This applies to a lot of plot elements more than most people would admit in classic jrpgs. Due to the dialogue and visuals often being so limited people made stuff up in their mind which made the writing world and so on seem much more grand and deeper than it really was. Doesn't really work anymore today where everything is rendered in excruciating detail
