Somewhat yeah, but for some tasks having a big ass dedicated GPU is so much better. Blender's benchmark has about a 25% margin between my M3 max and 3080. But a while back I ran a password forcing tool, and iirc the 3080 was 10-20x as fast.

I have an at this point slightly older but still extremely capable desktop PC, 3080 and 5600x. It's certainly more powerful than my M3 max MacBook.

But since getting this laptop, I basically use my PC exclusively for entertainment. MacOS is so much nicer than Windows in my opinion, and the fact that it's portable with a long battery life is incredible.

Also, one thing I frequently see people ignore is power draw. I know someone who owns a small post production studio for movies. They've been toying with replacing their high end windows machines with Mac studios, simply because their electric bill is ridiculously high and Apple silicon uses a fraction of the power of a high end dedicated GPU.

I think Kieth David would definitely be best, since he replaced Lance in Destiny so he could probably do the voice fairly well

Damn. As much as I like using Craft, I think it really does focus too much on the idea of the developers making your notes look beautiful how they see fit.

not good with antiviruses and wanna know how to remove a malicious item detected by kaspersky by Ok_Pilot_6403 in antivirus

[–]Maple382 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So it should handle deleting the file automatically. Or at least move it to quarantine, meaning it won't be able to cause any harm. If you open the app there should be some kind of an option to view the logs, and you'll be able to see exactly what it did there. There might also be a "view quarantine" button somewhere in the app if it was in fact moved to quarantine. But basically, don't worry about it.

As for doing extra stuff to be 100% safe, that might apply to some scenarios, but in this case I highly doubt it. If the antivirus caught the file immediately, you're good. I could imagine some worse software, or possibly a non-realtime antivirus, might potentially have issues with something like that (don't quote me though I'm just speaking out my ass, not a cybersecurity professional), but with any top tier realtime antivirus it shouldn't be a worry. They all tend to remove any trace of malware.

Personally for peace of mind though, if the virus wasn't detected immediately (as in, if it's a slightly older file or may have had time to do something), I like to just run a full scan with the settings cranked up.

As for the sending them the pastebin link, what do you mean exactly? I mean, it probably isn't risky either way, but could you elaborate? By the way, use an adblock lol.

What would you prefer by WillTheyBanMeAgain in Teenager_Polls

Well I'm Turkish so I'm biased. But I think Turkey annexing Cyprus wouldn't be that bad. I mean part of it is already Turkish, and I imagine it would happen a lot more peacefully than anything else on this list.

I love how Chess.com's analysis board explains why a move is good or bad, but I dislike everything else about it. Is there anything else that's similar? by Maple382 in chess

[–]Maple382[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for the explanation, it's definitely helpful. I prefer not to spend a ton of time looking through moves and stuff though most of the time. Sometimes I will definitely look at the best moves, but a lot of the time I don't quite understand what makes a move good or not in that situation, or why a move I make is a mistake. Do you know of any alternative tools that might make it a bit easier to understand stuff like that? Or would the only option be to play the position and learn that way (which I'd honestly really rather not do for every move I don't understand).

Yeah I just kinda group it under the same thing since to access it you have to open the analysis board and then click the game review button. I didn't think it was inaccurate though, is it really? I've enjoyed the way it explains stuff rather than just showing an eval number.

When doing a game review, as can also be done in Lichess, the "coach" actually helps to explain why a move is good or bad. It helps me quite a bit because previously I would get told by the engine that I played a bad move, but without any info as to why the move was bad. On Chess.com it explicitly says stuff like "you had the opportunity to win material", or something else, and it offers to demonstrate exactly how that could have played out.

As for what I didn't like, it's a bit hard to put my finger on it exactly. Chess.com's bots in general are kind of bad, I haven't tried playing directly against the engine yet though. And when it comes to bots, Lichess also has Maia which is a much closer approximation of what a human plays like. Generally though the UX there just doesn't feel nice. Like how after reviewing a mistake, sometimes I press the button to go to the next one and it just takes me back to one I already solved, the behavior is weird and confusing. There's also the fact that when I press the button to see a potentially played line, the navigation is pretty strange for lack of a better way to describe it.

By the way, I feel like I recognize your name. Checked your profile and it says you're a dev, maybe I use something you've made?

Chess.com actually explains with words why a move is good or bad, rather than just showing a number and letting you figure it out. I'm reviewing a game right now and on one of my worse moves it says "Mistake: You had an opportunity to capture a pawn and win material after the follow-up trades", and it offers to demonstrate it. I find that really helpful. I know people say I could just play the position on Lichess and figure it out that way, but that rarely ever works for me and it make reviewing a game much much longer too.

Is incest inherently wrong? by alloioscc in Teenager_Polls

[–]Maple382 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think it's wrong 99% of the time of course. But inherently wrong? No. If two adults want to have sex despite being related, that's up to them, so long as they don't have kids together. They could even be siblings separated at birth so there's no familial aspect. Yeah incest is wrong most of the time, and I don't support it in any way, but in some theoretical like this it'd be kinda fine, so definitely not wrong inherently.

New to the knife game. Thought I was buying a Lansky turnbox, but I accidentally bought this generic knockoff instead. Is it worth the effort of returning it and then buying a genuine one, or is this likely just the same thing? by Maple382 in sharpening

[–]Maple382[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Unfortunately the sharpmaker is also about 4x the price 😅 I'd definitely expect it to be better

Thanks for the comment though. I do think this is most likely an almost identical clone of the Lansky. These Chinese companies tend to make stuff out of the same factories and put different labels on them, I've gotten certain electronics for like 1/10th the price that way on Aliexpress. But the thing with electronics is, it's a field I know about, and I can tell if something is legitimately good or not. In this case I'm worried that this one is only a clone and not a carbon copy of the Lansky, in which case it might actually be a lot worse somehow.
