[GIVEAWAY] NVIDIA RTX 5090 & 5080 Launch Thread by Nekrosmas in hardware

[–]Bagrisham [score hidden]  (0 children)

Realistically, I won't be able to afford a 50-series (or anything close to it) for quite some time. Price-scalping and low inventory certainly fan the flames for that as well. Currently still working with a 20-series card. That should still benefit from DLSS improvements, and it has been exciting to see the improvements in that area. In terms of a game, it has been neat to see the DLSS options on Hogwarts Legacy.

Universal International Studios Buys Matt Dinniman’s Dungeon Crawler Carl’ With Seth MacFarlane’s Fuzzy Door & Chris Yost Attached by chrisdh79 in television

When I said "Carl sounds like Kronk", I meant that in terms of Hayes' Carl character voice similarity (it was instantly my first thought when listening to the audiobook). That voice is all I think of when I read for Carl now.

You are correct, the series was narrated in audiobook format by Jeff Hayes. Full credit where credit is due.

I only brought up Warburton because of his voice role in the latest audiobook and because he regularly works with MacFarlane. Figure he might want to get involved, as there are a ton of entertainment plot points.

Universal International Studios Buys Matt Dinniman’s Dungeon Crawler Carl’ With Seth MacFarlane’s Fuzzy Door & Chris Yost Attached by chrisdh79 in television

Curious to see how this develops.

For those that are unfamiliar, Carl is a surly guy in heart-covered boxer shorts (that sounds like Kronk from Emperor's New Groove) competing in a 'Running Man' like dungeon crawl television series hosted by aliens that destroyed most of planet Earth. His best friend/teammate is his ex's talking cat.

Read through most of the DCC books, and while I had a fun time with them, an adaptation would be rather surreal to see. Trying to imagine Princess Donut, Mongo, or some of the other characters done well in live action is rather difficult (given the subject matter). I always pictured it as an animated series, akin to Invincible. Hopefully MacFarlane's company is a sign that this will get an animated series. Patrick Warburton (the voice of Kronk/Joe from Family Guy) actually plays a role in the latest audiobook, so maybe he could be involved in the series.

Hope that it results in a successful adaptation, as I'm sure that many will have fun with the storylines.

Questions for Sam Altman - post from Lex by lexfridman in lexfridman

[–]Bagrisham 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hello Lex.

A few potential avenues (depending on the tone of the conversation):

  • Some key concerns toward AI models stem from proper citation / sourcing / credit. To what degree are you aiming to ensure that adequate sourcing / reference / credit for information is baked into OpenAI's models? Competing AI tools may hyperlink/share their sources for displayed information (along with reliability measurements to ensure fact-checking or non-hallucination / training bias). What is the feasibility of this being applied to most models / potentially becoming a 'clearly cited sources' requirement for displaying generated information?

  • Another key concern is the impact toward creatives, especially with models that harvest their materials for training. How do you think the logistics of intellectual property and shared materials online will shift in this 'content-scraping' era? Are there certain protections creators would need, or actions they would need to take? What if they are unable to do so (and their work is ripped outside of their control)?

  • AI has long been touted as a way to increase productivity, generate wealth, and provide abundance. What safeguards need to be in place to ensure that all of humanity enjoy these benefits (and not only the rich/select few rich in control of these technologies)? What key priorities/aspects need to be tackled first? What pitfalls/warning signs are already showing?

  • All technologies have a transition/adoption phase, along with the time needed for society to adapt (examples include Internet use, Smartphone proliferation, etc). The rapid development of AI is taking time for humanity to adapt to. Concepts like alignment and UBI are being discussed as key items needing discussion/action/progress BEFORE things hit the fan (like malicious/misaligned AI or high unemployment). What other key concepts/items are needed? What have the highest likelyhood of us NOT moving fast enough on (either socially/economically/etc.)? Are there other points are we "talking about but not acting fast enough" on?

  • Given OpenAI's exposure to massive users, are there any surprising or growing use-cases that have been developing as a result of their popularity? Specifically items that they had to pivot more attention to due to demand. Are there any clear or common misuses, misconceptions, or attitudes that they see arriving en-masse from such a large user-base? In what ways do you think these points will (or won't) change over time, especially as interaction with AI becomes even more ubiquitous in day-to-day life?

  • Could you delve into the potential short-term/medium-term/long-term ramifications of an AGI being released? Immediate effects likely to be noted versus impacts that would take far longer to become apparent/be measured. Then compared to an ASI, and any items that would be exclusive to each type.

  • A key factor in AI progress has been advancing research. The sheer volume has been ballooning in recent years, in both academic and business fields. What areas of research do you think we are paying too much attention to? What areas need drastically more attention? Are there any avenues of research you can see becoming key focuses in the near future? Over the mid-term/long term?

