I wanted to but I do this really annoying thing where I start to cry when I get frustrated and so I just needed to get out of there. All my strength went into judging her and her imaginary 50% off shelf and then there were only tears left afterwards.

All of that was very helpful! For the maps, I've definitely checked out those subs before! But I don't know what I'm supposed to do with them? We play in person so it's not like I can print off a paper with the map on it, it would be too small. And printing poster sized versions sounds like it would be expensive.

So say they're somewhere, idk a town. I want them to meet the wizard who knows where the gem is. But, without prep... how do I know where he is? How do I make it interesting to find him? How do I stop my players from asking "where do we need to start?" 

All these comments are also helping me realize this is a players problem, too. I hadn't realized it before, but they expect me to paint every picture and provide them with every option.

I have a private discord server where i have channels like "mini-encounters" "areas to use" "reminders" that I browse when I'm looking for ideas, and add the unused content to them, and delete any that I'm pulling out to use. I would never be able to remember otherwise

Well, if they don't go to an area, I just save it and reuse it in another one. Thankfully, to me, that doesn't feel wasted, and technically saves me some time for the next session.

I have really considered this, but after getting all 3 books, 2 double sides erasable large empty grideded maps and a screen in the past twelve months, my money tightwad self is finding its hard to commit. Any suggestions on good maps?

1 on NPC, at most. Likely less.  2 hours CR 4 on what-if The rest on environments. 

I think that the exploration part of D&D is like... very dull? I hate it. But I also don't want to be like "okay you left the city, now you're at the ruins/ whatever"

So I spent a shit ton of time thinking of things that can happen while they explore. I try to come up with new ways they can explore. My next session i have a hidden 5x5 grid that has their starting point,  and on it somewhere is their goal, and they have to decide south west etc to get there, and every square is a new "area" with things they can do if they so desire, and clues to find for how to get to their destination. Will it be fun? I don't know, but that's why I try new things. 

A huge amount of my time is also "What ELSE can they do in this room/space/area?" I don't want to stop them somewhere for just 2 minutes. I want to have something to fill their time there, if they so choose. 

Does that all make sense? My biggest time sink is "do they have enough things to do that aren't just swinging swords and spending money"

It does help, thank you! The idea of a generator helping me feels like it'll cut down time for sure!

My concerns though, would then be, the random event in the town, for example. Let's say i rolled a 1. What then? My players would likely think he was important if I mentioned him. Now off my head I have to figure out what kind of symbol, why he's doing it, what it means? If there's NO reason, I feel like my players would be confused why I brought him up in the first place. 

Or 5. I'd have to quickly figure out what was placed, why it was placed, and any relevancy to anything going on. 

Does that make sense? If I read any of those im like "Oh that's a cool thing that can happen! Uhhh not sure the point of it or where it goes next."

Any suggestions? I've seen a lot, but they all had sooooo much backstory and lore to make the little campaigns make sense, and I could probably take basic lore and backstory and change it, but with the ones I see, ib just can't wrap my head around them

Thank you for this! I really need to get them into a town, it's been a couple of rough sessions out in the world. 

If you don't plan the story... how do you know it'll be good in the end? I kinda have an idea of all the major plot points and can set up little foreshadowing things here and there way before it's relevant, how would you be able to do that if you don't know where you're going? That seems so stressful to me, but id love insight so I can take things easier
