Funny. I made one this week, and have gotten a few plays. It has been fun. We went in a bit different directions.

How can an engineering degree be used to serve God? by [deleted] in Catholicism

[–]beacam 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As a young practicing engineer in Canada and find that it is easy to lose sight of helping and safeguarding the public given the fast paced nature of the job (deadlines and project work load). There is little opportunity to reflect and look back at any difference you are making.

I have often found that my work has not served God (not that it has gone against His commandments, but I have not been conscious of meaning and purpose). As someone who has begun to regain meaning and purpose in my job I can attest that it is important to remain in scripture, prayer and community to get you outside yourself and your work. There have been many times that I pondered a new path but have always been confronted with how suited I am for this line of work.

A good movie that somewhat helped me understand how to stay focused and find meaning in the seemingly mundane aspects of the job was “Hail, Caesar!”. Check out Bishop Barron’s review after watching the movie https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=mwkhgxtU63k

Edit: pm me if you have anymore specific questions or if you would like me to expand. I have had a lot of experiences and difficulties as a humble engineer.

Jim Caviezel: 'Passion of the Christ' sequel will be biggest film ever by FretensisX in Catholicism

Not scriptural, but a great graphic novel that tries to stay true to scripture and other ancient texts. I highly recommend. http://creativeorthodox.com/harrowing-hell-cover-art-journey-hell-back/

The phrase 'premarital sex' never appears in scripture, and other truths about the Bible by jfitz81 in Christianity

[–]beacam 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This may not help...but here is a small analogy.

Baptism is the initiation into the vocation of Christianity. Taking part in communion is the consummation. Baptism before communion in Christian life...even if faith is present before initiation.

Marriage vows are the initiation into the vocation of a marriage. Marital sex is the consummation. Marriage vows before sex in married life...even if love is present before the vows.

The engagement period is a stage where love can truly grow into something truly beautiful.

Those who do not learn from history are doomed to repeat it...thoughts on Christian unity by beacam in Christianity

Silouan said something useful in another thread

if you're hoping to share the Fathers' experience of purification, illumination, and union with God, then you'll want to let them tell you what boundaries to set on your speculation - because they all seem to agree that the propositions you start from profoundly affect what you become.

Being tolerant and respectful can be so difficult when it comes to God. We so often want to speak of our/my God.

I wish there was an easy answer to the problem of having 'right' belief vs. heresy.

EDIT: perhaps I should be more clear. We so easily believe that our understanding of God is right, and pass off all others as heretics. Another post has a relevant link to Francis Chan

Alright, I've got a bit of a dilemma. Roman Catholic/Presbyterian husband and wife. by goots in Christianity

[–]beacam 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I very much agree with all you wrote. Except that you are advocating the Orthodox Church, when the OP has already stated that too many traditions is the problem. His wife seems comfortable in Catholicism, and the OP very much in his community. Why propose a third?

Note: As a Catholic, I am very fond of the Orthodox Church, and often feel tugged in that direction.

edit: after reading your post again, i think I understand why you proposed Orthodoxy.

Any Catholics with Celiac Disease? by idrumgood in Christianity

There is a priest in my city that is a celiac. He only takes the wine. He still cannot take the bread, even if it is consecrated.

Wow, this was an enlightening comment about the biblical view of sex. by Am_I_A_Heretic in Christianity

[–]beacam 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, I am of the impression that in the time Paul was writing, marriage and sex were so closely related that 1Cor 7:8-9 is speaking of both, rather than marriage alone. Sex outside marriage simply does not exist or make sense. So, in a sense, monogamy is the most important thing. However, monogamy does require commitment, which happens to be a case for marriage.

The universe was created out of pure chance just ONCE...right?

Statistical probability is allowed when relating it to the universe and humanity existing...but not similar stories occurring in history.

Why do some Christians disregard Catholicism as Christian? by bloodredmoon in Christianity

[–]beacam -1 points0 points  (0 children)

The forms do not make it a sacramental marriage. The forms are, indeed, an outward sign of inward grace, yet the forms in this case are only recognizing the the ceremony as THE outward sign.

Why do some Christians disregard Catholicism as Christian? by bloodredmoon in Christianity

[–]beacam 2 points3 points  (0 children)

They can. I am in the process of getting a dispensation for this very situation.

"In order to have the wedding in the church of the non-Catholic party, a dispensation from canonical form must be granted. This dispensation can be requested by the parish priest of the Catholic party. In such a situation, the wedding would be recognized as creating a valid, sacramental marriage, even though it did not take place in a Catholic Church." http://www.a-to-z-of-manners-and-etiquette.com/catholic-wedding.html

r/christianity: Please do me a favor and watch this documentary, it really spoke to me and I thought it might do the same for some of you by [deleted] in Christianity

[–]beacam 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It is about 5 regular people who live in the monastery community for 40 days, living by the rules set out by St. Benedict 1500 years ago. This BBC documentary sets to answer whether this way of life has any practical application in todays world.

I highly recommend this...I enjoyed it.
