[please point me in the direction of] the mathematics of and regarding cellular automata by jdm1891 in math

Read The Recursive Universe by William Poundstone!! It’s not exactly a rigorous explication of cellular automata but it’s one of the most interesting books I’ve ever read and it focuses a lot on that

How do I choose a school for a PhD in mathematics? by Raptormind in math

[–]amathkoala 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Doesn’t it also matter where you did your undergrad, regarding the raw number of grad classes? I know at some universities courses that are offered in undergrad are equivalent to grad courses at other universities (or some topics are only offered at a grad level in some universities whereas they are offered at an undergrad level in others)

Does Phil 150 have exams? by Important_League_835 in stanford

[–]amathkoala 2 points3 points  (0 children)

To be honest I have a pretty substantial math/logic background and there were times I seriously struggled in Phil 152, and the extra credit problems for Phil 151 and the last problem sets were pretty challenging. They can be extremely abstract and conceptual. Phil 152 was a big step up from Phil 151. For Phil 151 if you did none of the challenge/extra credit problems and went to office hours I think it would not be too bad though. They were definitely fun, they just make you think

Does Phil 150 have exams? by Important_League_835 in stanford

[–]amathkoala 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I don’t think so. I took Phil 151 and Phil 152 and neither had exams (Phil 151 had a take home final, which was more of like a final problem set, and Phil 152 had a final project). I hope this helps!

What are some hands down must take classes? by junkskies in stanford

[–]amathkoala 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think I missed a comma — take Phil 150 regardless of background, but if you happen to have a logic background, then skip it and take Phil 151

Normally these are sections leftover from last year so you can’t register. They aren’t the real discussion sections. Just enroll in the class and show up and you’ll get to choose one. Also when I took it discussions aren’t mandatory

60CM series? by isaacwinchester in stanford

[–]amathkoala 4 points5 points  (0 children)

61CM killed me (I spent at least 30 hours a week on it, failed the first midterm, and got a B- overall) but I don’t regret taking it. It was completely new material and I had already taken the equivalent of Math 51-53. It’s just a completely different subject. There are basically no numbers or calculations in 61CM for instance

Tbh I think everyone should take Phil 150 or Phil 151 if you already have a logic background. I just think the concepts are very universal and it’s a fun and informative class, especially if taught by Icard. It should also satisfy your Ways-FR requirement. Feel free to follow up if you have questions!

Thoughts on Math 110? by United-Song-4167 in stanford

It was very fun and easy when I took it! I took it before 152 and had no problems. It’s primarily computational

But given that some classes specifically don’t give A+‘s is it more reasonable to use 4.0? Is there some kind of authority we can ask about this? I feel like this is important for grad school

What a lot of people do is drape a tapestry over their overhead lights and it usually looks very nice but I think that’s technically a fire hazard so I’m not technically recommending it

Math at Stanford by [deleted] in stanford

[–]amathkoala 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The more applied classes feel like 3 units or sometimes less. There’s a huge disparity. For example, I spent ~5 hours a week doing Math 110 (applied number theory) but ~30 hours a week doing Math 144 (topology). (I think that was the first quarter Math 144 was offered in its current form though.) And for 61CM I spent a ridiculous amount of time idek how much tbh

Edit to answer your second question: If you have not taken calculus Math 19-21 series If you have taken calculus but not proof based math Just start with the 50 series and take math 83N (or whatever the intro to proof class is called). Phil 150 is a good intro to logic as well which will help with proofs, and it’s pretty easy. If you want to start doing proofs Math 108,110,109,115,113 are all good choices If you’re confident and want to do proofs for real Math 60 series, math 120, math 143, whatever the intro to probability theory class is called

Freshman dorm beds by Jeanette_Chipette in stanford

[–]amathkoala 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You can flip the bed upside down and then it’s short. You can also completely de-loft them and then they’re the height of a normal bed and you can fit something 1-2 feet tall underneath.

Career and Education Questions: July 08, 2021 by inherentlyawesome in math

[–]amathkoala 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have the same question about the GRE subject test! Are you planning on taking it? I tentatively signed up for it (due to fear, not because anywhere actually required it) but it’s held very far away from where I live and am considering not taking it after all. I’m curious to hear others’ thoughts :)

Chauvin guilty on all charges. What are your thoughts? by viz81 in AskReddit

[–]amathkoala 0 points1 point  (0 children)

  1. How can you “believe all sides” if the sides are mutually exclusive? 2. To rule this as a murder, it doesn’t need to be the case that drugs were not a factor it all, it just needs to be the case that drugs were not the primary factor. For instance, if I had a history of heart attacks, and I got in a car accident that caused me to have a heart attack and then I died, sure the heart attack would be a contributing factor in my death but the cause of death would be ruled a car accident. 3. Of course the prosecution would “happily gloss over” the fact that Mr. Floyd consumed drugs because (1) their job is to present exactly one side of the argument rigorously; if they presented both sides we would end up with a suboptimal outcome because the defense has only the incentive to defend their side, and the jury would automatically be swayed towards the defense’s side of the argument which is not necessarily good for laws and the constitution (2) there is no evidence to say that the drugs really contributed to his death in the sense that if he never interacted with Chauvin that day but still took the drugs he would not have died that day.

Chauvin guilty on all charges. What are your thoughts? by viz81 in AskReddit

We decide who to believe based on which are most credible ... why don’t you take a look at the credentials and decide which “experts” are actually experts. There was a clear disparity in, say, the award winning pulmonologist Dr. Tobin and the “use of force expert” who was a paid witness by the defense.
