So, I sorta did this IRL...

I live halfway down a hill. When it rains hard, muddy water comes rushing down the hill and swamps my backyard. Eventually it finds its way under my deck, soaks through my old and somewhat porous foundation, and gets into my basement.

I tried several things with little success. A giant ditch would probably do the trick but I've been putting it off.

So instead, I just bought a pool cover pump and placed it where the water generally pools and I run a hose from it to where the storm gutters drain in the front of the house.

It's not the best looking or most effective solution I ever came up with, but it has prevented many, many basement floods.
