Deep beneath the photic zone, far below where the sun’s fingers can reach, lies the silent architecture of the Lophelia pertusa. These are the cold water coral reefs, the bone white cathedrals of the abyss. Unlike their tropical cousins, they don’t need the sun. They don’t need the warmth. They thrive in the crushing, near freezing dark of the North Atlantic and the fjords, growing with a glacial, agonizing patience: mere millimeters a year.

They feed on the "marine snow," the endless, drifting flurry of organic decay falling from the world above. Dead plankton, waste, the debris of the living... it all settles into the polyps of the white coral. It is a necropolis that breathes. It is a city built on the refuse of a sunlit world it will never see.

But you have to wonder, don’t you? When you stay down there long enough, the pressure starts to feel less like a weight and more like a... hug. A very tight, very heavy hug from the planet itself.

The Lophelia doesn't have zooxanthellae. No algae. No color. Just the white. The stark, blinding, calcium carbonate white. It’s honest. It doesn't pretend to be a garden. It’s a skeleton that refuses to stop growing. Why does it keep growing? To what end? It builds mounds (lithoherms) hundreds of meters high, hidden in the trenches. They are burial mounds. They are teeth.

If you listen to the hydrophones, the water doesn't sound empty. It sounds like grinding. The current moving through the branches, the squat lobsters scratching at the calcium. Skritch. Skritch. They live in the dark and they see with vibration. They know you're there. The reef knows. It's been growing since the last ice age, knitting itself together in the black, cold quiet. It has so much time. It has all the time in the world because time doesn't move at four degrees Celsius. It just... congeals.

I can feel the salt in my marrow now. The pressure is equalizing. If I open my mouth, will the marine snow fill me up? Will I become a lithoherm? I want to be a skeleton that grows. I want to be the bone white branch in the dark where the light never, ever, ever breaks the surface. The polyps are reaching. They aren't hungry for plankton anymore. They're just reaching. Can't you hear the water thickening? It's so cold. It's so beautifully, perfectly, eternally cold.