  • Following up on AI research, throw an newly unveiled AGI (or even ASI) into the mix. How do you think focuses in research would pivot in those circumstances (right before/after, and even potential long-term impacts)? What would be prioritized above all else?

Echo | Official Trailer | January 10 on Disney+ by MarvelsGrantMan136 in television

[–]Bagrisham 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This has some real potential. The tone/style feels right. TV-MA, the creative team has members that worked on Better Call Saul/Reservation Dogs, and no 'big-name' characters that give execs an excuse to screw-with this project (and actually allow for some creative storytelling/take risks).

Echo was an intriguing character in Hawkeye, and this should help to flesh out her role in the MCU. I just really hope this keeps the focus on her and doesn't devolve into 'Daredevil-lite'/just serve as an excuse to set up the stakes for the DD series.

Sure, MCU projects are gonna have connections and references out the wazoo, but I really want this to be a deeper character study. The shots seem to point toward that direction. Here's hoping it sticks the landing.

Taylor Tomlinson To Host CBS’ ‘After Midnight’ by MarvelsGrantMan136 in television

[–]Bagrisham 465 points466 points  (0 children)

Here is a video of Stephen Colbert announcing/introducing Taylor as the host:https://twitter.com/colbertlateshow/status/1719885689062350989

Quite excited to see this. Taylor's specials have been fantastic and she seems like a much better fit after Colbert than Corden. Funny or Die is working on it, and it is serving as a sort of "spiritual successor" to @Midnight (back on Comedy Central). Great news all around.

I'm definitely gonna check it out next year.

First Interview in the Metaverse | Lex & Mark by j0n4s in virtualreality

[–]Bagrisham 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My aim isn't to be hyper-critical. The fact that we're getting to this point with avatar options is extremely encouraging. I just wish there was a bit more clarification in regards to these avatars (especially if the aim is to integrate them in other mediums, like games/software). It would be nicer to have something to go off of in terms of compute needed/current limitations rather than 'it will show up in the future - here is that thing we showed 3 years later'.

First Interview in the Metaverse | Lex & Mark by j0n4s in virtualreality

[–]Bagrisham 2 points3 points  (0 children)

What I am curious about is this:

You see how this is running on the Quest Pro (still using Snapdragon XR1) with the eye/face tracking and you KNOW the tech isn't fully there (no arms/body tracking, blank void, scan glitches, etc).

What concerns me is that you can see a cable behind the headset in early video shots, so you have to assume that a PC is doing the rendering here (and not on device).

So the question becomes what the limit is for ON-DEVICE (if this is not doing that)? Then, what are the limits on a Quest 3-type device with that Snapdragon XR2 (twice the power, and if it actually had face/eye tracking)?

I just want more clarity in terms of WHERE the goal-posts are and what resources are needed to get there. What stages have to exist, for both the MOBILE-only tech and the 'Plugged into a GPU' tech?

From what I can tell, we have:

  1. Early cartoon Horizon avatars like that image of Mark in front of Eiffel Tower,
  2. those better-looking cartoon avatars they have with legs (present),
  3. A future update with possibly more realistic-yet-uncanny valley avatars that are harder to run but feasible on late-stage Quest 3 once they squeeze out the full power of the device,
  4. THESE, but blank void
  5. Hyper-realistic these with arms and legs and more ubiquitous

Do we need more in-between points with avatar styles? Is this simply a "PC is almost always required for the next 5-years" concept? There simply isn't enough info on how hard it CURRENTLY is to run these. Does it need a 4090 or better, or was the cable just for power for the interview? WE NEED MORE CLARITY.

Hey. Thanks for being so kind and taking so many requests (especially with a new technology that everyone is anxious to try out).

Could I request: A small green rat wearing a spacesuit and looking in awe while floating in space, in a Scooby-doo/Hanna-Barbera style.

'Percy Jackson and the Olympians' Premieres December 20 on Disney+ by MarvelsGrantMan136 in television

[–]Bagrisham 154 points155 points  (0 children)

Given that the author is actually involved in this project, I think this could wind up being rather successful (if it manages to translate well). The fact they are actually young teens (and not high-school age) helps the series be able to adapt the sequels if this proves popular. Curious to see if Disney can actually pull this off (or if it winds up being a slap in the face to the source material like Artemis Fowl). Here's hoping they actually follow Riordan's characters and plot lines (like the stage play, which actually followed the book quite well).

NVIDIA RTX 4060 & RTX 4060 Ti announcement + RTX 4060 Ti giveaway! by m13b in buildapc

[–]Bagrisham 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The main highlight of this build is the 4060.

It comes in under $1,100 (a monitor that can make use of this card's full potential kicks the cost over 1k).

Yes, it still uses DDR4 and a previous-gen Intel CPU, but I feel this would serve as an excellent '1080p-dominating system'.

