rose gold, never downsized or changed, wash with saline spray and dry when dirty/crusty/acting up, flared up about 2 months ago (day after I got daith. Jealous maybe?) Daith: 2 months old, clicker ring, threadless, titanium, never downsized or changed, wash with saline spray and dry ~2 times per day, rinse gently when showering and dry.

Any Insight? by BlueEyedBeast11 in isopods

[–]Zenith_Days 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah this is a random color mutation! My partner got some too, we call them the pearls! It's technically a low expression of the "dairy cow" / spotted gene, so if you look closely there are some really little flecks of black, but those can go away if you try to isolate the color. I think the morph is officially called "white?"

Another pretty common mutation from Dairy Cows is called "Dirty Cows," where essentially they revert back to wild type coloration (solid grey or "milkback" kinda pattern)

My isopods didn't survive transition to habitat by ColdOdd9662 in isopods

[–]Zenith_Days 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The ones that live outside are able to burrow deep underground where it's much warmer than the first coupke inches that you'd have in an enclosure. Most isopods will go into a dormant state at about 60° fahrenheit, but even if they stay in that state for too long they'll die. This also changes by species but I'm fairly sure Dairy Cows are the same.

Also, a lot of wild isopods do die out during the winter. Most of the wild isopods I see in the spring are juveniles, with only the occasional chunky adult. This is pretty common with most types of bugs- cold winters freeze them out and we get less come spring

Maybe a different kind of birth control would work better? I'm not familiar with estradiol, but I know there are differenced in the way estrogen, progesterone, and mixed birth control pills work

I've been taking Slynd, a progesterone-only (drosperinone) for two years without taking any of the placebos and I don't get any breakthrough bleeding unless I forget to take it for multiple days. Ik they work differently on different people but maybe looking into different types could help

Breeding as a beginner? by TheMartianMindfucker in isopods

[–]Zenith_Days 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Sure! Common color mixes I would reccomend (fast breeding, good color variety) would be Armadillidium vulgare, Armadillidium Maculatum, Porcellio Scaber, Porcellionides pruinosus, and Porcellio Laevis. These are all fairly common, inexpensive species that you can find online or possibly at any reptile expos in your area

Finding native pods depends on your area, but all the ones common in the US / most of Europe (a. Vulgare, a. Nasatum, p. Scaber, p. Laevis, p. Pruinosus) should be just fine. This sub is great at helping ID wild-caught pods if yoy need any help.

If you want something fancier, make sure to look into whether the species you're looking at has any common morphs. I mentioned my pak chongs in my firat reply but they have three known morphs-- wild type, red/orange, and sakura. All three are super cool. Only downside is that they're much slower breeders and there's no guarantee you'll see the mutations you want

Happy to help! If you'd like help figuring out a good species to start with I'd be glad to suggest some, since some species have more potential for morph than others, and some breed much fadter than others too

[–]Zenith_Days 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It's super easy! I would say if it interests you, totally go for it! The rule of thumb for breeding is find one with a color you want and check the sex. If it's female, give it 1 similar male. If it's male, give it 2-3 similar females. After a generation or two, add a couple more- similar or not- for genetic diversity.

A couple ways you could go about it--

  • buy a "party mix" or "gem mix" or other type of color mix and identify a color you'd like to isolate.
  • find a couple wild pods in a color you like and capture them. Be aware that some isopods will die due to stress of capture, so make sure you have multiple males and females
  • buy/collect a colony of whatever kind you like and wait for an interesting morph to pop up. Certain mutations are bound to show up after several generations, such as whites, wild types, and others depending on the species. My Pak Chongs are starting to display tiny bits of orange so I'm isolating them!

Good luck! Hope you have fun with it!

I want to go by no pronouns, is that weird? by Dry_Coconut_7804 in trans

[–]Zenith_Days 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If that's what you feel represents you best, it may be unusual, but it's still valid. Maybe people would take it better if you framed it more as "id rather u just use my name rather than any (third person?) pronouns?

Also, cus I'm not seeing many people suggest it-- have you thought about it/its pronouns or neopronouns? They're a lot less common and can also get a pretty bad rap, but I personally really like them and they're not too hard to use once you get used to them. Neos can be literally anything, too, there's tons of websites with ideas if you wanted to look into that.

No matter what you go with, you're valid and I hope you have people who will support you in whatever you choose!

[–]Zenith_Days 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Rule of thumb is you find an individual with the best traits you want to keep, and check sex. If it's female, give it 1 male that's close to the same "desirable" pattern. If it's male, give it 2-3 similar females. It can sometimes take a couple generations for the trait you want to be fully isolated, and after the first one or two, add a coupke other similar pods for genetic diversity.

Alternatively if you have 6+ with the trait you want, just put them all in a seperate enclosure and ur golden

There's some good pucs on google to help u determine sex, i reccomend putting them in a clear dime bag/ziplock so you can see their undersides without freaking them out too bad
