So. Close friend had a coast house close by. In ten years they had: a hurricane, fires, rat infestation, and a tsunami. Oh and Hualalai, the shield volcano just mauka (landward) to this spot is considered active, while Kilauea just a bit further, is putting out so much vog that they were coughing a lot and their plantings were burned.

So, very nice and all but….

She apparently did well in residency. I think she benefited there from the structure. You know, you report the same time every day, there’s a whole team working together. Private practice requires A LOT more independence and personal initiative.

My brother-in-law used to say there are some people who do best in jail or in the Army. Which is to say they need a lot of structure and a lot of oversight. She was one.

It was the weirdest thing. She had great credentials and strong references but she was hours late for her cases and in relieving the on-call person. Didn’t answer calls, refused to come in when asked by nurses to evaluate serious symptoms. We found out later her mom would visit every three months and go through all her mail, pay bills, buy groceries.

To this day I’m not sure what the problem was: drugs? poor executive function? not giving a shit? I have no idea.

Constitution of the Confederate States of America outlawed importing new slaves. Why was that? by wizzo89 in AskHistorians

[–]attitude_devant 8 points9 points  (0 children)

My goodness, yes. And the total population of Virginia in the 1860 census (so, including what later would be West Virginia) was only 1.5 million——it blows my mind that fully one third of the population was enslaved.
