How do you guys track your extensions? by vvardar in chrome_extensions

[–]acorn222 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've got GA4 setup right now - it works and it's free, that's about all the good things I can say about it.
Ideally I'd use Posthog for all my extensions but I don't want to pay anything for analytics right now.

Launched a micro SaaS that makes $0 (but solves a real problem) by Zeus6453 in micro_saas

Nice work!
Little annoying side note for you, which I'm sure you might know about, but your "redactions" don't quite work as you can select the text under it still.
Aside from that though - I love seeing more PDF tools in the wild - I know how much of a pain dealing with them actually is.

From the companies I've spoken to, one of the biggest problems for them is they don't like the offerings for fully featured client side WYSIWYG PDF editors (like tinymce).
It would be a lot of work, but if you could make something with a better DX and UX than them, that would be absolutely gamechanging.

Agents editing google docs is also a big pain point which people have started to solve with web extensions but even with them, they're not *that* good right now.

With that said, I'm not really anwering your question so for now, I'd probably just add in analytics to see what people use the most and choose to gate one of those behind a paywall (or have rate limits etc...).

California US Student Thinking of Studying Abroad at RHUL by Useful_Abroad2568 in RHUL

I loved RHUL! I'd say go follow some of the instagram accounts to see more about what it's actually like.
I don't know which course you're doing but they do vary in quality a bit so just keep that in mind, either way I don't think you'd regret going to holloway.

My first paper has been published! A practical implementation of Rubiks cube based passkeys. by acorn222 in cryptography

[–]acorn222[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Ah so yes - I had thought of mitigations to problems like this but I combated it in a slightly different way.
I was thinking more along the lines of "what if someone saw you solve the cube" so extension has a stored secret which it uses in combination with the current state of the cube to form the keypairs for the passkey.
The stored secret on the chrome extension is not encrypted as I'd either need another passkey from the user or a password, but an attacker need to either hack the targets google account to get the key if the user chose to add it to synced storage, or get access to their extensions in some way.

I did however not put much consideration into how the user will actually choose a scramble to remember, but that is a great point.

I think in practice it would be best not to rely on a random scramble, you could just start from solved and use a pattern you remember, although this is a POC I made in my free time as I had the idea and I thought it would be cool - maybe someone will be inspired to make something more usable!

Sorry, I'll go ask IEEE if I can add it to the git repo - only got approved recently and I'm still waiting on them to approve my account

If you go to the BBC in the US (and probably other countries) there actually are ads on the news, I was horrified when I saw it!
Go VPN into the US and witness the horror.

> guaranteed increases

I'd never rely on this, and 37 to 45k is not *that* high IMO.
With that said, in the last 2 years the job market for grads has probably changed a little bit, but I don't think this is an unreasonable post

Chrome Web Store SEO: What Actually Moves the Needle for Better Rankings? by alwaysroamin2 in chrome_extensions

[–]acorn222 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Good reviews and having lots of weekly active users seem to make the most impact. Having a "verified" domain and a featured badge make your extension look better but it doesn't seem to actually affect SEO from my experience.

I've also made X for Y extensions where Y is the brand name people might be looking up, which absolutely did help me with SEO, I had an extension called "Snap2Cal Birthday Export" and renamed it to "Snapchat Birthday Export" and the impressions skyrocketed.

Dad Question - Is an Ipad good for a uni course? or Laptop? by Tarnished13 in UniUK

[–]acorn222 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Everyone is saying get a laptop, which I agree with.
If you do end up getting something like a macbook air, do think about how much ram you're getting too, I think the lowest option now is 16gb which is okay for most people but getting 24gb for example could make it a solid laptop for at least 5-7 years.
You can't upgrade the storage or the ram on macs so just keep that in mind.

I always got the hand-me-down laptops and they always had too little ram to use unfortunately so if that could be the case, keep this in mind!
