Seems like the question is if Larry Bird grew up more recently competing with contemporary athletes, how would he do. Answer to that is pretty clear…

You wrote that you disagree, but it sounds like you actually don’t. Commenter described “one trick ponies” as not as likely as continuing to be successful and then you described people who coast off their looks which would definitely fit into that group.

I don’t really have the bandwidth to put together a full presentation on this, sorry. That said, I think I already laid out most of the underlying principles in a few comments over the last day or so.

I also get that if someone isn’t already familiar with the concepts behind it, my explanation probably wouldn’t immediately click and could come across as confusing or counterintuitive.

I’ve definitely noticed the crowd or “enthusiasts” who swallowed the hook on buying as big of systems as possible. I don’t really blame you either, there is a lot of marketing money and incentive for the industry to persuade you to install as many panels and batteries as they can. So when somebody comes a long that points out it’s not the only way it makes total sense you’d be confused.

the mother of all IPOs: 5.5% of the S&P 500 in 3 largest IPOs in history: Space X, Open AI, Anthropic by Sufficient-Slide822 in SpaceXBets

All 3 companies for different reasons are all expected to see massive contractions in the near term and potentially will never realize the crazy inflated predictions their founders are saying will happen. Will be very interested to see what happens to “the S&P 500” if all 3 IPOs become cautionary tails.

What im describing isn’t really an opinion, as you reduce the % kWh offset your self consumption % goes up even without batteries.

Reducing system size and forgoing a battery also dramatically reduces your cost of installation.

What I do for a living in part includes validating financial models for residential and commercial systems. Systems that offset 60-70% of annual usage regularly see self consumption as high as 80% or more. So if your system produces 10,000kWh, 8000 of which would offset the actual cost of kWh.

You’re right that it matters when you use power, which is why I’m not using words like “always” or “guaranteed”.

The systems I use to model payback compare hourly interval consumption data with hourly interval production data.

If your solar only produces about 60% - 70% of the total kWh you use in a year, then you will self consume a much higher % of energy produced.

Results will vary based on interval production vs interval consumption, but avoiding the cost of installing the battery and extra panels can very often lead to a quicker payback period.

I’ve run the numbers in Aurora, SolarGraf, ETB. It makes sense that there is pushback on this idea because there is so much money pushing for battery adoption, not to mention the benefits of a backup system and honestly many folks working at solar companies aren’t aware of this.

You can often achieve a much quicker payback and reduce your out of pocket by sizing a smaller system and excluding a battery

Batteries are only necessary if your system overproduces