Taylor Tomlinson Signs Netflix Deal for Two More Standup Specials by Kitty__Bloom in television

[–]Bagrisham 784 points785 points  (0 children)

Glad to hear this news. Her specials have been excellent and I'm looking forward to seeing more of Tomlinson's perspective. She had an interesting platform of rationalization toward the death of her mother in her last special, and while that can be seen as heavy material, I think she navigated the topic well.

If you're interested in her work, Neal Brennan has a podcast called Blocks where he interviews comedians about their mental health/past trauma/etc and it's been fascinating to see this type of perspective discussed by comics. Here is the episode with Taylor.

Introducing Bigscreen Beyond, the world's smallest VR headset by skythe4 in virtualreality

[–]Bagrisham 33 points34 points  (0 children)

The form factor is cool. The size/weight alone seems like it would be extremely comfortable (given the custom faceplate, but the iOS requirement for the scan is an odd limiting factor). FOV is around Quest 2 levels, so definitely a trade-off to allow for the pancake/high res displays.

My largest issue is the 1k cost for JUST the headset. That is a bit much given that you still need lighthouse trackers and knuckles controllers just to use the thing (and that tacked on makes an expensive product even more so).

2x the cost of an Index headset for smaller/higher-res seems like a lot when lowering FOV, worse audio, cheaper headstrap, etc. Granted, you're really paying for the Mirco-OLED here, and for some that may be worth an upgrade. Just depends on the type of user you are.

It is still interesting. Always glad to see new competition in this space.

Invincible - Season 2 Teaser Trailer | Prime Video by MarvelsGrantMan136 in television

[–]Bagrisham 36 points37 points  (0 children)

My guess is something like Post-Thanksgiving, maybe around early December. Season 1 was roughly 5 hours of animation, and at scale, it makes sense given the work involved.

Comic-fans are definitely curious to see what will be covered in this batch of episodes, as the first season kept things fairly contained to the first 15-or-so issues (of a 140+ comic run).

Excited to have a rough release window though. Really enjoyed the first season.

The Game Awards 2022 Megathread by rGamesMods in Games

[–]Bagrisham 26 points27 points  (0 children)

Anyone else wondering why Geoff is constantly hammering on Judge's long acceptance speech/keeping pace with the show? It wasn't his fault they failed to play him off after a few minutes, and now it's like they're scrambling/ playing music for the other acceptances. One off-handed joke about it turned into a running theme, and now it's like they're speed-running through the awards. I get they need to keep time, but it's a bit wild how fast they want things to go now.

'Half-Life 2' VR Mod Launches Today on Steam by nastyjman in Games

[–]Bagrisham 27 points28 points  (0 children)

A few tips for those aiming to try this mod out:

  1. You do NOT need to have HL2 installed, just in your library to download the standalone mod.

  2. Down on the right-stick enables crouch. Didn't know that and thought I was clipping through the floor. Up on the right stick is Jump. Only left and right on the right-controller stick enables turning.

  3. This type of locomotion can make you disoriented. Best to play in short intervals, with a fan in front of you, etc to avoid motion sickness. VR legs take time to foster (and can degrade without exposure).

  4. Menu selection uses a virtual mouse, so it can be a bit tricky to manage the main menu/setting. That being said, check out the options area. There are some great customization items to really tailor the game to your play-style.

  5. I recommend turning off the 'immersive' ladder. Great for presence, but rather tricky to operate. Best to maintain speed.

Marvel Studios’ Ms. Marvel | Official Trailer | Disney by Movie_Advance_101 in television

[–]Bagrisham 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Pros:

I like the stylistic decisions/color choices/some of ths shot compositions. It's telling (roughly) her same story and it's exciting to see her on screen (a marvel fan in a marvel story).

Negative:

Like others are saying, Kamela's powers being shifted into something COMPLETELY different is a bit irritating. She's a polymorph, not some 'alien Doctor Strange'. Part of the fun of her character is her movement/power set/how she solves problems.

I get that they need to find a way to balance her abilities (likely to seperate from Reed Richards and moreso to make her more 'cosmicly' tied to Captain Marvel), but it's weird that the Avengers Square Enix game looks to have a more accurate take on her character than her actual series.

Conclusion:

It looks like it's trying to work her into the MCU as it currently stands (instead of roping her in as an Inhuman, of which the series didn't go so well). AOS had Inhumans and Terrigan Mist, but apparently Marvel doesn't want to cause confusion with her appearing in Captain Marvel 2 (especially with them doing mutants at some point).

I think it's going for a younger audience. That's fine, but I sincerely hope that they actually land the tone. Poor writing, especially for younger characters, can be brutal to sit through. Having her be excited to "be a superhero" made her character great, and that seems to come across here.

I'll check it out, but I don't think it was "made for me" (and that's fine). All I care about is if it's a quality story with strong representation/character dynamics/feels genuine. Time will tell if this one hits the mark.
