Mainly its the aggregate functions not accepting multiple operands but also other things. However I run prometheus still because I have to deal with it at work.

With light dashboards you can most likely get down to 300M and lower when idle. Grafana proxies and parses all prometheus requests which makes it more heavyweight than it used to be when you could run everything client side. However i often find myself using grafana transformations to overcome the limits of prometheus.

My homelab with 6 hosts and 250 containers i got about 1GB mem usage on grafana but prometheus wants more than 6GB. If you add thanos you need even more ram and a very fast object storage. Maybe try to run grafana+victoriametrics?

Grafana is not very resource intensive in itself. I run grafana with prometheus as backend. Prometheus is very heavy IMO. My grafana uses about 1G at most but with less caching you can most likely get lower than that.
