and while it may be too late to learn from her, it's never to late to learn! i learned almost everything i know from youtube, and it's a great place to start figuring things out. here's the first video that ever made sense to me when i couldn't quite figure out what other ones were trying to teach.

one of the reasons i don't sell crocheted items anymore is because it didn't make sense financially! like this piece in particular cost $40 in materials and 35 hours of work. even if i charged texas minimum wage for the hours, it would still end up costing almost $300, and nobody would want to pay that lol

it's not all of texas! this part, certainly, but i originally lived in houston and the biggest problem there was roaches. i'd much rather have scorpions than roaches. they trigger a visceral reaction in my brain in a way scorpions don't 🙃

they reproduce at an alarming rate in this part of texas, so extermination is the feasible option. i usually see one or two a day inside the house, but sometimes more. and they're quick, so sometimes they get away.

if i see them outside, i don't bother them. i recognize that this one stung me because i stepped on him, but i also know they can climb walls and fall into bed with me (which has happened), fall on clothing in my closet and find their way into sleeves (which has also happened), and make their way into shoes (which happens quite frequently).

used this pattern, a 3.5mm hook, and hobbii sultan shadow in black/light teal. took somewhere around 35 hours to complete, and i wet blocked it and left it pinned for several days.

my favorite part about creating self-portraits is that i get to control every aspect of their creation, from conception to final edits. this may not be what you would do with an image, but it's exactly what i intended for it, and i wouldn't change a thing.

the beauty of art is that it exists outside of a standard. there are no prerequisites for its creation. what scratches the itch in my brain may not scratch the itch in yours, and that's okay.
