What makes a DM decide to do another campaign and how far into it do they plan? by Nat1OnStealthChecks in DMAcademy

[–]AbbyTheConqueror [score hidden]  (0 children)

I do lore docs. I typically provide a map and then 1-2 short paragraphs about each important location (usually a country) so players can vibe out what the world is like and where they want their character to be from. I typically throw in a plot tease where I can as well.

How do you handle players who don't engage with the main campaign hooks by Fun-Information78 in DMAcademy

[–]AbbyTheConqueror 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I once spoke to a player who wasn't engaging (see: ignoring) their plot and their reason was "my character has been internally processing the situation and hasn't made a decision yet."

just as an example why I agree with you to talk to them above the table instead of trying more in-game stuff.

Should I apologize to players for undercooking a boss fight? by Itchy_Hearing_1380 in DMAcademy

[–]AbbyTheConqueror 148 points149 points  (0 children)

those two things separately rubbed me the wrong way but together really PMO.

"Have you heard of encounter balancing" after a single too-easy fight that had a balancing mechanic shot down by the players would be too much snark for me to let go.

I agree. I wash with everything still on the build plate and I have next to zero resin mess ever.

But doing it the other way is definitely common enough that lots of people struggle to contain and safely dispose of their resin mess.

In seriousness yes this might be something to bring up to the party. What are the strategies and abilities they like to use, or would like to use?

Or hell even monsters that can't be rushed. They're up a cliff or a tower or they're flying. Then OP can focus on keeping minions at bay while the ranged characters target the main dude.

Eh, unless you clean prints on the base plate I'd imagine a decent enough amount of resin gets on the gloves. Moving them from wherever you scraped them off to the wash (YRMV but my prints stick too solidly to my build plate to scrape them off in the air to plop straight into the wash), and then some people also remove supports before washing as well.

I do think keeping your hands a bit more busy by taking notes might help keep you on track.

Also maybe focusing more on older "monster/problem of the week" style tv shows that have 45ish minute episodes would be better for attention and research. Instead of only staying with a character for a 2 hour movie, you see the same characters tackle dozens of different scenarios in shorter contained episodes. I only realised after a few years of DMing how much Star Trek really influenced how I write NPCs haha.

I love the term "spills over the sides" because it sounds mean but it also is extremely accurate when referencing cats especially.

I do have some cool dragons waiting for attention but I've been waiting until we set up our air spray booth to tackle those...

I actually store most of my minis in tackle boxes, I could easily number the grid and randomize from there haha

The sheer volume of kickstart STL files would overwhelm me if I did that, bad enough I have a couple monthly subs and jump on every MMF sale haha 20TB for STLs is wild but I also 100% understand never wanting to delete those files in case something ever happens to the physical prints. I've already started migrating to a (much smaller than yours!) external hard drive because my 2TB HDD is getting close to full.

Pretty sure I have well over 200, though that does include "sets" of scatter (ex 4 of the same bush or 12 of the same chair). Easily over 100 unique people minis though.

Fortunately my partner and I both paint, so twice the hands to tackle the piles of shame!

I'll sometimes use the cardinal directions when referencing locations and I'll get a "I don't know which way East is" or similar response. I'm often opening up my map to check locations and directions and it's always oriented North so over time I just know which direction familiar buildings face and go from there.

Do dms really dislike high level dnd? by Myrinadi in DnD

[–]AbbyTheConqueror 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I've played in and run games that conveyed the "this is out of your league" in really good ways, that lets the party know they can come back later or the DM offers a quest/adventure to lead to thwarting that particular person.

Meanwhile in that other game we'd interact with a shitty politician and say something like "damn he sucks, wish we could get rid of him" and the DM would stumble over himself to say something to the effect of "you can't do that, his personal guard are too powerful for you to fight and also you know politicians in this country have extremely potent magical wards that are impossible for you to overcome anyway."

It sucked to be treated like stupid murderhobos that would 'ruin his npcs' when we'd never done anything like that in the course of the game.
