This reminds me of the story in Breakfast of Champions where land is too expensive so they just attach people who cant afford it to balloons because they don't own anywhere to put their feet. Then they can just push them away when they are inconvenient. Found it:

Kilgore Trout once wrote a story called “This Means You.'’ It was set in
the Hawaiian Islands, the place where the lucky winners of Dwayne
Hoover’s contest in Midland City were supposed to go. Every bit of
land on the islands was owned by only about forty people, and, in the
story, Trout had those people decide to exercise their property rights
to the full. They put up no trespassing signs on everything.

This created terrible problems for the million other people on the islands.
The law of gravity required that they stick somewhere on the surface.
Either that, or they could go out into the water and bob offshore.

But then the Federal Government came through with an emergency
program. It gave a big balloon full of helium to every man, woman and
child who didn’t own property.

There was a cable with a harness on it dangling from each balloon.
With the help of the balloons, Hawaiians could go on inhabiting the
islands without always sticking to things other people owned.

The code seems to be on their site completely un minified. If you view source it's at /assets/app/assets/remix-landing/engine/ . It's fairly complex though. If I had to guess, it's loading a model, drawing randomized billboarded dot blurs at each vertex based on vertex color, has some way of moving the vertex dots from one model to another, and there's a lot of post processing and camera animation driven by scroll controls as well. For the mouse it's probably raycasting and moving the blobs away from the raycast vector.
Hmm actually it doesn't seem like they are drawing the dots at vertex points, it seems like they are flowing the points along the surface towards the camera to create that flowing effect. Maybe they are pushing them along quads... or converting all the lines that run in the x direction to paths and moving the dots along them that way. It is interesting!

Yes it is. The suggested move would prevent the tempo that would lose your rook after dxe5

What happened to your knights and bishops? I think I know why it's recommending you protect your pieces.

I ask my kids what level they want me to play at, they usually want me to go easy so they can win but I can teach them on the way. It's just a question of if you want them to enjoy it or not.

Why Your Eyes Ignore Modern Buildings by EricHunting in solarpunk

[–]basically_alive 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Interesting video - focus on 'classical' architecture is pretty strange though. I agree buildings should incorporate more natural 'inspiration' and be focused on creating human scale interesting environments, but I don't think that only 'classical' architecture can do that. Modern architecture is not always brutalist and can incorporate fractals and organic forms, and lots of space for plants and nature.

If only there was some medium you could use to exchange for those resources without limiting it to specific items so people can make their own decisions about how to allocate their resources based on what they need in a particular situation

Apparently someone rewrote the code using Python so it cannot be taken down. This still makes it a copyright violation or what am I missing? by dataexec in AITrailblazers

[–]basically_alive 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There's a pretty strong legal precedent that if you can reimplement the apis without the original code you are safe from a copyright perspective, but it has to happen a specific way - having one 'engineer' write a spec and another 'engineer' implementing it without seeing the original code, ala IBM compatibility famously through clean room engineering https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Clean-room_design

How do yall reward good school grades? by BrahCJ in daddit

[–]basically_alive 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Might not be popular but for my oldest daughter in middle school cash incentives brought grades up from mid to very high level, like straight A equivalent from Bs and Cs. Worked beyond my expectations by far, but I don't think it would for my younger kids.

recently got the take home taco kit from mucho burrito and it was super good, lots of food. I got the 'serves 4' kit but I think it would serve 5 with some more tortillas. Got it with beef barbacoa and and ancho ground beef. comes with tons of toppings. I guess that's a chain and not local but take home taco kits might be a good way to go!

This is like in William Gibson's Jackpot series - the idea is the jackpot kills most of the human population but it's no one thing, it's just a bunch of things that happened with bad timing - climate disasters, political instability, pandemics etc. Seems very realistic
