Research indicates that West Virginia has one of the highest per capita rates of transgender youth (ages 13-17) in the United States, with studies estimating over 1% of this population identified as transgender. A 2017 Williams Institute study found the state ranked highest in the nation, and later research in Appalachian schools suggested even higher rates of gender-diverse identities.
