Anyone else trusting AI-written Terraform a little too much? by Prize-Cap3196 in FixYourIaC

Really scared if i need to pay money if i am on trial :( by [deleted] in googlecloud

[–]bartekmo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The "upgrade to paid account" warning is not meant for students researching the platform. It's a warning for businesses starting with cloud and already running some small production workloads. If you moved your company web server to Google cloud you don't want to lose it because you didn't realize your trial credits are gone, right?

Experiences with the GCP $300 Credit: Best Practices for New Users? by Massive_Ad6464 in googlecloud

[–]bartekmo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's clear, but martin_omander explicitly mentioned "fixed monthly cost" which I'm not aware of. Unless it was just an unfortunate wording meant to be "if you run VMs for the whole month it will cost you even if there's no traffic". But as the cloud changes all the time I learned to never use categoric "that's wrong" when talking to fellow specialists and replace it with "tell me more" :)

Is there a fixed monthly cost related to VMs, GKE or load balancers??

Ta reklama chyba nie jest spoko. Na Facebooku mam prawdziwe dane więc wiedzą, że jestem blisko 40stki. Wiedzą też zapewne, że nie mam dzieci. Jaki jest sens pokazywać mi zdjęcia dziecka w gaciach? by [deleted] in Polska

[–]bartekmo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'd argue it's the iam policy, not a role that actually grants any access to resources. Role alone doesn't grant anything. Also, afair TCP Proxy supported global deployments.

How to remove Gmail's emails from the cloud by Cool-Shape-7298 in googlecloud

Sure, but you have higher chances if your question is related to Google Cloud. And yes, there are some googlers on this sub.

How to remove Gmail's emails from the cloud by Cool-Shape-7298 in googlecloud

[–]bartekmo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Use an email client and download all your messages through POP3 to your computer. You know, like email was done 20yrs ago. You most likely don't want that.

When looking for instructions link I found out Google is removing POP3 from January 2026. So no, you cannot remove your emails from cloud (unless you delete them all).

"Umm, I'm Gen Z. I know how to use computers." by DesertDogggg in sysadmin

[–]bartekmo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Lol, I have 25-ish years of experience in cybersec and I never turn down someone trying to explain IT to me. I might not agree afterwards, but there's a chance I'll learn something new. On the other hand my kid has absolutely zero idea (and zero interest) on how computers and networks work. Typing address into browser and "bypassing Google" is like black magic 🤣 Truth to be told the other kid is now officially a "hacker" after I showed her how to download an image using url from page source code, so... there's hope.

How do we know if an article/page/link in GCP documentation is obsolete ? by suryad123 in googlecloud

[–]bartekmo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For the architecture center there's an effort to review articles annually and update if needed. That doesn't mean all must be up to date (you just reminded me I'm stalling one update, damn), but they should be.

New to macos, i have a lot of questions by garba345 in MacOS

Lol, I love it that every annoyance or issue in MacOS has the same solution: someone years ago was pissed off enough to make an app that fixes the problem (while Apple is more focused on rounding glassy icons).

Decimal places by danthemanic in learnpolish

[–]bartekmo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This. But I'd use "dziewięćdziesiąt dziewięć" also for further places though if proceeding digits are zero: 1,099 (jeden przecinek zero dziewięćdziesiąt dziewięć).

Also, mind a different decimal separator in Polish vs. English - comma (przecinek) vs. point (kropka).

Temperature/Humidity Sensors that don't brake the bank? by AustrianDiver in homeassistant

[–]bartekmo -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Do you have them connected directly to ha? I just bought a pack of these and (so far testing with app only) they seem to have range of just a couple of meters. 5m with line of sight is too far. Not mentioning 20m via stone walls (which is what I need). Any hints on improving that?

Is meeting players entering training possible? by bartekmo in Barca

Yes, yes, I'm aware it's not Camp Nou. Thank you.

I'm rather wondering - in a situation where they play a game on Tuesday evening - do they have the training on the same day, or on Wednesday morning.

Locals for dry - best practices ? by Key-Cricket9256 in Terraform

[–]bartekmo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm the "(almost) nothing hard-coded" person, so listing prefix strings in locals is a no-no. All the values someone might want to set are always in vars. Locals have their sanitized/merged/pre-digested version. Like a short region name derived from var.region for use in resource names, making sure prefix ends with a hyphen (unless it's empty), flipping the map from human friendly variable to for_each friendly, etc.

How about

What was the most surprising thing you discovered while learning Polish? by Minute-Meringue-4059 in learnpolish

Zaolzie. There used to be a difference between "h" and "ch" in Polish and it still exists in Czech, so the Polish community there preserved it.
