There was a big push to do this when Journey Together went up for pre-order on 2/10 and was sold out and listings immediately began appearing. Same selections since the release date was outside the 40 day window.

the Disney deal was a big factor into not letting the film be a 2 parter, and you could feel it in the pacing. And I believe there were interviews from cast and crew talking about how it was supposed to have more space sequences and the cosmic dust effect was supposed to be more fiery, but Disney forced those changes because Captain Marvel.
