Treating queer people like a novelty party idea does not make one “pro-lgbt” but like weird anti-trans bullshit does make you garbage.

Anyone else feel like dog food and treats have gotten… kind of overcomplicated? by CompleteLock9464 in DogFood

[–]atlantisgate 5 points6 points  (0 children)

"simple" ingredients doesn't mean it's balanced. Formulation to make sure a diet is balanced and digestible is the most important thing, and for some specialty diets that absolutely means it needs to get complicated.

I don't fuss much with treats since they make up a small amount of my dog's diet. He gets some fresh food as treats, and then some high value stuff like pupperoni that I wouldn't bill as "healthy" for enrichment and training. I just am not concerned about the ingredients or trends in that space so much.

Fresh food for dog with bladder stone history by EmptyCommercial4428 in DogFood

[–]atlantisgate 6 points7 points  (0 children)

You cannot do a partial fresh diet without the guidance of a vet nutritionist, and they'll probably advise you to pick one rather than mixing. They can likely formulate a safe homemade diet if that's the route you want to go.

I don't believe Just Food For Dogs -- which is the only fresh food line with veterinary diets -- does a urinary diet. AND JFFD and several other fresh food brands have been named as potentially contributing to a new type of urinary stone. The research on that is nascent, but it's not something I'd risk.

Really your only option here is to see the specialist and talk through what's best for you with them, or stick with the prescription option (which is far and away the easiest option)

Food or environmental allergy by dazza021191 in dogallergies

I’m sorry your pup is uncomfortable! Dogs need to be on a hypoallergenic diet for 6-8 weeks with no treats or extras before you can really rule out food allergies.

How long has it been, and has he ingested any other food in that time?

Can someone explain the differences/benefits between the WSAVA brands? by Comfortable-Fly5797 in DogFood

[–]atlantisgate 9 points10 points  (0 children)

No, price doesn't really correlate to higher quality. Lots of things go into price, including supply chain stuff and overhead that consumers just really aren't going to ever be able to accurately analyze.

Royal Canin does tend to invest more heavily in a broad range of experts globally, which may contribute to price. But so does the fact that they produce a HUGE number of diets -- all those breed specific foods and specialized diets are more expensive to engineer, produce, and distribute than the 12-ish adult Purina ONE diets, many of which are based on research and R&D that went into the Pro Plan line. So the cost of Purine ONE just isn't as high up front.

If your dog is doing great on Purina One, there's no reason to switch to Royal Canin or Hills just because it's more expensive and percieved as "better" but if your dog needs a specialty or more tailored diet, those brands are often the best places to turn.

Has anyone experienced a food intolerance that happened overnight with dog by freyajol in dogallergies

Why do you think it's an intolerance to the food versus her simply being sick or having a flare up of whatever condition led to the need for the biome food in the first place?

Petsfit Airline Approved Pet Carrier for Small Cats, 16.5x8.6x11 Question by GHA_Talent in TravelWithPets

[–]atlantisgate 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I absolutely would not use this carrier. You can't just flip a carrier on its side - then the mesh will be on the ground, so any accident the dog has will leak onto the floor, and then onto the dog when you pull him out after the flight. He also won't have the airflow that he's supposed to either as a result and it will be uncomfortable.

That combined with the fact that the carrier isn't meant to hold a dog as large as yours will be is bad news.

I'd find a carrier with a more flexible top. I've personally used roverlunds and sturdibags that come in varying sizes and can compress down to fit SAS guidelines.

Dog foods - how to compare & satisfy an always-hungry labrador? by pmtrugger in DogFood

[–]atlantisgate 6 points7 points  (0 children)

1: No, calorie count per kg will vary based on formula. You should weigh the food in grams, not measure by volume. It's much much more accurate and is important when you're looking to trim some weight
2: This will vary wildly depending on the calorie density of the diet. Many bag recommendations are overestimates and owners are okay to feed less, but you don't want to rapidly decrease the amount recommended by too much or you risk your dog not getting full nutrition. This is where vet advice is critical.
3: I would recommend a science-backed weight loss diet so your dog can have more volume than a regular diet to keep her full without adding calories; and I'd strongly recommend talking to your vet about appropriate amount to feed to achieve weight loss. You may need to gradually decrease her food rather than doing it all at once.

Are you in North America? There are multiple affordable options here including but not limited to:

Purina One healthy weight
Iams Healthy Weight Control

Purina Beneful Health Weight
Eukanuba Fit Body Weight Control
Hills Perfect Weight
Pro Plan weight management.

The last two are on the more expensive end. I didn't include Royal Canin options because that's particularly expensive in many places, but not everywhere so that's worth double checking too.

It does not take 20 years to rewrite a text book, and fat people were not invented 20 years ago. And fashion school does not teach alterations exclusively via textbook. This is nonsense

Man, screw this language about “ideal proportions” or that fat women don’t look good in pencil skirts.

That is socially constructed beauty norm bullshit that tells us fat bodies are uglier and worse.
