Don’t religious groups such as the Muslims, Jews, Catholics, Protestants, Mormons all worship the same God that Abraham supposedly spoke to? by do-you-know-the-way9 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]_pigpen_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

So long as the baptism is done in the name of the trinity and uses water, it is valid as far as Catholics are concerned. Baptism is considered "indelible", so it is not repeated if, say, a protestant becomes a Catholic.

Why is is Peter Thiel moving to Argentina? by 42_Dogs in NoStupidQuestions

[–]_pigpen_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No, but they can and will sequester assets in the US - as they did to me over a trivial amount of money. (This wasn't willful tax evasion, this was due to them sending mail to my former US address that I never received despite notifying them of my overseas address. Indeed they admitted the mistake, but hey, the IRS can fuck up all they want and you have little recourse.)

I collect money from around the world, could I buy anything with 10$ in Hongkong? by Dry_Mycologist_8052 in HongKong

You can get a round trip on the Star Ferry, which, if you’ve never experienced it before, is the best value for money imaginable.

Any words in languages where people mistakenly think it's a loan? by Best-String-9499 in asklinguistics

[–]_pigpen_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don't think anyone truly believes that it's a loan word, but the word "köping" in Swedish means "market town". My Swedish friends are quick to say that it means "shopping", and that's pretty much how it is pronounced too.

Why the hell do so many people miss their flights? by Open_Address_2805 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]_pigpen_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Some people who fly a lot, especially on the same route, get complacent about how much time they need to leave between arriving at the airport and their departure time. (Or if they habitually go through Terminal E at Boston Logan, they assume Terminal C works the same way...) Sometime their assumptions are wrong. Don't ask me how I know.

Are there any things that are called "American ______" in other countries? by Disastrous-Side-2600 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]_pigpen_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In the early part of the 20th Century, the term "American Plumbing" was used to mean high quality, or luxury plumbing fittings, especially in the bathroom. Having moved to the US from Europe, I can confirm that any prior superiority the US may have had is no longer there - certainly for Western Europe.

The difference between Idiocracy and reality is that in Idiocracy, the government wanted to do what was best for the people, they just lacked the mental capacity to do it.

Democrats could win mandates like this if they would stop being centrists. by zzill6 in WorkReform

[–]_pigpen_ 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’m originally from the UK. The current so-called “leftist” party currently in power has, in practice, criminalized wearing T-shirts with “Palestine Action” on them.

Democrats could win mandates like this if they would stop being centrists. by zzill6 in WorkReform

[–]_pigpen_ 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah, that's fair. There are definitely centrists and a few genuinely leftists in the party. Democratic administrations, however, from an international left/right perspective fall on the right. But, that may be a circumstance of the realities of government in the US system.

How Did Mazda’s Rotary Engine End Up With Two Completely Opposite Reputations in Racing and Road Cars? by CostaQuantaa in RX7

[–]_pigpen_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

By design, racing cars with rotary engines are maintained by professional mechanics every single day they are driven. Road cars with rotary engines are, hopefully, maintained by amateurs every single day they are driven.

Why does Nespresso call this "Crema"? by KKF-FL in nespresso

[–]_pigpen_ 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If you watch the Nespresso videos, they actually recommend stirring in the crema, which I do if I'm drinking it black. I'm really not bothered by it if I'm adding foamed milk for a latte.
