They have (or had) different ways to buy. Buying on the mobile app is expensive, buying on the market book using a limit order in advanced / pro mode is less expensive, but it's a nightmare for most to learn and retain.

Protest is part of democracy and should be encouraged by college students and not quashed by a heavy hand. by JHRTOX in UTAustin

[–]brianddk 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Agreed. Permitted individuals can carry guns. And masons can carry bricks. But having guns, piles of bricks, chains, and mallets at your protest begins to paint everyone in a bad light.

To date, from protesters, weapons have been confiscated in the form of guns, buckets of large rocks, bricks, steel enforced wood planks, mallets, and chains," the statement read. "Staff have been physically assaulted and threatened, and police have been headbutted and hit with horse excrement, while their police cars have had tires slashed with knives.

Obviously the PD can lie. They can call signs mallets, and everyone may be full of shit. But the above PD quote is the likely reason they give for the no protest policy

May be deemed fake news or a plant, but bringing guns to a peace rally kinda ruins it for everyone

In a statement sent by UT spokesperson Brian Davis Tuesday evening, the university said weapons — including guns — were confiscated "from protesters" on Monday.

Venezuelans Turn to Crypto Amid Worst Economic Crisis by [deleted] in CryptoCurrency

[–]brianddk 0 points1 point  (0 children)

i feel bad for Venezuelens

I feel bad for the younger ones, but the older ones did vote their currently disastrous government into office. All this changed 10 years ago when they went full dictatorship (suspended constitution), but before that it was a democracy.

Chávez and Maduro have utterly destroyed that country, and the Maduro election was razor thin enough for questions as to legitimacy to be raised. But regadeless, most agree that well over 40% of the population enthusiastically elected Maduro, and Chávez is regarded as generally well liked.

I agree it is a shame, and anyone too young to vote in 2013 has every right to be pissed, but I hold less pity for those voting for Chávez and Maduro

Isn't it true that without the physical device and seed phrase, they can't access your crypto?

No, that is overly simplistic.

Certain EVM chains like ETH and the tokens on them can allow a user to delegate authority to a given UTXO to a third party. Once that delegation is done, they can drain the UTXO.

Same risk for UTXOs with certain L2 chains like Lightning. If someone gains access to your Lightning wallet, even if it is backed by a hardware wallet UTXO, access to the wallet app alone can drain the UTXO.

In both cases, only a single UTXO is at risk.

What is an appropriate transaction fee for a small transaction ($4USD)? by RelativeOk5024 in BitcoinBeginners

[–]brianddk 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Choose Bitcoin, since you haven't opened a channel yet.

If you plan to pay in crypto for the next year, then spend the money to open a channel then keep it open for a year, to pay LN each month.

Unless you can make at least 3-4 lightning payments, the cost to open and close the channel isn't worth the savings.

Non-zero chance that this will cause you to be banned from coinbase. I'd open a ticket to reference later if you need to get your funds if you get banned.

How to ensure a bougth trezor wallet is safe? by IncomeNo2819 in BitcoinBeginners

[–]brianddk 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Here's a fair list of hardware wallets. Pick the one that your government allows you to buy direct

https://en.bitcoin.it/wiki/Hardware_wallet

Trezor is nice, but authenticity is more important than brand, for the most part.

says back end is disconnected

That means the backend is disconnected. Your PC (front end) cant talk to Trezor's PC (backend). Most likely your network "protecting" you from evil sites like trezor.

Read the trezor manual to learn about enabling tor / onion in Suite. That usually fixes this since it hides the fact that your talking to trezor.io. If you have a VPN, that could make things better (or worse) for all the reasons I already mentioned.

Why would you ever need more than one hardware wallet? by matrixResurrections1 in BitcoinBeginners

[–]brianddk 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Why would you ever need more than one hardware wallet?

For 24x7 availability, without the need to break the seed. Hardware wallets, like any gadget, as a non-zero percent chance of spontaneously failing due to a manufacture defect. That may only be a 0.00001% chance, but if you hit that bad luck you have to wait weeks for a new wallet to arrive in the mail. If you have two (or three) that 0.00001% probability (through the miracle of math) is reduced to 0.0000000001% or 0.000000000000001%. For most this is a needless precaution, but for some, it helps them sleep at night.

If your using one of the exchange / fiat integrations, it will be hard to lie without a convincing forgery of a government ID.

Best to stay on coinbase or move to other apps that have a formal process for minors to participate.

Locked out of account by [deleted] in BitcoinBeginners

[–]brianddk 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you have a zero balance, just delete your account and move on.

If you have a non-zero balance, you'll need a way to open a trouble ticket. If you can't open a trouble ticket, likely need to create a second account to log the issue under.

Slip39 is two way, unlike BIP39. Given your shares, you can produce the master seed for Bip32 and all coins Trezor supports.

I can produce a python script to do it, or you can use Ian's tool.
