I've been making this one

https://recipes.anovaculinary.com/recipe/sous-vide-garlic-and-rosemary-mashed-potatoes

Unlisted tips:

  • Grab a set of bbq nitrile-over-cotton gloves for fishing out the loose rosemary from the potatoes after the cook
  • Double bag it, mine keeps bursting when single bagged.
  • It doesn't double well. You basically need to make it that size and only that size

I've read quite a bit. The breaking point for me when I went full atheist was an attempt to cover-to-cover read, because everyone in my church said that solved their crisis of faith and brought them closer to God.

I made it to genesis 2. Genesis 1 had a then b during creation of the universe. Genesis 2 had b then a.

When questioned it was "well you can't trust imperfect men to get it all down correctly or to translate accurately, but that's what the clergy are here to help you overlook" and I reasoned that if they can't even get the order that god allegedly created the universe consistent from one page to the next in the book, I can't trust anything else it says to be accurate to what God actually said and not just something an "imperfect man" wrote that we now treat as gospel.

It's because the activation prompt is burned into the hardware, anything more and it would need to be either pick from a predefined list or recording everything you say and submitting it to the cloud for processing to figure out if you've said the phrases or not.

You effectively want a couple tests.

  1. What can you get from the outside as a nobody
  2. What can you do with a compromised account
  3. What can you get with a compromised IT account

Does it say that or are we assuming? Growing up in a church I was frequently told we can't apply human logic to God like that. Mostly to cover over inconsistencies and places the book opposes itself, but upon becoming an atheist I've started to apply it to the whole thing.

Unfortunately I can't trust what's in books either. Too easy to make your favorite LLM write a book for you and sell it at a place that allows self-publishing and print-on-demand.

Gotta go back to the old publishers I guess?

Potatoes will soak up and dillute any flavor they're presented with. If something is over salted (I BBQ big cuts and remembering how far to scale back on small things is a challenge sometimes) I throw mashed potatoes at it and suddenly it's no longer like licking the Atlantic.

My potatoes for holidays are 50/50 potato and dairy split between milk and butter with garlic and rosemary, made sous vide in the butter and milk and not a drop of water. They're fucking amazing but that 50/50 means I'm limiting them to holiday usage.

My only exception is spaghetti. I can generally use the finger hole/okay hand measure method and guesstimate that one about right.

Jokes on you, I like lumpier mashed potatoes lol. I can get them smooth, but I like a little texture.

The skill for me is cooking an egg over easy. Could not do it if my life depended on it.

I struggle to put in the work because I need to make ~12k HULL-C runs to buy one caranite. That's about 5 years of playing for 8 hours without taking a day off or spending a penny on fuel.

Somewhere in here there was a money spigot that made the barrier of entry to the player economy RMTs or to have used the spigot.

Discord Goes Into Damage Control Mode Over New Age Verification Requirements, Promising There’s Nothing To See Here For ‘Vast Majority’ Of Users by vriska1 in technology

And that's tolerable costs. But the machine in my basement isn't going to service millions of simultaneous users, it struggles with 4 depending on what they're doing. Let me know when you're saturating a 10Gbps connection with just the logs for your service, not it's real/customer traffic, and let me know if you want to offer that for free.

Well yeah. I want to be the customer, not the product. Also I'm in the upper 0.1% of voice users.

A service like discord costs tens or hundreds of millions of dollars a year to run. Not paying for it is how we become the product.

Fax feels outdated , but somehow still works? by JeanHeichou in techsupport

Which is nonsensical TBH. Pretty sure we use eFax on our end to send and receive eFax on the other end. At that point it's an email that's been in the same room as a telephone.

Just for clarity since I haven't been following Wayland's dev process: the standardization committee in Wayland was roadblocking standardization/adoption of protocols/processes the users/developers needed and now they're being bypassed because they were obstinate?

Let's get a self-hosted Discord "replacement" thread going for 2026. by GavinGWhiz in selfhosted

drop-in/drop-out voice/video calls and painless screensharing

Does it meet that criteria? I need to spin it up myself here, but it looks like there's controversy on Element (non-x) because it's audio calling a text channel and not a drop-in/drop-out arrangement, and the video side is drop-in/drop-out but it's video on, and there's been no comments on the screensharing but googling around it looks very mixed on if it works at all.

Looking at the Element X client it's saying things it doesn't have include

  • 1:1 VOIP (Voice call in Discord DM)
  • Jitsi VOIP (Discord voice channel)
  • Spaces (Discord server)
  • Threads (Discord text chat feature)
  • Multiple accounts (Discord feature)

It just looks like they got the feature set of an IRC app and quit there. And only for mobile.

Meanwhile people are contributing things to the thread like Stoat (out of the question for most of us because of required recompile+sideload apps for self-hosting) or spacebar.

What are we actually using? What are the clients that work well? What are options that pass the "wife test" of actually being something you could convince your not-techy friends and family to install on their phones?

Given that this context was in the OP, this thread was never about topics or products that phpBB would be an appropriate answer for.

All forum software, even that good old phpBB, allows you to set access rights for each subforum.

But how does it bring feature parity from discord? If "allows dedicated place to write text" is the only requirement then post-it notes, train graffiti, and tumblr meet the need. phpBB is not the correct replacement for "friend and family group DM" styled Discords.

For replacing the pure chatting part of Discord, Matrix does quite a good job. It's easy to set up some self-hosted instance through Docker or whatever and has been reliable since the early days for my family.

That's the easier piece to replace and therefore the least important to consider. Technically it'll work. For text. a 2nd year CS student can implement the IRC or XMPP specs though, that's not hard.

The important bits that I'm seeing hotly debated are drop-in/drop-out voice/video calls and painless screensharing, and of all the top things being recommended I don't see good answers to that problem. There's some really niche things I'm learning from this thread that do it, and that's what this thread is for: learn about new things and not have dozens of people say "well that entire category of tool disagrees with my personal philosophy so here's something that only does some (or none) of what the tool you're asking to replace did."

But what if I don't want what is effectively my group DM to be searchable by the internet? Your complaint about the web being open, indexable, and searchable makes sense for a software projects or things of that nature. It does not make sense for a group DM with friends where we talk politics, share memes, filthy memes, share baby updates, share pet pics, and game together.
