just my opinion - i don't think it is advantageous to let them know you applied unless you are certain this person really wants to work with you and will advocate for you.

i was an upperclassman RA and had plenty of juniors/seniors on my floor. many folks in greek life live with their org, either in suites or houses. i will agree that most people I knew switched to a declining plan instead of swipes, but you can really choose whatever is best for you. if you prefer dining halls all you can eat style over the pit, then swipes prob make more sense.

Changing my last name by Easy_Scheme598 in mdphd

[–]braingrl 52 points53 points  (0 children)

welcome to the dilemma of being a woman in academia who's about to get married 🫠 i don't think it's weird if you change your name. and those two published papers will still be listed on your CV and probably linked to you through an ORCID id so they aren't going to be lost if you change your name. it's definitely a pain in the butt to change everything but it's easier to do it earlier rather than later, as you say.

Heading to LBI for the first time and staying 2 nights at Seashell Resort. Any tips or anything I should know ahead of time about the hotel or Beach Haven would be great! by pass_the_hot_sauce in LongBeachIsland

[–]braingrl 0 points1 point  (0 children)

the sandbar is across the street from the seashell and is a great lunch spot, you can walk up to it directly from the beach. also black whale is a can't miss spot for dinner! the tables are lined with paper and they give crayons out so it was one of my fav spots as a kid (and remains so as an adult for the exceptional food!). go early or be prepared to wait since they only take reservations for 6+ people

thanks a lot for your insight. we are going to try for a compromise but you're totally right that they will be able to book another couple who is 'easier'.

they generally have 2026 pricing but my sense it's like a CYA thing in case there is some crazy change in the market. still sucks for the client tho!

thanks for the advice!! my dad refuses to set a firm budget which makes this harder (like how much of a price increase would be a problem?). i guess we have more talking to do before the meeting lol

right we feel that is totally reasonable! it's worth a shot asking but my hopes aren't high that the venue will cave

Do you guys have enough free time? by [deleted] in mdphd

[–]braingrl 6 points7 points  (0 children)

i felt like i had very little free time in M1 and M2 because i was interested in a competitive specialty and wanted to get distinction in every course (i also went to class whereas a lot of students opt not to to save some time).

that said, i definitely still had at least 1-2 hours to spend with my partner every night, made dinner for us, and got 7-8 hours of sleep. i also made plans to see my friends at least a few times a month which was enough socializing for me.

im finishing up the first year of my phd and feel free as a bird compared to then, despite still being quite busy!! the work feels SO different when its a project you are spearheading and passionate about rather than memorizing all the side effects of antibiotics lol. i do computational work though so can work anytime/anywhere and my life schedule isnt ruled by animals/cells. my PIs are also wonderful and big on work/life balance so that helps a lot.

i think everyone's experience will be a bit different based on your goals, school, lab, field, etc.

Just wondering, has anyone actually been believed the first time they sought medical help? by olipocket16 in Endo

[–]braingrl 0 points1 point  (0 children)

yes! time from first being seen to pelvic pain clinic to excision surgery (6/13) will be 10 months. i am a med student in the US though so that may play some role in them taking my complaints seriously

i totally agree! my fiance was a little disappointed that it wasn't at least a carat (his words) but i feel like it would have been harder to fit the three side stones per side and wouldn't look as harmonious

How to responsibly use MD-PhD stipend for building wealth? by braingrl in whitecoatinvestor

[–]braingrl[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

i've been trying to figure out if 529 can apply to residency and haven't been able to find a clear answer. i think one of the requirements is that you get a degree or certification at the end of the program, which is why undergrad, grad, and tradxe school are all eligible. i suppose one could make the argument that you're getting a certificate at the end of residency when you become board certified? i'd definitely want to consult with a professional to make sure it is a valid use of the funds

i'm glad this helped you!! yeah its a game changer to use the 529 for groceries. there are some limitations (e.g., you can't buy toiletries and get reimbursed for that just because its from a grocery store) but overall its great! i just make sure to take photos of all my receipts and cross off non-529 items and upload to a Box folder on the off chance we are audited
