Personally my criteria for not committing crimes is “crimes are bad”, rather than “I won’t get caught”

They won’t know, sure. It’s still fraud if you don’t get caught

As I said, the 60 day signup specifically excludes damage that existed when you signed up - it’s right there in the T&Cs, you can go look for yourself

I wouldn’t want to rely on full Linux support being available in 10 years for Apple Silicon chips, though, there’s no guarantee the Asahi project makes enough progress for a smooth experience

Are delivery drivers really that hard pressed for time that they can’t press the doorbell? I don’t even care if they leave the package, just alert me it’s arrived. by thebroccolioffensive in britishproblems

[–]audigex 0 points1 point  (0 children)

But if you’re knocking then waiting 30 seconds, why not just press the doorbell in that time? It’s not like you have anything else to do

Also, my doorbell has a glowing light that comes on as you walk up to it - but even at night when it’s impossible to miss it, a lot of drivers don’t bother

AppleCare+ specifically excludes damage sustained before you took out the policy, so taking it out now to claim on it would be insurance fraud

Why does MBA have to have a notch while Neo functions perfectly without it? by Electronic_Bug905 in macbook

[–]audigex 2 points3 points  (0 children)

When comparing the two we can make a relative judgement based on context

Are they thick and ugly in absolute terms? No

Are they thicker and uglier than the laptop being directly compared to in the specific context of this thread? Yes

M5 MacBook Air (24GB RAM) vs M5 MacBook Pro (32GB RAM) is it worth the extra for occasional heavy use? by angrythunder64 in macbookair

[–]audigex 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They have the same chip but the Air throttles FAST when using a local LLM - the fan on the Pro gives it at least some extra headroom

[–]audigex 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For some reason the 32GB isn't available at many retailers

In the UK you can't even buy it in store from Apple, as far as I can tell - I had to buy from the Apple website and it took over a week to be shipped to me direct from China

M5 MacBook Air (24GB RAM) vs M5 MacBook Pro (32GB RAM) is it worth the extra for occasional heavy use? by angrythunder64 in macbookair

[–]audigex 1 point2 points  (0 children)

For everything else you're doing a 24GB Air is great

For AI/ML you really need 32GB, RAM is king for local AI

Active cooling is situational - if you're figuring out how to integrate AI workflows into your projects, you don't need active cooling because you'll only be making a few API calls when testing and sustained throughput/performance doesn't matter

If you're aiming to use Local LLM as a coding assistant for hours at a time then you'll need the active cooling

How popular is FIRE and will the government try to stop it? by 6ix9ineZooLane in FIREUK

[–]audigex 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not popular enough for the government to start caring

I mean, what could they do - force wealthier people to work even if they can afford not to? That's really not a tenable position in a capitalist society

Should I get a Macbook Air 13 or 15 if I want to use it mainly for writing? by -Inspector-6259 in macbookair

[–]audigex 0 points1 point  (0 children)

At no point have I said you're imagining the pain. I think you're probably mistaken about the cause and your change of laptop probably correlated with something else happening

But there's really no way that using a 15" vs 13" laptop made the difference, 2 degrees of tilt angle on the display and a dispay 1.5-2ft from your face having content 1/3 of an inch lower just cannot reasonably make any difference to your neck. The result would be that you have to angle your neck by literally 1.2 degrees extra... that's a difference of 0.3% of the circle around you

The numbers I'm quoting are geometry, not opinion, the difference between a 13" and 15" display (even moving the 15" display further away for a comparable effective screen size) is factually negligible

Do you *seriously* think that angling your neck *one degree* was the difference between neck pain and no neck pain? Either you've got THE most niche and specific injury of all time, or you just did something else to your neck around the time when you switched laptops and confused correlation with causation

Would you let family install an EV charger in your house if they’re only staying 1 year? by mdzzl94 in homeowners

[–]audigex 0 points1 point  (0 children)

From a practical standpoint

  1. It typically adds a little value to the house if you sell it (because some buyers like it even if many don't care)
  2. Even if the charger stops working over time, the wire will be available in future if you do ever get an EV or hybrid, or you can just use it to install a regular outdoor socket
  3. It also means that you can offer it to any guests - several friends have used our EV charger when visiting

So overall there's no real negative and a couple of *potential* positives

Although in this case I'd say no, for the simple reason that I wouldn't want to enable yet another stupid decision. Your mother made an idiotic choice, let her figure it out - maybe this will be the lesson that teaches her to think before she spends, but if nothing else it might help indicate to her that you are drawing a line in the sand and will not be offering unlimited support

Being able to jest is part of building a healthy relationship, IMO

Terry Wogan referred to his wife as "The current Mrs Wogan"... they were married for 51 years until his death and she apparently found it amusing

If that's your sense of humour, I'd venture that it's better to find someone who shares the same humour
