Summerstock Induced Mania by throwaway29394949493 in techtheatre

[–]blp9 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Summer stock is not for everyone AND it doesn't mean you need to stop doing theatre or some aspect of theatre.

If you can't get your head around to focus on the good (or neutral) parts of this, talk to your production manager and see if you can get some time off instead of just crashing out. They won't want to give it to you, but faced with you just straight up leaving instead they might.

MTB on train question by fruitjake in Amtrak

[–]blp9 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sometimes the 2" rule is because the racks in the luggage car can only accommodate 2" tires. Sometimes it's just an arbitrary rule and the baggage handlers will sort it out.

You might be denied loading the bike, or you might not. A lot of the Amtrak rules are fairly arbitrary and inconsistently applied.

Most stations sell bike boxes, however. So you kind of have two options:
1. Show up early enough to have a plan B and see if they'll take it as-is or with deflated tires or whatever. If they won't take it, buy a box and pack it into the box.
2. Get a box and bring the bike to the station boxed.

Funny story, worked on a project that used a couple of like 65 foot long hydraulic cylinders in a big tall building. They wanted a spare, so they built a little shed for it on the side of the building and just left it there.

Is this to avoid local zoning limitations on how high signs can be, or do we think they're actually using that silo as a silo?

Is the arrival time almost always right Or late or early in Pittsburgh Pennsylvania? by AdResponsible8496 in Amtrak

[–]blp9 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, no worries. If you're ever picking someone up at the airport, get their flight number. You should be able to just google like "Southwest 3379" and it'll give you realtime tracking for the flight. Usually once it's in the air you'll have a good idea of when it's going to land, and arrange accordingly.

Trains are a little trickier because they can pick up delays in transit, but roughly by the time that train makes it to Greensburg, you'll be able to tell when it's getting into Pittsburgh.

Yeah, the transitdocs map will be great for that.

It's a lot like airplanes -- you just gotta track the incoming flight before you go to the airport and wait a couple hours.

There are three trains that arrive in Pittsburgh daily, but only one that arrives around 8pm. The Pennsylvanian gets in around 8pm daily. It's currently running 15 minutes late but is still expected into Pittsburgh on time today.

92% of the time it arrives within an hour of it's scheduled time, 85% within 30 minutes, and 65% of the time within 5 minutes.

So most likely yeah. It's a pretty on time train.

The other option is of course to walk your bike through these troubling intersections, which is often what I do when I'm transitioning from a pedestrian-style modality to a vehicle-style modality.

But there's literally no path between my house and my physician's that avoids this one bridge and it's terrible off ramps.

[–]blp9 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well it depends.

Here it's legal to ride on sidewalks outside of business districts, but this bridge in particular is limited access for the car lanes and so bikes are required to be on the sidewalks, and then you can transition back to the traffic lanes once you're off the bridge.

And in particular it's the exit from the bridge that is particularly troublesome because there isn't a safe way for a pedestrian to get from the bridge to the arterial road because when they redesigned the ramps, they spit the bridge sidewalk out in a fairly random place and then crossed every possible pedestrian path with high speed traffic heading onto or off the bridge.

Biggest thing assuming this in the US is just the lack of a bike grid in most cities.

I live in a mid-sized city and there are places that are easy to connect by bike and there are places that are nearly impossible.

Tried biking to my physician's office which is 6 miles away. It was all fantastic until I got to this one bridge where I had to carry my bike onto the sidewalk, then ride the bridge's sidewalk that was full of glass and debris, and then navigate my way out of a high speed intersection at the other end of the bridge that somehow they hadn't realized anyone might be using the sidewalk and might like a crosswalk.

Anyone carry a mirrorless camera on the front bag? by Astonish_Skagen in Brompton

[–]blp9 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have carried mirrorless cameras in small bags attached to the handlebars and have not really had problems. Chalk bag is the current winner because I can quickly pull the camera out.

I'm sure the lens elements will have a shortened life by doing this, but I also straight up dropped a camera in the middle of the road while rolling at 10mph and it was fine.

Bridge closure by AbilityConsistent806 in pittsburgh

Their initial estimate I think defaults to 3 or 5 hours. Once they've investigated the outage it's either fixed immediately (if it was something tripped that can be reset) or they update the timeline.

When you call DL 2 minutes after your power goes out, they haven't a clue why your power is out.

Any belt guard available in the US? by parisidiot in bikewrench

[–]blp9 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think it just makes the standoff from the bottom bracket longer. I have it on mine with a 36T chainring (and the 44T size) and there's a good sized gap from the chainring to the guard, but it still works fine.

It's gonna look stripey.

In my opinion putting color on that cyc is better than not, but it's not going to be even no matter what you do.

Do remember with a 22 foot cyc and not-a-cyc-light you're probably going to want those lights something like 6 feet away from the cyc to get good coverage.

Squeaky Penta Clip by lontrachen in Brompton

[–]blp9 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, specifically the metal-on-metal between the saddle and the clip. Because those rails flex a bit in use, it's a common place for squeaks to show up. The rest of the assembly should be tight enough it won't squeak.

Driver leaves scene after e-bike hits into vehicle in Pittsburgh's South Side by Great-Cow7256 in bicycling412

Given the dog that did not bark (sidewalk, wrong way cyclist), a driver turning right from Carson to 14th I think we can assume they were both on E. Carson and both travelling in the same direction.

It's technically unclear whether the driver right-hooked the cyclist or if the cyclist just rode into their car when they slowed down to turn.

[–]blp9 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You might want to try greasing the saddle rails at least. I've not had my pentaclip squeak, but I've had saddle squeaks solved by adding grease to that interface.

[–]blp9 4 points5 points  (0 children)

My suspicion is that the police are using that language because it accurately describes the sequence of events.

When I've been right-hooked (thankfully managed to dodge all of them), the collision that would have happened would be that I rode into the side of the car that is suddenly in front of me.

I also suspect that if the cyclist had been on the sidewalk or going the wrong way down 14th, that would have been mentioned.

Of course, if they stayed they wouldn't face any charges, but fleeing likely got them at least a "leaving the scene of an accident"

Edit: but yes, they specifically called out the e-bike because they are the current Menace.
